The cost of living in countries like the U.S., Britain, Australia or France has skyrocketed in recent years. However, if you're willing to leave your country and explore life in other areas, there are many countries boasting an extremely cheap and low cost of living. Check out the following countries when planning your next move.
Ecuador
Ecuador is similar to the United States in many ways, and as a result has become a popular American getaway. They even use the U.S. Dollar for their currency. In this country, it's cheaper to eat out every day than cook for yourself on a budget in the U.S. You can even buy a property for around $50,000 and hire someone to tend to it while you're away.
Mexico
Although the country is known for its poverty-ridden streets, there are many wealthier areas that provide every facility you might need. You can live off a mere $700 to $800 a month in Mexico, and this includes rent for a nice place, facilities, food, and any sightseeing.
Argentina
Argentina has been a popular tourist destination for many years. It has great restaurants, a rich history, and many places to explore. Not to mention, it's not very expensive to live here. A decent sized home can cost around $139,000, which is relatively cheap in relation to homes in the United States.
Vietnam
Vietnam has also become a popular tourist destination in recent years. There are many million-dollar luxury homes by the beach, but you can find a modest flat or small home for around $25,000 to $50,000 if you search in the right areas.
21.Why has Ecuador become a holiday destination for Americans?
A.Because housing is very cheap.
B.Because it has a low cost of living.
C.Because it is similar to America in many ways.
D.Because it has lots of nice places for sightseeing.
22.What do all of the four countries have in common?
A.All of them have great restaurants.
B.All of them have a low cost of living.
C.All of them are poor developing countries.
D.The middle-sized homes are a little expensive.
23.In which country is the U.S. dollar used for its currency?
A.Ecuador. B.Mexico. C.Argentina. D.Vietnam.

Writing can be a solitary life. I often sit at home for days, weeks and sometimes months working on book projects, articles and other assignments. Seriously, some days I want to chase the FedEx driver yelling, “Wait! I need to talk to you!”
And sometimes I don’t see the result of my work. On occasion, I’ll get a message online or even a letter that has been mailed to my publisher. Or I’ll run into someone who says, “I love what you write.” A dad once sent me a message to tell me he had heard me speak on the radio, and it had convinced him that he hadn’t been spending enough time with his children. And then he went on to tell me how that had changed his relationship with his family.
Those are the things that keep writers going and the moments that touch our hearts. But with my newest book, it has been different. Because of the television show, I’ve experienced something I’ve never met before.
I’ve gotten to see the faces of the people who are being affected by my works. My co-author, Brian Bird, and I asked purchasers of our books to post their pictures with the books when they received their copies or found them in stores. Dozens of pictures began popping up, with beautiful sweet faces. I was moved to tears. Visual proof showed that my work was touching lives.
Sweet friends, most of you probably aren’t writers. But you are given a specific task to accomplish. You’ve worked hard - sometimes for years - and maybe it seems like nothing is happening. Or you feel like what you’re doing isn’t of value. You’re wrong. You might not get to see the faces of those you’re reaching, but there is no doubt in my mind that whenever we’re faithful to do what we have to do, we are impacting the lives of others. So keep doing what you’re doing. I can promise you it’s worth it.
24.What does the author think of writing according to Paragraph 1?
A.Meaningless. B.Hard. C.Inspiring. D.Funny.
25.What makes the author continue writing?
A.His faithful publisher. B.People’s purchase of his books.
C.His readers’ reaction to his works. D.His good relationship with his family.
26.What can we infer about the author from the text?
A.He thinks all of our jobs are worthy to do. B.He seldom interacts with his readers.
C.He has shot many smiling purchasers. D.Brian Bird gave him much confidence in writing.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Write what you want B.Find the truth of life
C.Learn about reader’s needs D.Believe your work matters.

