I have always been big. I am comfortable with my body but there is a price to pay for being different.

In primary school, I was crazy about gymnastics (体操) and was actually the team leader in my final year, but I had to make up for my shortcomings. Long after the other girls had left, I would still be in the school hall, trying my best to practice again and again without the coach around. It took months to master the ribbon (带子) and in the early days, I always got my ribbon in a terrible knot (结). However, I carried on and improved a lot.

Whenever I went up in a competition, I always got the sense that the crowd did not expect much from an overweight child in front of them. They talked about my weight in low voices. However, I just kept silent because I decided to let my ribbon do the talking. I worked harder on my ribbon and it showed.

I was the winner in National Championship that year, but that was not the best thing I got from hours of tiring practice. Blind boxes have become popular in China these days. When you buy one, you never know exactly what you’re going to find inside. Some people think this is the reason that makes them fun to buy.

As a young man, Mario was a skilled truck driver. He had a wife and two sons. But one night, his elder son died of a sudden illness.
