This year’s winner of Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, the enobanting Disney movie Encanto (魔法满屋) shines a light on the colourful cultural highlights of Colombia. It might not instantly spring to mind as an obvious destination for a family adventure, but Colombia brims with diverse experiences.
Walk on the wild side
Encanto references Colombia’s surprising biodiversity—something very much in evidence in the Tayrona National Park, on the edge of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, one of the world’s highest coastal mountain ranges. Keep your eyes and ears open for a colourful cast of jungle creatures, including black howler monkeys, jewel-like hummingbirds, and even a jaguar.
Delve underground
Of all Colombia’s eclectic buildings, one of the best ones to explore is the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá. Built in the 1930s within a salt mine tunneled into a mountain in the city of Zipaquirá, the church, which was used by the miners, was part of the inspiration behind Bruno’s room in Encanto and is now part of an activity complex with a family-friendly tour along the former mining route, as well as climbing walls.
Wake up and smell the coffee
Encanto is all about family, and one of the best places for some family time is the Parque del Café in Quindio. No ordinary theme park, along with rides and shows for different ages, there’s an interactive coffee museum, an eco-trail through a coffee plantation and food stalls serving up delicious, coffee-based products.
Tune in to a festival
Time your trip to coincide with the Carnival of Barranquilla, which takes place over four days in February or March. UNESCO-listed and one of the country’s most important folklore celebrations, the festival has its roots in the 19th century and is a treat for all ages, with live performances, art and colorful costumes.
1. Which would be suitable for a family of nature lovers?
A. Walk on the wild side B. Delve underground
C. Wake up and smell the coffee D. Tune in to a festival
2. What do we know about Delve underground?
A. It is famous for the salt mine.
B. It is still used by miners as a church.
C. It partly inspired the design of a room in the movie.
D. It has food stalls serving up delicious, salt-based products.
3. Where is this passage taken from?
A. A movie review. B. A travel brochure
C. A medical magazine D. A scientific journal
B
For the past three months, I have been moonlighting (兼职) as a tea lady. A few weeks into lockdown and at the height of the COVID-19 crisis, my father’s care home had become desperately understaffed. So I volunteered my services.
I will admit that I also wanted to keep an eye on my father. Ever since he was diagnosed with dementia (痴呆), I had become concerned about his well-being. So I. turned up, put on a plastic apron and began wheeling a teapot around the ground floor.
It was a peculiar kind of job at first. I saw how the carers were putting themselves on the line every day. And how do you ask a dementia patient who has lost almost all their powers of speech and hearing how many sugars they want in their tea? I would often come away sweating. And saddened. The home lost a lot of patients to COVID-19 in a short span of time and seeing the suddenly empty beds was shocking.
But it was also - surprisingly - good fun. There were jokes shared by carers and the stories the elderly residents told. The place grew on me until it became the highlight of my day. I looked forward to seeing the old lady who would say “Thank you” and blow me a kiss every time I left her a cup of tea. Another said he’d started painting later in life and now his amazing work hung all around his room. And there was a former university lecturer who had researched nursing and never left a crossword unfinished.
The figures I had passed so often taught me that sitting by a sunny window drinking a cup of warm tea held its value. I have read about the meditative (冥想) effects of running and I found the same absorbing feeling in the ritual of making tea. It is simple, wholesome, and brings calmness. To me, this has been lockdown’s greatest gift.
4. Why did the author choose to volunteer in the care home?
A. Because it was short of workers. B. Because she was free at that time.
C. Because her father wanted her company. D. Because she was interested in voluntary work.
5. What made the work of making tea difficult in the care home?
A. The huge needs of tea from the patients.
B. The increasing seriousness of COVID-19.
C. The failure of speaking and hearing of some patients.
D. The lack of natural resources during the lockdown.
6. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The knowledge the author learned. B. The daily life in the care house.
C. The challenges of making tea. D. The great fun the job brings.
7. What does the author want to tell us through this passage?
A. It is never too late to learn. B. The parent-child relationship is the most important.
C. Sometimes we should value little things. D. Where there is a will, there is a way.
C
You’ve likely been unable to avoid talk of the metaverse (虚拟空间/元宇宙) in the past few months. The term, first coined by sci-fi author Neal Stephenson in a 1992 novel, has become a vision of the future of technology in our lives. And if that is to be believed, it’s where we’ll be living the rest of our digital lives.
