Last year, I went to Los Angeles for a holiday after I won the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing championship. It was a sunny day, with a blue, cloudless sky over a calm sea. I went outside and climbed up onto the roof for a break. I sat and watched people swimming in the sea. But then, as I looked in the distance, I saw a series of three or four big waves heading toward the shore. I'd seen these mini-tsunamis many times before. They were heading at speed towards the swimming area. Most people knew to look out for them, but from the screams that started coming from the beach, I could tell someone was in trouble.
Without thinking, I ran down into the street, grabbing my bodyboard on the way. I shouted at a stranger to call the lifeguard. My neighbor Tom had heard the screaming as well and was also outside with his bodyboard, so together we rushed to the steps that led down to the beach.
When we got down there, we discovered the waves had pulled two boys into the open sea.
I knew that the nearest boat would take at least 30 minutes to reach us. I wasn’t used to this sort of emergency — I'd never been trained as a lifeguard — but I didn't think twice about trying to save them. I suppose in a way I wanted to impress everyone; at 19, a deal like that can seem like a good opportunity to show off.
Tom and I dived into the water. It took us 10 minutes to locate them. When we finally reached them, they were barely able to stay afloat, their heads bobbing up and down in the water. We could tell they were still alive from their small breaths but it was clear they wouldn’t have been able to stay there much longer. Tom and I held the boys and pulled them over our boards.

Jumping up. he raced outside to his grandfather and asked, "Grandpa. what do you think? Are you ready to drum together?" Grandpa, giving Roger a hug, said. "It was wonderful, but I'm afraid I can't play right now.” Dad smiled at Roger, telling him some of Grandpa's finger joints were hurting him and that maybe he would want to play after a short rest. Roger didn't ask again.
After lunch, Roger went to his room to get his skateboard, finding someone had already stepped into the room. It was Grandpa who stood near the drum set. He picked up a drumstick and began to play. Thump! Thump! But just with two thumps, the drumstick fell onto the floor. Grandpa reached for it, trying to pick it up, but the drumstick fell out of his hand. He tried again and the same thing happened. Grandpa moved his red and swollen fingers, looking upset. Seeing this, Roger shut the door noiselessly. He walked to the sitting room where Dad was reading and asked Dad to drive him to his friend's house. "David has a drum with the pedal （踏板）and I'd like to borrow it," Roger told Dad about his plan. Dad got the car keys and off they went.

He dropped his blocks into a bin. He parked the cars on his shelf. He put away the books, leaving One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish on the top. Brandon put his pajamas away. He smiled. He could be neat.
The doorbell rang. Brandon heard Uncle Jay say hello to Mom. He heard his baby cousin, Rubie, crying. “Hi, Uncle Jay,” Brandon said. “Why is Rubie crying?”
“She’s hungry, Brandon,” Uncle Jay said.
“Can you get her baby bottle?”
Brandon found the bottle in Rubie’s bag. Uncle Jay put Rubie on a blanket. Brandon sat in front of her. He hid his face with his hands. “Peekaboo (躲猫猫),” Brandon said, lowering his hands. Rubie stopped crying.
“You’re very gentle,” said Uncle Jay. “Do you want to feed Rubie?” Brandon nodded.
