Last weekend, a couple, Katie and Zack Watson, headed to Birmingham to see Garth Brooks’ concert. They were supposed to attend the show with an old friend, but their friend was in hospital because of his long-term staying up late to work and couldn’t go.
“We have the third ticket. We try to give it away. It is just sitting out there, no takers,” Katie said. They were staying in a Homewood hotel and thought a Uber would be the best way to get to the concert. Their first Uber driver canceled the order, and the clock was ticking. Katie called another Uber driver and hoped for the best. “Your driver is Vicky,” came the message from Uber.
On the way to the stadium, Vicky told the couple about how much she loved Garth Brooks. She was not even from Birmingham but came to drive people in the area. “I guess you’re heading to the Garth Brooks’ concert,” said Vicky. “I love Garth so much-seeing one of his concerts is on my dream list. Someday I might get a chance to see him in person. He has such a beautiful soul.”
Zack and Katie looked at one another and smiled. “Would you like to go to the concert with us?” Katie asked. Vicky’s heart jumped. A country girl from Guin, Alabama, got a chance to see Garth Brooks? “Look, there’s an empty parking spot!” shouted Katie. “Quick, Vicky! Pull in to the space and you can go to the concert with us!”
The three new friends sat together for hours at Protective Stadium-a memory of all three would last forever.
“There’s no doubt that getting to take Vicky to the concert makes me feel good,” Katie said. “It is the least we can do, and we believe it really made Vicky’s night.”
Vicky said she felt exultant, and she was reminded that there are good people in the world. “Zack and Katie are so kind. I still can’t believe I once was inside the stadium,” she said. “I’m just a country girl at heart. A country girl who achieved a dream.”
24. What made the couple’s old friend unable to attend Garth Brooks’ concert?
A. The bad weather. B. His little interest.
C. His illness. D. The busy work.
25. What happened to the third ticket at last?
A. Vicky used it. B. No one took it.
C. It was left in the hotel. D. It was kept for the couple’s old friend.
26. What does the underlined word “exultant” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Confused. B. Excited. C. Stressed. D. Bored
27. What can we learn about Vicky?
A. She is a bus driver. B. She is a fan of Garth Brooks.
C. She was born in Birmingham. D. She is an old friend of the couple’s.
C 25. A 26. B 27. B
根据第一段“They were supposed to attend the show with an old friend, but their friend was in hospital because of his long-term staying up late to work and couldn’t go(他们本来要和一个老朋友一起去看演出,但他们的朋友因为长期熬夜工作住院了,不能去)”可知,这对夫妻的朋友是因为生病了,未能参加 Garth Brooks的音乐会。

薇琪的心怦怦直跳)”和第五段“The three new friends sat together(三个新朋友坐在一起)”可知,最后是Vicky使用了第三张票。故选A。
根据下文“she was reminded that there are good people in the world. “Zack and Katie are so kind. I still can’t believe I once was inside the stadium,”(这提醒她,世界上还有好人。“扎克和凯蒂真是太好了。我仍然不敢相信我曾经在体育场里(看演唱会)”)”可知,能得到好心人送的票去看偶像的演唱会,让Vicky很兴奋,她几乎不敢相信这件事发生在自己身上。因此画线词意为“兴奋的”与Excited 词义接近。故选B。
27题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“I love Garth so much—seeing one of his concerts is on my dream list. Someday I might get a chance to see him in person. He has such a beautiful soul.(我非常喜欢加斯,看他的演唱会是我的梦想之一。也许有一天我能见到他本人。他有如此美丽的灵魂)”推知,Vicky是Garth Brooks的粉丝。故选B。

