Last year, I went to Los Angeles for a holiday after I won the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing championship. It was a sunny day, with a blue, cloudless sky over a calm sea. I went outside and climbed up onto the roof for a break. I sat and watched people swimming in the sea. But then, as I looked in the distance, I saw a series of three or four big waves heading toward the shore. I'd seen these mini-tsunamis many times before. They were heading at speed towards the swimming area. Most people knew to look out for them, but from the screams that started coming from the beach, I could tell someone was in trouble.
Without thinking, I ran down into the street, grabbing my bodyboard on the way. I shouted at a stranger to call the lifeguard. My neighbor Tom had heard the screaming as well and was also outside with his bodyboard, so together we rushed to the steps that led down to the beach.
When we got down there, we discovered the waves had pulled two boys into the open sea.
I knew that the nearest boat would take at least 30 minutes to reach us. I wasn’t used to this sort of emergency — I'd never been trained as a lifeguard — but I didn't think twice about trying to save them. I suppose in a way I wanted to impress everyone; at 19, a deal like that can seem like a good opportunity to show off.
Tom and I dived into the water. It took us 10 minutes to locate them. When we finally reached them, they were barely able to stay afloat, their heads bobbing up and down in the water. We could tell they were still alive from their small breaths but it was clear they wouldn’t have been able to stay there much longer. Tom and I held the boys and pulled them over our boards.

DRUMMING WITH GRANDPA
Roger was filled with excitement as his mother told him his grandfather was on his way over. He always had fun together with his grandfather who once drummed in a band. They could make the whole house shake with their joyful music. Roger got excited and practiced drumming all morning.
Finally, Dad's car pulled up in front of the house. Upon hearing the car door opened. Roger shouted for joy from his bedroom window, "Hi, Grandpa! Listen to this!” Taking a deep breath, he raised his drumsticks and began rocking and rolling, just like Grandpa had taught him. Jumping up. he raced outside to his grandfather and asked, "Grandpa. what do you think? Are you ready to drum together?" Grandpa, giving Roger a hug, said. "It was wonderful, but I'm afraid I can't play right now.” Dad smiled at Roger, telling him some of Grandpa's finger joints were hurting him and that maybe he would want to play after a short rest. Roger didn't ask again.
After lunch, Roger went to his room to get his skateboard, finding someone had already stepped into the room. It was Grandpa who stood near the drum set. He picked up a drumstick and began to play. Thump! Thump! But just with two thumps, the drumstick fell onto the floor. Grandpa reached for it, trying to pick it up, but the drumstick fell out of his hand. He tried again and the same thing happened. Grandpa moved his red and swollen fingers, looking upset. Seeing this, Roger shut the door noiselessly. He walked to the sitting room where Dad was reading and asked Dad to drive him to his friend's house. "David has a drum with the pedal (踏板)and I'd like to borrow it," Roger told Dad about his plan. Dad got the car keys and off they went.

Brandon went to the pet store with his mom and his brothers, Isaiah and Matt. Isaiah needed food for his rabbit. Matt wanted a toy for his bird.
Brandon looked at a red-and-blue-striped fish while he waited. Air bubbled (冒泡) to the top of the fish tank. Brandon leaned close to the glass. Could he hear the bubbles pop (爆裂)?
“May I have a pet?” Brandon asked.
“You can’t take care of a pet,” Isaiah said. “You’re too little.”
“I’m almost seven,” said Brandon. “I can take care of a pet.”
“You won’t be gentle with a pet,” said Matt. “You’re too little.”
Mom smiled. “It’s hard to keep a pet’s cage neat.”
Brandon stood tall. “I can be neat.”
When they got home, Brandon went to the room he shared with Matt. Brandon’s blocks were on the floor. Toy cars covered the top of his desk. Many books about fish were spread out on his bed. Brandon’s pajamas (睡衣) hung from the back of his chair. “My side of the room is not neat,” Brandon said.
He dropped his blocks into a bin. He parked the cars on his shelf. He put away the books, leaving One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish on the top. Brandon put his pajamas away. He smiled. He could be neat.
The doorbell rang. Brandon heard Uncle Jay say hello to Mom. He heard his baby cousin, Rubie, crying. “Hi, Uncle Jay,” Brandon said. “Why is Rubie crying?”
“She’s hungry, Brandon,” Uncle Jay said.
“Can you get her baby bottle?”
Brandon found the bottle in Rubie’s bag. Uncle Jay put Rubie on a blanket. Brandon sat in front of her. He hid his face with his hands. “Peekaboo (躲猫猫),” Brandon said, lowering his hands. Rubie stopped crying.

