How do we know about things that happened thousands of years ago, when there were no videos or photos? One answer is written records. The earliest written records of Chinese culture and history are known as oracle bone inscriptions (甲骨文).
More than 3,000 years ago, people in the Shang Dynasty(c. 16th—11th century BC)liked to ask fortune tellers (占卜师 ) about the future. For example, what will the weather be like next week? Where should I go to make money? Will my wife give birth to a boy or a girl? From work to love, people asked questions about many topics. The fortune teller would write the question on an oracle bone, heat it up, and then read the cracks (裂纹) in it to find an answer. That’s how oracle bone inscriptions started.
Tens of thousands of oracle bones have been found so far. They can tell us a great deal about how people lived during the Shang Dynasty. “They help us understand the origins of Chinese philosophy and thought, and find out where our culture comes from,” Song Zhenhao, a leading oracle bone expert, told China Daily.
In addition to telling us about ancient Chinese culture, the oracle bones are also key to understanding the growth and development of the written form of the Chinese language. Many of the characters we use today are similar to those used 3,000 years ago. “The oracle bone inscriptions, as the earliest-known mature (成熟的)form of Chinese characters, show the beauty of a language that has been passed down years after years,” said Chen Nan, a professor at Tsinghua University.
In 2017 UNESCO added oracle bone inscriptions to its Memory of the World Register. They are indeed a valuable memory of ancient China.
19. According to Paragraph 1, one way to study ancient China is through _________.
A. videos B. photos C. characters D. experts
20. What does the underlined word “origins” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. births B. interests C. results D. goals
21. What can we learn from the oracle bones?
a. culture of the ancient Chinese b. future life told by fortune tellers
c. beauty of the Chinese language d. changes of the Chinese language
A. abc B. abd C. acd D. bcd
22. From the passage, we learn that oracle bone inscriptions _________.
A. are difficult to find at the moment B. cost experts a lot of money to study
C. first came out during the Shang Dynasty D. are totally different from the characters today

As the days are getting colder, you might wish you could magically turn into a bear and spend the winter sleeping. In fact, scientists are looking for ways to let humans hibernate, too!
During hibernation, an animal’s heart rate and breathing slow down. They can save energy when there is little food in the winter months.
Japanese researchers have found the secret behind hibernation—the “Q neurons”. These neurons in animals’ brains can put them into a hibernation state. The researchers also did operations on mice after turning on the mice’s “Q neurons”. It turned out that during hibernation, the operations do less harm to the mice.
According to the team, humans’ “O neurons”cannot be turned on and off as easily as the mice’s. But they are confident in copying the mice’s hibernation in humans. That means we could let people “hibernate”when having operations, causing less damage to their bodies.
In recent years, more scientists are getting to realize the benefits of hibernation. US scientist Katherine Grabek found that when the thirteen-lined ground squirrel hibernates, it cleans out harmful brain plaques that are related to Alzheimer’s in humans. They hope to design some medicine for humans based on this finding. Besides, some studies in bats show that, during hibernation, their bodies age more slowly. This also provides new ideas for making humans live longer in the future, according to New Scientist magazine.
At the same time, scientists have found a lot of fun facts on animals. For example, a bat’s heart rate drops to 25 beats per minute during hibernation—down from 400 when it’s awake. Its breathing slows so much that it might not take a breath for up to an hour! Also, a black bear can go without eating, drinking or going to the bathroom for 100 days. During hibernation, their wounds even heal perfectly.
23. Paragraph 2 introduces _________.
A. what is needed for hibernation B. where animals usually hibernate
C. what kind of animals hibernate D. what happens during hibernation
24. What have Japanese researchers found?
A. Humans don’t have “Q neurons” as mice do.
B. It’s difficult to turn on the mice’s “Q neurons”.
C. It’s impossible for humans to copy the hibernation.
D. Doing operations in the hibernation state is less harmful.
25. What will happen in the future based on the scientists’ findings?
A. People can hibernate whenever they like.
B. People may hibernate to slow down aging.
C. People may use animals to create new medicine.
D. People can go without eating or drinking for 100 days.
26. The passage is written to _________.
A. share some findings on hibernation B. introduce fun facts on hibernation
C. show the achievements in operations D. present a new way of doing operations

Johnny Town-mouse was born in a cupboard while Timmy Willie was born in a garden in the country. One day, Timmy Willie went to town by mistake in a big basket with vegetables. There he met Johnny Town-mouse.
Johnny Town-Mouse offered Timmy Willie a most comfortable sofa pillow to sleep. The sofa pillow had a hole in it. Johnny Town-Mouse quite honestly called it the best bed. Excellent meals were also provided.
Although Timmy Willie knew Johnny Town-Mouse and his other new friends here had tried their best to entertain him, he still wanted to be at his peaceful home. The food here disagreed with him and the noise prevented him from sleeping. So he said goodbye to them and hid in a big basket with a small piece of cake and a vegetable leaf.
After a long journey, he was set down safely in his own garden.
Sometimes on Saturdays he went to look at the big basket lying by the gate, but he knew he had better not get in again. And nobody got out, though Johnny Town-Mouse had promised him a visit.

Timmy Willie received him with open arms. “You have come at the best time of the year. We will have sweet pudding and sit in the sun.”
“Hmm, it is a little wet,” sighed Johnny Town-Mouse who loved cleanness. He was carrying his tail under his arm, out of the mud.
“What is that fearful noise?” he shouted loudly.
“That?” said Timmy Willie. “That is only a cow. I will beg a little milk. The cows are quite harmless unless they happen to lie down upon you. How is everything going?”
_________. The family had gone to the seaside to celebrate Easter. The cook was doing spring cleaning in order to clear out the mice. There were four baby cats, and the cat had killed the pet bird. Therefore, he had to stay somewhere else for the moment.
“They say we did it, but I know better,” said Johnny Town-Mouse. “What is that frightening noise?”
“That is only the lawnmower.” I will go and bring back some of the grass clippings right now to make your bed. I am sure you had better settle in the country, Johnny. I am sure you will never want to live in town again.” said Timmy Willie.
But Johnny Town-Mouse did. He went back in the very next basket of vegetables.