On the 5-square-metre balcony(阳台) of Zhong Lan’s apartment, there is a mini-farm filled with lemons, tomatoes, eggplants and blueberries. Zhong’s idyllic(田园诗般的)city lifestyle started in 2020 when people were required to work from home due to COVID-19. “I grew garlic(大蒜) for the very first time as I didn’t want to throw it away. It grew roots in just seven or eight days. It opened up a new world to me,” she said. Zhong is not alone. An increasing number of city people have picked up the hobby of growing vegetables on their balconies as working from home has changed many people’s lives in the cities across the country.
In the first quarter of 2022, sales of vegetable seeds on Taobao’s Tmall rose quickly year on year, according to a report released by Taobao, China’s e-commerce platform giant. Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou became the cities with the largest number of seed buyers in China, it added.
Zhong has started sharing her journey on social media this year which has brought her more than 100,000 followers. In a chat group made up of over 100 young balcony green thumbs(园艺高手) across the country, they share the growth of their vegetables every day and discuss what plants are more suitable for balcony planting. “Balcony gardening can slow down the pace of busy city life. We grow the plants we like and look forward to the harvest, and experience the happiness of the idyllic moments,” Zhong said.
Chinese city managers and social organizations are also looking for new methods to rebuild the relationship between city people and nature through vegetable gardens. The government of Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong, started a city vegetable garden project last March, providing seeds and farm tools as well as organizing agricultural experts to provide online Q&A for local people, in an effort to encourage them to get in touch with nature through balcony planting.

The organic (有机的) food market is made up of the sale of organic foods, drinks and related services. These food products do not use a lot of food additives or industrial solvent (溶剂).
Increasing health concerns about the growing number of chemical poisoning cases globally is acting as a driver in the organic food market. People are paying more attention to health because of the harmful effects caused by the presence of chemical pesticides (杀虫剂) in food products.
The chemical pesticides in food products can cause cancer. According to a UN report, around 200,000 people die every year due to bad effects of pesticides in food products. This is causing people to change their focus towards organic food products.
Are organic foods safer? We cannot say yes immediately. Some data show possible health benefits of organic foods. Some studies have shown differences between the organic foods and the traditional ones. But there is little information to prove how these differences can give overall health benefits.
Compared with the traditional foods and drinks, short shelf life of organic foods is controlling the organic food market. For example, a study conducted by a research team shows that the shelf life of organic food products is shorter than traditional products. Similarly, some researchers find that many organic foods have higher levels of bacteria than traditional products, which cause food to go bad. As organic foods don’t have the similar amount of preservative (防腐剂) to that of traditional foods, organic foods are easier to gain bacteria attacks and have a shorter shelf life, which in turn makes it difficult for people to keep them. Thus, people will experience a high risk of buying the bad organic foods.
The organic food market is controlled by authorities such as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) to ensure high-quality standards of food products. Also, the authorities have come up with strict food labeling rules for the organic food market.
32. What makes people prefer organic foods according to the text?
A. The low price. B. The food safety.
C The special taste. D. The unique packaging design.
33. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. The use of organic foods.
B. Ways of making organic foods.
C. An introduction to traditional foods.
D. The disadvantage of organic foods.
34. What’s the author’s attitude towards organic foods?
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Uncaring. D. Objective.
35. Where does this text probably come from?
A. A medical book. B. A health magazine.
C. A cooking guidebook. D. A book review.
B 33. D 34. D 35. B
根据第二段“People are paying more attention to health because of the harmful effects caused by the presence of chemical pesticides (杀虫剂) in food products. (由于食品中化学农药的存在所造成的有害影响,人们越来越重视健康。)”和第三段“The chemical pesticides in food products can cause cancer . . . This is causing people to change their focus towards organic food products. (食品中的化学农药会致癌……这正促使人们改变对有机食品的关注。)”可知,人们更偏爱有机食物是出于对食品安全性的考虑。故选B项。
【33题详解】
主旨大意题。由文章第五段“Compared with the traditional foods and drinks, short shelf life of organic foods is controlling the organic food market.
由文章第四段“Are organic foods safer? We cannot say yes immediately. Some data show possible health benefits of organic foods. Some studies have shown differences between the organic foods and the traditional ones. But there is little information to prove how these differences can give overall health benefits.(有机食品更安全吗?我们不能马上说是。一些数据显示有机食品可能对健康有益。一些研究表明有机食品和传统食品之间存在差异。但是,几乎没有信息证明这些差异如何给整体健康带来好处。)”以及后文可知,本文既讲了有机食品的优点也讲了它的缺点,故作者对有机食品的态度是客观的。故选D项。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。由文章第二段“Increasing health concerns about the growing number of chemical poisoning cases globally is acting as a driver in the organic food market. People are paying more attention to health because of the harmful effects caused by the presence of chemical pesticides (杀虫剂) in food products.(越来越多的全球化学中毒病例引发了人们对健康的担忧,这是有机食品市场的驱动力。由于食品中化学农药的存在所造成的有害影响,人们越来越重视健康。)”以及上下文可知,本文主要介绍了有机食品的优点、缺点以及市场监管方法,故本文可能来自于健康杂志。故选B项。

