Francis Bacon’s essays are always a ready antidote (解药). “Prosperity (繁荣) is not without many 9 and dislikes,” Bacon wrote, and“ 10 is not without comforts and hopes.” For me, that comfort and hope often come from a second-hand 11 .

Climbing Taishan in China
It is known that Taishan is a tall mountain. It is 46 to ascend to the top. Walking the whole way can take from three to seven hours and visitors can 47 to take a cable car halfway.

Confucius (孔子) once got to the top of the mountain and declared from the 51 : “Climb Taishan and the whole world looks small.” His 52 express the philosophical idea that the higher you climb, the greater your 53 .
For me, the higher I climbed, the more steps I saw, until 54 I got to the steps leading up to the cable car station. Of course, Confucius wouldn’t have 55 a cable car, but I wasn’t Confucius. I spent two hours climbing steps. That was enough of a 56 experience for me.
In the morning, we got up at 4 a. m. to position ourselves for the 57 . From Jade Emperor Peak, sitting among hundreds of others, we were fortunate enough to see a clear sunrise.
After breakfast, we 58 for about five hours down the mountain and through Peach Blossom Valley, beautiful waterfalls and pools of water.
The green plants up the 59 made for a picturesque climb, and the second-day valley hike was to me the highlight. It was peaceful, allowing me to 60 the greater vision from the top.

About a month ago I noticed something really amazing, which I must call a garden miracle(奇迹). It so happened that when I 61 the double doors of a small storage area in the back of my house where I 62 my garden supplies during the long, severe New England winter, I found, in one of the dirt-filled pots, a living, growing plant, topped with two of the most unlikely pink 63 you’ve ever seen.
How was this 64 ? The unheated space had been closed all winter, and it was still cold outside. Once I caught my breath, I 65 and discovered something approaching a reasonable explanation-there was a small glass window at the top of the double doors, and it was possible that a ray of sun fell directly on that pot, giving the plant just enough light and warmth to 66 it to grow in its own personal greenhouse.
I can’t help feeling 67 at the lessons this wonderful plant has to teach.
For one thing, I am moved by the happenstance(巧合) of the whole thing. If I had 68 my pot six inches to the left or right of that spot, the plant might not have gotten that 69 ray of light. If I had 70 the roots of the plant in late fall, there would have been nothing but dirt in that pot.
But there’s something else that 71 me about this-just how little light and 72 it took for this plant to grow and flower. I’m not 73 we should be mean with love and kindness and all the other warming things we 74 for others and for ourselves. But isn’t it comforting to think that just a drop of 75 can brighten a day, a place, a life?
When it comes to positivity, a little goes a long way. Just ask my little miracle plant.

Lighting flashed through the darkness over Sibson’s bedroom skylight (天窗). Sibson was shaken by a clap of thunder 76 he knew what was happening. The storm had moved directly over his two-story wooden house. Then he heard the smoke alarm beeping.
Sibson rushed down the stairs barefoot to 77 ; he opened the door to the basement (地下室), and flames 78 out. Sibson ran back upstairs to call 911 from his bedroom. “I felt safe because the room had a separate outdoor stairway,” he explains.
But the phone didn’t work, and when he tried to go down the outdoor stairway, he was 79 by a wall of flames. Sibson realized he was trapped.
Sibson’s house was three kilometers 80 the main road and was so well hidden by trees that he knew calling for help would be 81 .
Up a hill nearby lived Sibson’s neighbor, Huggons. He was lying in bed when something like a smoke alarm 82 his ears. He jumped out of bed, took his phone and flashlight, and headed down the hillside toward the 83 . That was when he saw the rolling heavy smoke.
Huggons dialed 911,and the operator warned him not to 84 the house. But Huggons said, “There is no way I am going to listen to Sibson 85 and die in that fire.”
“Anyone, there?” Huggons called out. Then he heard “Help! I’m trapped!” coming from the second-floor balcony (阳台). He entered the house, but soon had to run back to catch his breath.
After one more 86 inside the house, Huggons gave up and 87 around back.
The wind parted the smoke just 88 for him to catch sight of Sibson. But there was no way to get to him. He shone the flashlight into the woods and noticed a ladder. He took it over to the balcony and 89 Sibson down just as the second floor of the house fell off.
Sibson is still 90 when he tells the story. “I was alone that night,” he says. “Then I heard the most beautiful sound in my life. It was Huggons.”

I’m a professor teaching people how to think more creatively. 91 , this lifetime passion was awakened by a casual contest when I was a child.
At a family picnic, children used to have the handkerchief-throwing contest, which I realize now, was not meant to show any real 92 , but simply for laughs. But it stirred my love of thinking outside the 93 .
The host gave each child a cloth handkerchief and told us the winner would be the one who threw it the farthest. The first little throwers 94 mighty strength, but the cloth opened and fell to the ground. So when one kid after another threw harder when the handkerchief always opened, it 95 me. The secret was not to throw harder but to keep the cloth from 96 ! Suppose I hid a rock in the cloth without tying it. The rock would 97 the cloth at least farther than the others, and when they separated, people might not notice a small rock 98 in the grass. I had a good chance of 99 with it, but I didn’t want to win by cheating. I had to make the handkerchief fly like a rock. I began tying the handkerchief around itself to make it 100 . When I approached the 101 as the final contestant, people were already laughing. I took a long wind-up, and the balled handkerchief rocketed off maybe 60 feet away. The laughing 102 suddenly. The host stared at me and then ran to 103 if I’d cheated the crowd. “It’s just the handkerchief,” he declared. The adults applauded and I felt 104 .
This is how I learned the secret to creative thinking. I wanted to continue looking 105 what things seemed to be.
