Once there was a piano player in a bar. People came just to hear him play. But one night, a lady asked him to sing a song.
“I don’t sing.” said the man.
But the lady told the waiter, “I’m tired of listening to the piano. I want the player to sing!”
The waiter shouted across the room, “Hey friend! If you want to get paid, sing a song!
So he did. He had never sung in public before. Now he was singing for the very first time! Nobody had ever heard the song Mona Lisa sung so beautifully!
He had talent he was sitting on! He may have lived the rest of his life as a no-name piano player in a no-name bar. But once he found, by accident, that he could sing well, he went on working hard and became one of the best-known singers in the US. His name was Nat King Cole.
You, too, have skills and abilities. You may not feel that your talent is great, but it may be better than you think. With hard work, most skills can be improved. Besides, you may have no success at all if you just sit on your talent.

When I was a kid in Minnesota, watermelon was expensive. One of my father’s friends, Bernie, was a rich businessman, who owned a large store in St. Paul.
Every summer, when the first watermelons arrived. Bernie would call dad and I would go to Bernie’s place. We’d sit on the edge of the dock (码头), feel dangling (摇晃), and got ready for a big meal.
Bernie would take his knife, cut our first watermelon, hand us both a big piece and sit down next to us. Then we’d bury our faces in watermelon, eating only the heart -- the reddest, juiciest, firmest, sweetest, most seed-free part and throw away the rest.
Bernie was my father’s idea of a rich man. I always thought it was because he was such a successful businessman. Years later, I realized that it was not Bernie’s wealth itself but his way of dealing with it that my father liked. Bernie knew how to stop working, get together with friends and eat only the heart of the watermelon.
What I learned from Bernie is that being rich is a state of mind. Some of us, no matter how much money we have, will never be free enough to eat only the heart of the watermelon. If you don’t take the time to dangle your feet over the dog and enjoy life’s small pleasure. Your work is probably hurting your life.
For many years, I forgot that lesson I learned as a kid on the loading dock. I was too busy making all the money I could.
Well, I’ve relearned it. I hope I have time left to enjoy the success of others and to take pleasure in the day. That’s the heart of the watermelon. I’ve learned again to throw the rest away.
( ) 24. How did the writer and his father eat the watermelon?
A. They ate it in a polite way. | B. They only ate its best part. |
C. They ate every part of it. | D. They shared only one piece. |
( ) 25. In the eyes of the writer’s father, Bernie ___________________.
A. was just a rich businessman | B. worked hard all the time |
C. lived a rich but healthy life | D. knew how to make money |

A. one has to work hard to reach his goal | B. a friend in need is a friend in deed |
C. watermelon is the healthiest fruit | D. one should keep work-life balance |

Have you ever put your old clothes into the donation (捐赠) box in your neighborhood? If not, you can do it right now because the clothes donation is becoming a trend in Urumqi.
“From time to time, my mother clears out the clothes which I no longer wear. You know, we teenagers are growing fast. I think it’s a good way to help others.” Lin Tao, a junior student says.
“I often pick out some of my clothes which are out of style after going shopping. Then I’ll put them into the donation box.” Miss Li, a pretty young lady says.
“That seems like a good idea. Some clothes in the box are quite new. People can either wear them or use them to make things such as handbags and pencil cases.” Mrs. Wang, an old woman says. “Sometimes I also look through the box for some nice clothes.”
However, there are some problems along with the popularity of clothes donation. Recently, a UTV reporter from Focus on the City has made a survey. Here are the results:
◎ The box is full of clothes in a short time. There’s no more room for people to give away clothes.
◎ Some people sell the clothes in the donation box for making money instead of wearing them.
◎ Some communities set the box In suitable places. So there are few clothes in it.
◎ Many clothes are too old and shabby (破烂的).
“What’s worse,” one of the staff in a community added, “We quite often see people throw rubbish into the box when they pass by. We’ve tried to stop them several times but failed. It has been the most serious problem since we set the box.”
In order to make the donation box work in an efficient way, our government is taking action. Clothes donation will be better-organized and it will be more convenient for people in need to take the clothes away.

“Just because you can’t see something, that doesn’t mean it’s not there.” This old saying is quite meaningful for British sculptor (雕刻家) Willard. The items he creates are so small that most of them fit on the head of a pin. You can see them clearly only through a microscope (显微镜).
Many people want to own his art pieces. He’s been honored by the Queen of England for his great art achievement. At very one of his exhibitions, the question is always the same. How does he do it?
The answer is very, very carefully. So carefully, in fact, that he actually slows his breathing down and works in between breaths. Willard usually works harder a microscope using special tools that he creates. To paint his works, he uses the hair from a fly as a paintbrush.
Making these detailed works is a very long and difficult process, and it isn’t always enjoyable. “It is a terrible dream when I start but a nice dream when I finish,” he says. A single item can take at least several weeks to complete.
People have asked Willard why he chose to do something that needed effort (努力) and took time. His interest in making small things began when he was five. He started creating houses and playgrounds for ants. Willard was not a strong student. He had difficulty in reading and spelling words. Some kids used to call him a loser. This made him feel small, so making little things helped him to feel big. The smaller his work got, the bigger he felt. A newspaper reporter said. “Willard has shown the world that he is special.”