I walked into a restaurant and sat down at a table. I picked up a menu, trying to decide what to eat.“Excuse me. Is your name Roger?” asked someone, who touched me on the shoulder. I looked up and turned to the side to see a rather nice looking woman standing before me. “Yes.” I replied, looking rather confused as I had never seen the woman before.
“My name is Barbara and my husband is Tony. He is from George High School.” she said, pointing to a distant table near the door. I looked in the direction but I did not recognize the man who was sitting alone at the table, with a wheelchair (轮椅) around the corner.
“I'm really sorry. The name doesn't ring a bell.”I said.
She turned and walked back to her table. She and her husband immediately began talking and once in a while looked directly at me.
I sat there, thinking hard and tried to remember who this Tony guy was. “I must know him, ”I thought to myself. “He recognizes me for some reason.” I picked up my coffee and took a sip. All of a sudden, it came to me like a flash lightning.
“Tony. THE BULLY (校园霸凌者). The bully of my seventh grade geography class.” I said to myself. I turned around and faced in his direction.
How many times that guy had made fun of my big ears in front of girls? How many times he called me “four-eyed toad”? How many times he pushed me up against the lockers just to make himself look like a big man to all the other students?
He raised his hand and waved at me. I smiled, returned the wave and turned back and began to eat my breakfast.
“Goodness. He's so thin now. Not the big guy that I remembered,” I thought to myself.
All of a sudden I heard the sound of dishes breaking so I turned around to see what had happened.

I was doing some shopping in a toy store and decided to look at Barbie dolls for my nieces. A well-dressed little girl was excitedly looking through the Barbie dolls as well, with a roll of money tight in her little hand. When she came upon a Barbie she liked, she would turn and ask her father if she had enough money to buy it. Her father usually said“Yes”,but she kept asking,“Do I have enough…?
As she watched the Barbie dolls,a little boy came along and started searching the Pokemon toys. He was dressed neatly, but in clothes that were obviously rather worn, and he was wearing a jacket that was too small. He also had money in his hand, but it looked to be five dollars at most. He was with his father as well, and kept picking up the Pokemon video toys. Each time he picked one up and looked at his father, his father shook his head, saying“No”.
The little girl had apparently chosen her Barbie,a beautiful doll. However, she had stopped and was watching the interaction between the little boy and his father. Rather desperately, the boy had given up on the video games and had chosen what looked like a book of stickers instead.
The little girl put her Barbie back on the shelf, and ran over to the Pokemon toys. She excitedly picked up one that was lying on top of the other toys, and raced toward the check-out,after speaking with her father. I picked up my purchases and got in line behind them. Then, much to the little girl’s delight, the little boy and his father got in line as well. After the toy was paid and packed, the little girl handed it back to the cashier and whispered something in her ear. The cashier smiled and put the package under the counter.

On a Sunday morning,Tony woke up to a quiet house. Usually Mom was awake making breakfast and cleaning the kitchen, but not today. At the sound of his mom coughing,Tony knocked on her bedroom door and asked with great concern,“Mom,are you OK?” “Honey,” Mom said weakly. “I have a terrible cold. You can have cereal(燕麦)for breakfast and watch cartoons. I'm going to stay in bed. ”
Tony poured some cereal into a bowl and ate the pieces dry. Mom must feel very bad if she was staying in bed all day. How could Tony help?First,he wiped up the crumbs of cereal he left on the kitchen counter. He also put away the cereal box neatly,so the kitchen looked just as it did when he woke up. But what else could he do?Tony thought. Sunday was the day when mom did laundry. Tony loved to watch the clothes spinning in the machine. That should be fun! He ran to his room to get the laundry basket, inside which there was his mother's favorite white dress, among other clothes and a pair of red socks.
Tony opened the door to the washer and put the clothes inside. He had watched Mom do laundry lots of times,so he knew where to find the washing powder and how to pour it into the machine. Finally,he closed the door and pressed the big button that said “START". Tony looked through the round glass window. Water was pouring in,and the machine was starting to spin, making his clothing tumble around. That was easy!.
Tony watched cartoons until he heard the washing machine beep. That meant the washing was done. Tony opened the door to take out the damp clothes. He took out a few at a time and moved them into the dryer. Everything seemed clean, and Tony felt proud. Then he pulled out a pink dress.

It was in a small town in England at one cold night. An old farmer was driving his horses to the barn (牲口棚) when he heard a voice saying, “Excuse me, sir. May I sleep in your barn tonight?” It was from a young soldier called Jack. Quietly standing there, tired and cold, he was waiting for an answer. But the old farmer said rudely, “No, I don’t want anybody like you to stay in my barn. You had better go away.”
Jack sadly turned away, wondering where he would go next. Suddenly he felt a light tap on his shoulder. It was the young boy who had been working for the old farmer. The boy said, “I know where you can get help. Just go down this road to the first little cabin you come to. There lives Mrs. Smith, who is very kind and is always willing to help those who need it.”
Oh, what warmth filled Jack’s heart, “Thank you very much!” There was at least somebody who cared about him. He quickly reached the cabin and gently knocked on the door. The door opened and the lady inside said, “Good evening. Were you looking for me?”
Jack answered, “Are you Mrs. Smith? I was told that you might offer a place to a homeless poor soldier for a night’s stay.” She said, “Sure! Do come in! You look as though you are nearly frozen.” Mrs Smith shared her simple meal with Jack in the warm room. Then with a thankful heart, he went to sleep on a pile of clean hay Mrs Smith had prepared for him.
The next morning, the kind woman cooked him a warm breakfast. She also gave him a small sum of money to help him travel farther. As he left her house, he thanked her for her kindness, and she prayed for him.

