    IV. Reading Comprehension(34’)
Directions: Read the following two passages. Each passage is followed by several questions. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
    (A)
I was grocery shopping recently in my hometown, N.Y., when I heard a young voice rise. “Mom, come here, you’ve gotten see this! There’s this lady here my size!”
The mother was mortified and rushed to a boy she called Mikey, who looked to be about seven; then she turned to me to apologize. “Oh, I’m so sorry.”
I smiled and told her, “It’s okay.” Then I looked at her wide-eyed son and said, “Hi, Mikey, I’m Darryl Kramer. How are you?”
He studied me from head to toe, and asked, “Are you a little mommy?” “Yes, I have a son,” I answered.
“Why are you so little?” he asked.
“It’s the way I was made,” I said.
It takes only one glance to see my uniqueness. I stand three feet, nine inches tall. I am an achondroplasia dwarf Like most achondroplasia dwarfs, I have two average-height parents, as well as an average-height brother. When I was born, my mother was told in the hospital that I was a dwarf. Not knowing a lot about dwarfism, my mom’s main concern was my health. Our family doctor put her mind at ease when he told her he felt I would not have any major medical concerns. He was right.
When I was growing up, my parents encouraged me to do all the things the kids around me did. So when my neighbors got two-wheel bikes, I got a two-wheel bike. When they roller-skated, I roller-skated. I didn’t see anything different in my parents’ eyes about me. Why should I look at myself differently? Therefore, I just tried to smile and accept the fact that I was going to be noticed my whole life. I was determined to make my uniqueness an advantage rather than a disadvantage. And when I accepted myself as I was, life wasn’t that difficult after all. Most people around me were friendly and protective.
I’m 47 now, and it’s the children’s questions that make my life special. “Why are you so short? How old are you? Are you a mommy?” When I talk with children, they leave content that their questions have been answered. My hope is that in taking time with them, I will encourage them to accept their peers, whatever size and shape they come in, to know that every human deserves due respect.
    51. The underlined word mortified is closest in meaning to________.
    A. angry B. ashamed C. interested D. grateful
    52. What made the author accept her physical uniqueness?
    A. That she almost died at birth.
    B. That her parents loved her more than her ordinary-sized brother.
    C. That her parents treated her as an ordinary person.
    D. That all the people around her were protective and kind.
    53. Why is the author patient with children’s questions?
    A. Because she wants to tell them about the rare disease.
    B. Because she notices that children are usually kinder than adults.
    C. Because she also has a child and wants to be a loving mum.
    D. Because she expects them to respect every human.
B 52. C 53. D

Therefore, I just tried to smile and accept the fact that I was going to be noticed my whole life. I was determined to make my uniqueness an advantage rather than a disadvantage.

    (D)
The 2012 London Olympics had enough problems to worry about. But one more has just been added — a communications blackout caused by solar storms.
After a period of calm within the Sun, scientists have detected the signs of a flesh cycle of sunspots that could peak in 2012, just in time for the arrival of the Olympic torch in London.
Now scientists believe that this peak could result in vast solar explosions that could throw billions of tons of charged matter towards the Earth, causing strong solar storms that could jam the telecommunications satellites and interact links sending five Olympic broadcast from London.
“The Sun’s activity has a strong influence on the Earth. The Olympics could be in the middle of the next solar maximum which could affect the functions of communications satellites,” said Professor Richard Harrison, head of space physics at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire.
At the peak of the cycle, violent outbursts called coronal mass ejections occur in the Sun's atmosphere, throwing out great quantities of electrically-charged matter. “A coronal mass ejection can carry a billion tons of solar material into space at over a million kilometres per hour. Such events can expose astronauts to a deadly amount, can disable satellites, cause power failures on Earth and disturb communications,” Professor Harrison added. The risk is greatest during a solar maximum when there is the greatest number of sunspots.
Next week in America, NASA is scheduled to launch a satellite for monitoring solar activity called the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), which will take images of the Sun that are 10 times clearer than the most advanced televisions available.
The Rutherford Appleton Laboratory helped to make the high-tech cameras that will capture images of the solar flares and explosions as they occur.
Professor Richard Hold away, the lab’s director, said that the SDO should be able to provide early warning of a solar flare or explosion big enough to affect satellite communications on Earth. “If we have advance warning, we’ll be able to reduce the damage. What you don’t want is things switching off for a week with no idea of what’s caused the problem,” he said.
    60. The phrase “communications blackout” in paragraph 1 most probably refers to during the 2012 Olympics.
    A. the extinguishing of the Olympic torch B. the collapse of broadcasting systems
    C. the transportation breakdown in London D. the destruction of weather satellites
    61. What can be inferred about the solar activity described in the passage?
    A. The most fatal matter from the corona falls onto Earth.
    B. The solar storm peak occurs in the middle of each cycle.
    C. It takes several seconds for the charged matter to reach Earth.
    D. The number of sunspots declines after coronal mass ejections.
    62. According to the passage, NASA will launch a satellite to _________.
    A. take images of the solar system B. provide early warning of thunderstorms
    C. keep track of solar activities D. improve the communications on Earth
    63. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
    A. Solar Storms: An Invisible Killer B. Solar Storms: Earth Environment in Danger
    C. Solar Storms: Threatening the Human Race D. Solar Storms: Human Activities to Be Troubled
B 61. D 62. C 63. D