In the United States, the baggage of passengers from abroad will get inspected by the beagles (小猎兔犬) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Working with human officer partners, the beagles sniff (嗅) out probable threats to American agriculture.
An orange or an apple, for example, might contain a Mediterranean fruit fly. Ham could carry some disease. These could cause great damage to farmers’ crops and livestock (家畜). “Once we introduce something that is not part of the environment, maybe there aren’t any controls of it in the environment,” said USDA’s Lisa Davis at the National Detector Dog Training Center in Orlando, Florida. “The best thing for us to do is prevent it from coming across the border.”
When a beagle sniffs a bad smell, it signals its partner by sitting. The human partner then examines the baggage. When the dog is right — which happens 90 percent of the time — it gets something to eat.
“The dogs are not out there working,” explained Davis. “They’re out there playing. It’s a game to the dogs.” The human partners make sure the beagles get first-class medical attention, too. When the dogs finally stop working after 9 to 11 years, the USDA finds caring homes for them. It’s a dog’s life indeed!
Their human partners work and study harder. Most of them hold degrees in the biological sciences or related sciences.
How well do the beagles do their jobs? Davis said, “Each year our 54 teams find around 75,000 items.” Since even one dangerous item could cause great damage, that’s a great result for America’s agricultural environment.
28.What might be a problem with agricultural products brought into the US from abroad?
A.They may contain something illegal.
B.They often cause serious air pollution.
C.They often go bad and give off some bad smells.
D.They may harm America’s agricultural environment.
29.The beagles signal that they have found a threat by ________.
A.playing a game B.begging for a treat
C.sitting next to the item D.barking at their partners
30.According to the text, the beagles ________.
A.may fall ill because of some threats
B.often work harder than their partners
C.are doing a job that is really dangerous
D.get enough love and care from their partners
31.In the last paragraph, the author mentions the figures to show ________.
A.the beagles enjoy inspecting items
B.the beagles play an important role
C.the number of threats found by the beagles is big
D.one dangerous item could cause great damage

For people suffering from depression (抑郁), there’s an all-natural treatment they should use—getting more exercise. It could help fight depression, even if people have a genetic risk, new research shows.
For the study, researchers collected information from nearly 8,000 people and found those with related genes (基因) were more likely to have depression over the next two years after examining them. But that was less likely for people who were more active at the study’s start, even if they had a family history of depression. Higher levels of physical activity helped protect even those with the highest genetic risk of depression.
Both high-intensity (高强度) exercise and low-intensity activities were associated with a reduced risk of depression. Adding four hours of exercise a week could lower the risk of a new episode (一段经历) of depression by 17%, according to the study. “Our findings strongly suggest that, when it comes to depression, being physically active has the potential to remove the added risk of future episodes in individuals who are genetically risky,” said lead author Karmel Choi. “On average, about 35 additional minutes of physical activity each day may help people to reduce their risk and protect against future depression episodes.”
Depression is a common mental illness globally, with more than 264 million people affected. “Depression is so ubiquitous, and that underlines the need for effective approaches that can impact as many people as possible,” Choi said. And mental health and primary care providers can use the findings to advise patients that there’s something meaningful they can do to lower their risk of depression.
32.How did the researchers reach their conclusion?
A.By analyzing a mass of data.
B.By conducting genetic research.
C.By comparing various levels of activity.
D.By tracking the subjects for many years.
33.What does the study show about depression?
A.Physical activity betters medical treatment.
B.Exercise may decrease and prevent it.
C.Different levels of exercise intensity matter the same.
D.Exercising 35 minutes daily is the most effective treatment.
34.What does the underlined word “ubiquitous” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Simple. B.Complex. C.Unusual. D.Common.
35.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To discuss a disease. B.To introduce a scientific study.
C.To analyze a genetic risk. D.To explain a phenomenon.
Let's be honest here: random acts of kindness make us feel good. They make others feel good. They help benefit society in small ways, and those small benefits can turn into huge ones. Being an everyday hero means willingly and joyfully choosing random acts of kindness to make the world a bit brighter. 36 The following ideas will help you start.
Leave a space cleaner than you found it. If you eat out, keep your table clean after you're finished, making it a little easier for the waiter. At home, keep your things organized. 37
Be kind to strangers. It's well-known that everyone is fighting separate but equally different battles. Although you might not be able to understand or relate to everyone's tough situations, you can offer unconditional kindness and patience. 38 Maybe the fast-food worker has two other jobs and children at home. Although you don't know their situations, kindness is always appreciated.
39 This can be a little bit troublesome, and you need to be sensitive to people's needs. The easiest way to determine whether someone needs help is to ask, and respect their answer. When close friends and loved ones are struggling, your support is to say, “I love you.”
40 By donating the things that you don't need, want, or use, you allow another person to benefit from them rather than sending them to a landfill.
A.Try to offer your seats to the elder people.
B.Help someone who's struggling.
C.Choose to donate your used things.
D.Don't leave messes for others to clean up.
E.Maybe the old man deals with chronic pain.
F.Being an everyday hero is amazing and deserves others' respect.
G.If you can, take five minutes and be an everyday hero.