【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了学习新事物总是好的,尤其是友善。如果你想训练你的大脑表现出来,这里有一些方法可以帮到你。
【36题详解】
上文“It is always good to learn new things, especially kindness.”(学习新事物总是好的,尤其是友善。) 下文“here are some ways for you.”(这里有一些方法给你。) If you want to train your brain to show it(如果你想训练你的大脑表现出来)符合此推断,上下文语意连贯。
该段上文“You might think that the first step should be helping others, but that won’t make a lasting change. If you keep being strict with yourself, that attitude will show how you treat others. If you are always in a bad mood, this feeling will also influence others in your actions.”(你可能认为第一步应该是帮助别人,但这不会带来持久的改变。 Show kindness to yourself first(首先要善待自己)可知,该段主要讲的是要善待自己。 So, to make a lasting change, you must learn to be kind to yourself first.(所以,要想做出持久的改变,你必须先学会善待自己)意思一致,为总结该段内容。
该段下文“If you want to be kind, you need to listen to people. Most of the time, if a stranger on the street asks for some money, you may first think they are trying to cheat. But what if you’re wrong? You’ll never know unless you listen. Therefore, from now on, make an effort to listen actively.”(如果你想变得善良,你需要倾听别人。 Make an effort to listen.(努力去倾听)意思一致,为总结该段内容。故选A项。
上文“One of the best ways to do it is to practise gratitude.”(最好的方法之一就是学会感恩。)下文“always try to see the good in things.”(总是试着看到事物好的一面。) No matter how dark the world might seem(不管世界看起来有多黑暗)符合此推断,起到上下文的承上启下作用,上下文语意连贯。
This saying is true when you want to gain any new skill.(当你想获得任何新技能时,这句话是正确的。)

Recently I got a job. It was exactly what I needed. The only challenge was that child care was really expensive in the UK, So I signed up with a nursery for my baby and paid over £1,300 for just one month. I signed all the necessary documents, among which stated that they had a no refund (退款) policy, so in case you missed some days, the money was not refunded regardless of the reason.
My baby was there for three days and got ill. I was forced to leave work to care for him. I was so worried as I had just started the job, but I had to take a few days off. By Friday he was so sick that he couldn’t eat, drink or walk, and I was terribly anxious. I had tests done only to find out that he had tested positive for COVID-19. We then had to self-isolate (自我隔离) for ten days. As the ten days were coming to an end, I got the virus from him and I tested positive, just as his repeated test results came back negative. So I had to self-isolate with him again for another ten days.
As 20 days had passed, the month was over and it was in December. The rest of the year was holidays and the nursery was not open during the holidays.
Just like that, I had lost £1,300 in three days and I was at home, not working. It meant that I didn’t earn anything either. I was so annoyed at first as it did not seem fair at all, given that my baby had gotten COVID-19 at the nursery. I called Ms Clark, who runs the nursery, and she told me they have a no refund policy which I had signed. I felt so helpless at that moment.
注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右;
My friend advised me to talk with Ms Clark in person.

Knowing my situation, Ms Clark offered me a job in the nursery.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
My friend advised me to talk with Ms Clark in person. I followed the advice. During the conversation, I gave a true account of what had happened in the past 20 days. Hearing my story, she felt sorry for my sufferings and she would think it through. Two days later, I got a call from the nursery, saying that they would give me a refund! I was so excited and patiently waited for the money. My luck didn’t end there.
Knowing my situation, Ms Clark offered me a job in the nursery. My job was to teach the children to draw pictures. Not only did I get £2,000 a month but my baby could attend the nursery for free. I went to Ms Clark’s office and expressed my heart-felt thanks to her. She said that it was not her but myself that I should thank. It hit me that god saves those who save themselves. From then on I worked hard every day, because I valued this hard-earned offer.