根据第三段“Now scientists believe that this peak could result in vast solar explosions that could throw billions of tons of charged matter towards the Earth, causing strong solar storms that could jam the telecommunications satellites and interact links sending five Olympic broadcast from London.(现在,科学家们认为,这个峰值可能会导致巨大的太阳爆炸,向地球抛射数十亿吨带电物质,引发强烈的太阳风暴,可能会干扰通信卫星,并影响从伦敦发送五次奥运广播的连接)”可知,第一段中的“通讯中断”一词很可能指的是2012年奥运会期间广播系统的崩溃。
根据倒数第四段中“The risk is greatest during a solar maximum when there is the greatest number of sunspots.(在太阳高峰期,当太阳黑子数量最多时,风险是最大的)”可推知,日冕物质抛射后太阳黑子的数量减少。
根据倒数第三段“Next week in America, NASA is scheduled to launch a satellite for monitoring solar activity called the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), which will take images of the Sun that are 10 times clearer than the most advanced televisions available. (下周在美国,NASA计划发射一颗监测太阳活动的卫星——太阳动力学观测卫星,它将拍摄比目前最先进的电视清晰10倍的太阳图像)”可知,美国宇航局将发射一颗卫星来跟踪太阳活动。故选C。
    【63题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“The 2012 London Olympics had enough problems to worry about. But one more has just been added — a communications blackout caused by solar storms.(2012年伦敦奥运会的问题已经够多了。但是最近又增加了一个——由太阳风暴引起的通讯中断)”结合文章主要说明了2012年伦敦奥运会被由太阳风暴引起的通讯中断而困扰,介绍了其发生原因以及人们对此的应对措施。由此可知,D选项“太阳风暴:人类活动的麻烦”最符合文章标题。故选D。

Blind imitation is self-destruction. To those who do not recognize their unique worth, imitation appears attractive; to those who know their strength, imitation is unacceptable. In the early stages of skill or character development, imitation is helpful. When I first learned to cook, I used recipes and turned out some tasty dishes. ___64___Why follow someone else’s way of cooking when I could create my own? Imitating role models is like using training wheels on a child’s bicycle; they help you get going, but once you find your own balance, you fly faster and farther without relying on them.
___65___ If, as a child, you observed people whose lives were bad, you may have accepted their fear and pain as normal and gone on to follow what they did. If you do not make strong choices for yourself, you will get the results of the weak choices of others.
In the field of entertainment, our culture glorifies celebrities. Those stars look great on screen. But when they step off screen, their personal lives may be disastrous.___66___
Blessed is the person willing to act on their sudden desire to create something unique. Think of the movies, books, teachers, and friends that have affected you most deeply. They touched you because their creations were motivated by inspiration, not desperation. The world is changed not by those who do what has been done before them, but by those who do what has been done inside them. ___67___The problem a creator faces is not running out of material; it is what to do with the material knocking at the door of imagination.
    A. If you are going to follow someone, focus on their talent, not their bad character or unacceptable behaviors.
    B. In daily life, imitation can hurt us if we subconsciously hold poor role models.
    C. Creative people have an endless resource of ideas.
    D. I was very proud of myself.
E But soon I grew bored.
    F. Study your role models, accept the gifts they have given, and leave behind what does not serve.
E 65. B 66. A 67. C
根据上文“When I first learned to cook, I used recipes and turned out some tasty dishes.(当我第一次学习烹饪时,我用食谱做出一些美味的菜肴)”以及后文“Why follow someone else’s way of cooking when I could create my own?(当我可以创造自己的烹饪方式时,为什么要遵循别人的烹饪方式呢?)”
根据本段内容“If, as a child, you observed people whose lives were bad, you may have accepted their fear and pain as normal and gone on to follow what they did. If you do not make strong choices for yourself, you will get the results of the weak choices of others.(当你还是个孩子的时候,如果你观察过那些生活糟糕的人,你可能会把他们的恐惧和痛苦当作正常的事情来接受,然后跟随他们的脚步。如果你不为自己做出强有力的选择,你就会得到别人软弱选择的结果)”可知,后文的例子表明不好的榜样,会带来负面的影响,故B选项“在日常生活中,如果我们下意识地树立了不好的榜样,模仿就会伤害我们”符合语境,故选B。
    【66题详解】
根据上文“In the field of entertainment, our culture glorifies celebrities. Those stars look great on screen. But when they step off screen, their personal lives may be disastrous.(在娱乐领域,我们的文化颂扬名人。那些明星在银幕上看起来很棒。但当他们走出银幕,他们的个人生活可能是灾难性的)”可知,上文提到了明星在银幕上看着光鲜,实际上个人生活很糟糕,说明树立榜样不能仅凭外在,要多关注内在,故A选项“如果你要跟随某人,关注他们的才能,而不是他们的坏性格或不可接受的行为”符合语境,故选A。
    【67题详解】
根据上文“Blessed is the person willing to act on their sudden desire to create something unique. Think of the movies, books, teachers, and friends that have affected you most deeply. They touched you because their creations were motivated by inspiration, not desperation. The world is changed not by those who do what has been done before them, but by those who do what has been done inside them.(有福的人,是愿意按照自己突然产生的创造独特事物的愿望去行动的人。