It was Mother's Day and I was shopping at a local supermarket with my son who was five years old, Tennyson. As we were leaving after finishing our shopping, we realized that only minutes earlier an elderly woman had fallen over at the entrance and hit her head on the ground badly. Her husband was with her, but there was blood everywhere and the woman was embarrassed and clearly in shock. Fortunately, a lot of people stopped to help out.
While we were walking towards the scene, Tennyson became very worried about what had happened to the elderly couple. He said to me, “Mom, it's not much fun falling over in front of everyone.” Seeing that there was a flower stall(摊位)at the front of the supermarket, he added, “Why shouldn't we buy the lady a flower? It will make her feel better.” I was amazed that he'd come up with this sweet idea. So we went over and told the flower seller what we wanted. “Just take it,” she replied. “I can't take your money for such a wonderful deed.”
By now medical staff had arrived, and were looking after the injured woman. There we saw the old man was also in great horror, but he tried to comfort his wife and held her hands tightly to encourage her to be strong. We gave the flower to the woman's husband and I told him it was from my son. At that time, the old man started crying and said, “Thank you very much.” He then turned to me, “You have a wonderful son. Happy Mother's Day to you.”
The man bent down and gave his wife the flower, telling her who it was from. Regardless of being badly hurt, the old lady looked up at Tennyson with love in her eyes and gave him a little smile. And my son bent down his body to the injured lady and tenderly said, “Happy Mother's Day to you, too.”

It’s Sunday in Montreal, Canada. There were three kids talking and laughing happily as they took turns riding a scooter(滑板车)on the quiet street. 11-year-old Dale had just jumped off the scooter as his neighbors Zoe, age 7, claimed her turn, and Julie, 9, looked on. Ten minutes later, Zoe sat down on the scooter to catch her breath. That was when a bearded man with a head of messy hair appeared. Without saying a word, the man picked Zoe up off the scooter and calmly stepped away.
The guy held Zoe gently like a baby and just walked down the street. In fact, the calm way the man behaved led Dale to believe that he must be a relative of Zoe’s. But something wasn’t right. “I could see Zoe’s face,” Dale said. “She was afraid.”
As the man walked on, Zoe’s fear transformed into weeps, and then she cried for help. She began kicking and moving, trying to get free of the man’s control. “What are you doing?” Julie shouted But the man, undisturbed, just walked on until he reached an alley(小巷)and disappeared.
Dale was frightened, yet he never thought about the danger to himself. The only thing he wanted to do was to get Zoe back. But what was a 4-foot-tall kid going to do to stop a grown man? “I wanted to help but I couldn’t do it myself,” he thought to himself. “Tell Zoe’s parents, Julie!” He shouted as he started running towards the alley.
Zoe’s parents were relaxing on the sofa in their living room when their front door burst open.

1.Para 1:
We began pushing them back to the shore, but the waves were getting stronger. We had to wait. We eagerly hoping for the arrival of the saving boat. The wild wind blew and the freezing sea water clapped our bodies continuously. 30 minutes seemed much longer as we just helplessly floated on the boundless sea. After a long time, a light spot appeared in the distance! We waved our hands and yelled out for help. The boat finally reached us and took all of us back to the shore. The two children were immediately sent to the nearest hospital.
Para 2:
When we arrived at the hospital, the two kids were in better condition. Picturing what the merry scene would be, relief lay in my heart and happiness etched on my face. The next morning, all the people I met smiled to me and could not stop praising me. It seemed like a good opportunity to show myself off, but I didn’t mean to. In fact, I was ashamed I had thought about it. It occurred to me that helping others was priceless and everyone should be a lifeguard.

All of a sudden I heard the sound of dishes breaking so I turned around to see what had happened. Tony had accidentally hit several plates and knocked them off the table. Tony and his wife looked very embarrassed. They apologized over and over again towards the waitress. They looked so helpless that I got up and went over. I helped his wife pick up the broken dishes from the ground. To my great surprise, I found from the waist down, Tony had no motor ability. His thin legs just hung there, lifeless.
“Could you help me get into the wheelchair?” asked Tony. “No problem,” I said. I reached around his waist and carefully raised him up into the wheelchair. “You remember. While racking his brain for reasons,he caught sight of the red socks, and it suddenly occurred to him that they must be to blame for it. With no means of handling the situation,Tony was in such a panic that he even thought of hiding the dress from his mom. "That isn't a positive approach to the problem,” he reminded himself. Finally,he decided to dry and fold the laundry before telling his mom everything.
Tony nervously knocked at his mom's bedroom door again, with the pink dress in her arms. After what seemed like ages,he came to the bedside, his head drooping. Sensing his son's unease, his mother inquired with concern what was wrong. "Sorry mom,I shouldn't have ruined your favorite dress. ” Tony apologized. Stuttering out the mistake he had made,he was ready to get a good scolding for his wrongdoing. Realizing what was going on,mom smiled understandingly at Tony,"Never mind, dear. I know you meant to help. ” Then mom held the dress up before her and said in an approving tone,"You know what?I think it looks nice. " At this Tony beamed with relief, making a silent vow to be more careful in helping his mom out next time.