Up until last week, I would say that absolutely, positively, undoubtedly you should stay away from an unfriendly person. But now I'm not so sure.
I was going to a sports-and-nature day camp, and almost everything about it was fantastic: the activities, the food, the teachers, and almost all of the kids. The reason I say "almost" is because there was this one girl, Elizabeth, who was always annoyed, impatient and seemed determined to ruin a fantastic time.
When I saw her sitting alone in the burning sun at lunch one day, I said, “Want to join us under that nice shady tree over there?”
Elizabeth said, “No, I really don't.”
When we needed another person for our volleyball team and a boy called Jasper invited Elizabeth to play with us, Elizabeth said, “I' m pretty sure that if I wanted to play volleyball, I'd already be playing volleyball.”
After a few more unfriendly comments like that, I decided to keep away from Elizabeth. I mean, if she wanted to have a terrible time, that was one thing. But there were only a few more days of camp left, and I wanted to make the best of them.
Well, you know how just when you decide to do things one way, life decides to do things the opposite way. It so happened that we were going on a nature hike and our teacher paired everyone up with a partner. Guess who my partner turned out to be!
“I can't believe how warm it is,” I said, trying to make small talk as we started out. “Do you like hot days like this?”
“I honestly don't care about things like the weather,” Elizabeth whispered.
I smiled nervously, trying to think of a new topic. “What do you like to do for fun?”
“I like to walk in peace and quiet,” Elizabeth replied.
“OK,"” I said, taking the hint (暗示).
And that was that. We had the quietest, most peaceful hike in the history of the universe.
Until—

W: Yes. It’s Pink and Say by Patricia Polacco. I read it last year and I read it with tears. It’s really worth reading.
M: It is a touching love story?

W: Yes. I’ll go back and fetch them for you now. Oh, nice tea. Thank you for it.

The government first put forward the idea of building a science museum in our town in 1976. Construction of the building started in March 1988 and was completed in September 1990. The museum had its opening the following year. There are over 500 items on display forever at the museum. Among them, the most important item is a large device: the Energy Machine. Another item worth seeing is the DC-3 airplane which was the first item moved into the museum. The museum also regularly organizes shows on topics related to science and modern technology. The Robot Show helps you understand our dreams for the future. To have fun doing scientific experiments, you can go to the Laboratory to explore the science behind our childhood toys. Or you can go to the Materials Classroom to make use of common materials in the kitchen to discover the secret of science. Other facilities include a 200-seat Lecture Hall and a Resource Center. A standard ticket is $20 and a group ticket is $14. Doctors, nurses and senior people aged 60 or above can enter the museum at half price. There is no entrance fee for students.

And then he went on to tell me how that had changed his relationship with his family.(有时我看不到我工作的结果。

I can promise you it’s worth it.”

It’s a dog’s life indeed!”(戴维斯解释说:“狗不是在外面工作。”

“Hey!” I said. “Why is that bird in the middle of the path?” As we got closer, the bird tried to flee into the grass, but in vain. “Poor little creature,” Elizabeth murmured, her voice sounding gentler than I’d ever heard, “He must have had his wing or foot injured, just as my grandpa.” “Your grandpa? What happened to him?” I asked concernedly.
“My grandpa slipped and broke his arm the day the camp started,” Elizabeth answered, checking the bird. “No wonder you are so frustrated,” I thought to myself. “Your grandpa will be back on his feet soon.” I comforted. She nodded, smiling at me for the first time. After that, Elizabeth began to join me in my various topics and seemed to get along well with us. Only then did I realize that it might be worth giving someone a second chance. She may be going through a terrible time and just doesn’t know how to deal with it.
