It is one of the most respected centers of higher education in the United States. Many young people like to live and work in America’s largest city. But if you do not know where to start, it helps to belong to a community.
The city has a place where students have a chance to meet and find their place in the world. It is a private, non—profit center called International House, which serves students from more than 100 countries.
Adjibola Amzat, who is from Nigeria, lives there. “Without the International House, New York would have been a very, very lonely place for many people,” he says. Amzat worked as a news reporter. He left his job to study at Columbia University. He registered for a graduate degree program in journalism. Amzat likes International House. He thinks it has helped to improve his experience at Columbia University.
International House welcomes graduate students from many universities. They have a chance to attend many cultural celebrations throughout the year. The students say their interaction with each other has led to new friendships and personal growth.
Akmyrat Tuyliyev is from Turkmenistan. He says he finds people from so many areas at International House. Young children often “read” picture books. They’re attracted by the colorful scenery and the realistic characters that contribute to fascinating plots.
Unfortunately, some children can’t use these resources, even if they do know how to read. Take three-year-old Elodie Bateson for example. Elodie was born with under-developed eyes and has retinal detachments (视网膜脱落), making her visually impaired.
It is because of people like Elodie that Tom Yeh, head of the Tactile Picture Books Project, has started printing 3D books, so they can feel the illustrations in picture books.
The first book Tom Yeh printed was Goodnight Moon, a popular children’s book about a rabbit going to sleep and wishing good night to his surroundings. In the 3D version of this book, children can feel each thing that the rabbit says good night to, whether it is a cow jumping over the moon, a balloon, or a dollhouse.
Generally, when children grow older, they read by using Braille, a language that was invented by Louis Braille in 1824. It uses different patterns of raised dots representing different letters. Readers can then feel the dots and mentally translate the patterns they feel into words. The only problem is that many blind children do not start learning Braille until they are about six years old.
Another reason why 3D printed books are such a valuable resource is that children don’t have to know how to read to understand them. However, without these, visually impaired kids are losing six developmental years vital to their growth since they can’t take advantage of picture books.
When 3D picture books are printed, plastic is layered (分层放置) repeatedly over a single shape: the shape of the illustration. These raised pictures created through layered plastic serve as substitutes (替代品) for the Braille letters that little children have no knowledge of.
28.What does the underlined word “impaired” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Damaged. B.Disappeared. C.Defeated. D.Unmatched.
29.What can we know about Braille from paragraph 5?
A.Most people can translate Braille into words.
B.The blind at any age can read by using Braille.
C.Blind kids begin learning Braille at six years old or so.
D.Braille uses similar patterns of raised dots to stand for different letters.
30.We can know that the illustrations in 3D books are raised ______ .
A.pictures B.letters C.dots D.codes
31.What is the aim of the Tactile Picture Books Project?
A.To encourage kids to read books. B.To teach the blind children Braille.
C.To cure visually impaired children. D.To help the blind children read picture books.
D
Large clothing companies are developing robots to make clothes. The process of using robots or computers for human work, known as automation, has raised concerns about jobs for many people around the world.
Many clothing companies are unsure about publicly discussing automation. Such reports may cause public concern that automation will take jobs from workers in poor countries. For this concern, one industry inventor, Jonathan Zornow, said he had received online criticism and a death threat in connection with his work.
Sewing, the act of using a needle and thread to make clothes, is especially difficult to automate. Robots do not have the fine touch skill that human hands do. Robots are getting better, but it will take years to fully develop their ability to handle cloth.
Work at a leading scientific and technological enterprise grew out of efforts to create software to guide robots that can handle all types of materials, such as thin wire cables. Researchers soon realized one of the best targets for automation was clothing. The enterprise worked with the Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing (ARM) Institute in Pittsburgh. They identified a San Francisco company with a promising way to deal with the fabric problem. The start-up hardened fabric with chemicals. The hardened fabric was then similar to other material robots could handle, like metal for, example. Once the robots finished sewing the piece, the clothing was washed to remove the chemical.
There are other efforts to automate sewing factories. Another company in Georgia has developed a machine that can sew clothing by pulling the cloth over a special table, for example.
Sanjeev Bahl, who opened a small jeans factory in downtown Los Angeles two years ago, has studied the start-up’s machines. He is preparing to set up his first experimental machine. At his factory in September, he said that many sewing jobs are ready for a new process. “If it works,” he said, “I think there’s no reason not to have large-scale jeans manufacturing here again.”
32.Why was Jonathan Zornow threatened?
A.His work was not fruitless.
B.His robots were too dangerous to use.
C.His factory adopted human-controlled machines.
D.His invention would endanger workers’ employment.
33.What can we learn about the San Francisco company?
A.It produced fabric softener. B.It processed all kinds of worktables.
C.It had a partnership with a big business. D.It worked to develop some metal products.
34.What is Sanjeev Bahl’s attitude to the robotic machines?
A.Tolerant. B.Suspicious. C.Conservative. D.Approving.
35.What is the main idea of the text?
A.Robots are as intelligent as humans. B.Robots are not to replace sewing workers.
C.Companies develop robots to make clothes. D.Companies increase the production of clothes.

Over the next 2 years and change, he built the car back up from the frame, replacing everything that needed to be replaced, He rebuilt the engine, and cleaned everything up, and put it all back together. In the summer of 1994, the car restoration was finally completed!
In the fall of 1999, after having kid number 5, my father decided to sell the car in order to better support the family. The day that he sold this car is the very first memory that I recalled as a child. I remember the very last ride that we took in the car, on the day when it was sold. I remember the mixed expression on my father’s face. Growing up, every time my father and I went to a car show, I was always told to keep aneye out for the GTO. It never showed up.
In the spring-summer of 2019, 20 years after it had been sold, I decided to start looking for the car. I dug up a few pictures of the car showing the old license plates, and sent them to a few cop friends to see if anything would turn up, all in vain.
I finally posted the pictures to a few more Facebook pages, and after some searching, I was able to find One Facebook page that was titled in English “GTO club Denmark”. The page had 82 members. I shared the story again, hoping that somebody would recognize the car.

66.Dear Tom,
I’m delighted to hear that you will come to my school to study. I’d like to make a brief introduction of my school to you.
My school was founded in 1953. The campus is beautiful with grass, flowers and a lot of trees. We also have two nice teaching buildings. In addition, it is well equipped with teaching facilities, such as a computer in each classroom. Above all, there are many excellent teachers in our school, whose classes are interesting. They are responsible, from whom I can learn a lot.
I hope my introduction will be of help for you. Looking forward to your coming.
Yours,
Li Hua
67. One day, I woke up to a video of the car from a man saying he knew the owner. He introduced himself as Martin. He got me in touch with the owner and translated for us since the owner did not speak English. The owner was excited and surprised to hear the story, but since he had been with it for so many years, he was yet unwilling to part with the car. The frequent communication between us continued for several months.
In January 2021, Martin informed me that the owner was willing to sell the car. I was amazed at the surprising news. I thanked the owner and Martin and tried to foot the bill to get the car back without my father knowing. I had it shipped in a container before surprising my father on Memorial day of 2021. It was really a big surprise. You can never ignore the broad smile on my father’s face. It was years since he smiled so sincerely.