“The metaverse is a further combination of our physical and digital lives,” says Cathy Hackl of Futures Intelligence Group. Put plainly, the metaverse is a 3D virtual space that can be accessed through virtual reality goggles (眼镜), adding elements of the digital on top of our day-to-day lives. You could attend concerts and conferences in the metaverse, staged in a 3D digital representation of a nightclub or conference center. Elsewhere, you’ll shop for shoes in a virtual Nike store or order food in a virtual McDonald’s and have it delivered to your real-world home.
“It’s the future of the Internet. But it’s also about further connectivity,” says Hackl. So far, most of the attention around the metaverse has been focused on the company formerly known as Facebook, which rebranded last year as Meta in an indication of how strongly it believes in the future of the metaverse. Founder Mark Zuckerberg wants a billion of us to live, work, and play in the metaverse by 2030.
But Hackl warns people not to view the social media giant as the center of the metaverse. “It’s not just one company,” she says. “No single company can build it, either.” It’s also not enabled by a single technology, even though right now the way to “enter” the metaverse is to wear a pair of virtual reality goggles. While the early running may be made by Meta, the momentum (势头) will be picked up by others. And just because we have an idea of what the metaverse will look like now, it doesn’t mean that’s what it’ll end up as, Hackl warns. “The way I explain it is we’re in a high-speed train, destination metaverse,” she says. “We don’t know the stops, but we kind of know where we’re heading.”
8. What is the metaverse according to the passage?
A. It is just a word from a sci-fi novel.
B. It is a 3D virtual space that can connect future life.
C. It is where we’ll be living the rest of our digital lives.
D. It is a virtual world that interacts with the real world through VR goggles.
9. Why does the writer mention concerts and conference in paragraph 2?
A. To introduce how the metaverse works.
B. To recommend a new way of enjoying life in the future.
C To tell readers what his life will be like in the metaverse.
D. To provide examples of how physical and digital lives combine.
10. What can we know about Meta from the passage?
A. It is the centre of the metaverse.
B. It is a social media giant like Facebook.
C. It seems to take a leading part in the field of the metaverse.
D. It believes all of us could live, work and play in the metaverse by 2030.
11. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?
A. We won’t stop until we realize the metaverse.
B. It matters who will be in charge of the building of the metaverse.
C. Hackl is not familiar with the train she took but knows where to get off.
D. Though not knowing the process, Hackl is sure about the bright future of the metaverse.
D
This summer we witnessed interview teams at the North Pole wearing short sleeve shirts due to the warm weather. A study published on Aug 29 revealed more concerning issues in the supposedly coldest area of the world. Zombie ice (僵尸冰) from a massive Greenland ice sheet was confirmed to be melting, which would finally raise global sea levels by at least 10 inches on its own, reported Associated Press (AP).
Zombie ice is the kind of ice that is still attached to thicker areas of ice, but is no longer getting fed by larger glaciers (冰川). Since glaciers are getting less snow to complement the amount of ice melted, once the zombie ice is melted, it cannot be re-formed.
Scientists decided to look at the balance of the ice. In perfect balance, snow in the mountains of Greenland flows down and thickens the sides of glaciers, balancing out what’s melting on the edges, according to AP. But in the last few decades, there is less refill and more melting, creating an imbalance.
Study co-author William Colgan at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland told AP that 3.3 percent of Greenland’s total ice volume would melt eventually. “Hunger” would be a good phrase for what’s happening to the ice, Colgan added.
With a great number of natural resources buried under the earth, areas of melted ice revealed treasures that attracted the world’s richest men. According to CNN, in early August, there was a “treasure hunt” in Greenland. Billionaires, including Bill Gates and others, financially backed KoBold Metals, a US-based mineral exploration company, to explore the rare metals under the glaciers in Greenland. The company told CNN that since there were enough minerals to power hundreds of millions of electric vehicles, the critical resource is capable of powering the green energy transition.
While investors are taking advantage of global warming experts express their concerns that the mineral exploration is likely to worsen the local environment, draining (榨干) up the world’s resources at a faster rate.
12. What can we learn about the Zombie ice?
A. It was caused by warm weather. B. It increased by at least 10 inches.
C. It started to become less. D. It no longer existed.
13. Which of the following might William Colgan agree with?
A. The ice in Greenland needed refill badly.
B. 3.3 percent of the ice in the world would melt.
C. Snow there could make up for the melted ice.
D. Melting only happened on the edge of the glaciers.
14. What can be inferred about the mineral exploration?
A. It was started by Bill Gates. B. It was environmentally friendly.
C. It has drained up the world’s resources. D. All people are not in support of it.
15 Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. The Increasing Temperature at the North Pole. B. The Melting Zombie Ice from Greenland.
C. The Findings of Associate Press. D. The Rising Global Sea Levels.
