In 2005, Rachel O’ Neill was working full-time as an assistant for an engineering firm. While active and warm-hearted, she had never imagined doing any global volunteering. But after a trip to Malawi in Africa for her fiftieth birthday, she was impressed by the work done by the local girls to support their families. “I wanted a way to honor them,” she says.
An idea hit her one day and she persuaded her friends to make dresses with her and donated them to the girls in Malawi. Rachel hoped that the dresses donated and sent to the girls would build up their confidence and happiness. After all, all the girls are joyful the moment they receive the dresses and even happier while wearing them. Rachel and her friends achieved their goal in the first year. As word spread, donations poured in. In 2008, without previous experience, she started a nonprofit called Little Dresses for Africa, with a mission of getting simple homemade dresses to girls in poor communities. To date, more than 10 million dresses have been donated to the girls in 97 countries, and Africa remains a focus.
Local communities offer to network with the nonprofit to run a distribution(分配)center to distribute these donated dresses. It attracts a number of volunteers, many of whom have ever received the dresses. They make all the dresses themselves, sort out dresses and box dresses for shipments to other countries. Funds are also received to cover transportation costs.
“With a large population of girls under age 14 in Malawi,” Rachel says, “we are nowhere close to meeting all needs. We only ask people to use material of high quality and different colors,” Generous donations have allowed Little Dresses for Africa to address other needs, including building more than 85 wells and two primary schools. “I couldn’t have done any of this on my own, ” Rachel says. “Everyone’s contribution and generosity make a difference.”

Do our musical preferences say something about our personality or how we view relation- ships with others? According to new research, they just may.
In the study, 469 participants listed their favorite songs about falling in love, breaking up, parental love or anything else related to relationships. Then, they filled out questionnaires to define their attachment (依恋) style in relationships — whether they feel confident, anxious and avoidant.
Researchers matched words of these songs with the questionnaires. According to the analysis, participants who see themselves as worthy of love preferred songs with sweet themes, while those who tend to worry liked songs expressing more sad themes, and those who often drop out of social relationships chose songs with avoidant themes.
According to the lead author, Ravin Alaei from the University of Toronto, this is the first study that examines how song words play a role in music preferences. “One reason why people turn to music is that it can embody what they think, feel, and do in relationships and song words especially matter for that,” he said. “People enjoy having their feelings and thoughts spoken back to them.”
To extend their findings, the researchers pulled together 823 most popular songs from 1946 to 2015. After rating how much these songs’ words showed different attachment themes, they compared songs from 1946 to 1965 with those from 1990 to 2015. They found more recent popular songs were more likely to have avoidant attachment words or themes than older popular songs. Alaei believes this can show a trend (趋势) toward more avoidance in relation-ships — Perhaps because people are less connected than they used to be. “We’ve become more individualistic, and we feel lonelier than people used to several decades ago,” he said.
What does this mean? It may mean that we can reflect (沉思) on our interpersonal relationships with people around us when we want to listen to a kind of music over and over again.
8. What will a man who feels anxious in relationships probably prefer?
A. A sweet song. B. An interesting song.
C. An inspiring song. D. A sad song.
9. What does the underlined word “embody” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Explore. B. Copy. C. Guess. D. Express.
10. What can we infer about music preferences from paragraph 5?
A. They are able to change our personalities.
B. They are greatly affected by social media.
C. They suggest a change in interpersonal closeness.
D. They strengthen people’s attitude to relationships.
11. What does the author suggest in the last paragraph?
A Turning to our favorite music for mental comfort.
B. Having a self-reflection through the music we like.
C. Improving our interpersonal relationships by music.
D. Encouraging ourselves to try various music styles.
【答案】8. D 9. D 10. C 11. B

【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线单词上文“this is the first study that examines how song words play a role in music preferences. (这是第一次研究歌词是如何在音乐偏好中起作用的)”和划线单词所在句子““One reason why people turn to music is that it can embody what they think, feel, and do in relationships and song words especially matter for that,”(人们选择音乐的一个原因是,音乐可以embody他们在人际关系中的想法、感受和行为,歌词尤其重要。)”可知,歌词在音乐偏好中起作用,这说明音乐可以表达出人们的想法,感受和行为,由此可知,划线单词“embody”意为“表达”。故选D。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“Alaei believes this can show a trend (趋势)toward more avoidance in relation-ships — Perhaps because people are less connected than they used to be. “We’ve become more individualistic, and we feel lonelier than people used to several decades ago,” he said.(阿莱认为,这可能表明人际关系中出现了更多回避的趋势——也许是因为人们的联系比以前少了。“我们变得更加个人主义,我们感到比几十年前的人们更加孤独,”他说。)”可推知,对音乐的偏好表明人与人之间的亲密关系发生了变化。故选C。
【11题详解】

The world’s major food crops—rice, wheat, corn—must be planted again after every hard vest. That’s a lot of work for farmers and can contribute to environmental problems such as soil erosion(侵蚀). This year, researchers in China showed a new variety—perennial(多年生的)rice, one that would regrow after harvest without the need to replant, can meet needs.
The variety was created years ago by mixing a common type of Thai rice with a wild rice from Africa that can survive extremely difficult environments. However, improving the variety’s production and quality was a challenge and took more than two decades. Finally, in 2018, researchers at Yunnan University and other institutions released Perennial Rice 23(PR23)to farmers in China, hoping to find out how many times the rice can be harvested and measure the production and other benefits. Thanks to the technical help from Yunnan University and government, more and more farmers are growing PR23, and it is even being tested in Africa as well.
PR23 produced just as much grain as regular, seasonally planted rice, the team reported. However, by the fifth year, production dropped much, meaning that the perennial rice needs to be replanted. Farmers could reduce a major task: transplanting young rice seedlings into the fields, helping lower farmers’ costs by half. Soil nutrients(营养物)also increased in the fields containing perennial rice. But researchers still need to develop a new variety to adapt to the drier environments and soil with little nutrients.
Researchers also worry about long-term impacts. One concern is that weeds and some diseases will increase in the fields that are not plowed(犁), requiring more chemicals to kill them than traditional rice does. Another question is whether the rice gives off more greenhouse gas. Despite the facts, its low costs and other benefits of perennial rice should come into focus when the planting spreads.
12. What is the feature of the perennial rice?
A. It doesn’t need replanting after every harvest. B. It can damage the soil for a long time.
C. It takes a long period of time to grow. D. It doesn’t require harvesting in time.
13. Why did researchers release PR23 to farmers in China in 2018?
A. To mix it with a Thai rice. B. To spread it to Africa.
C. To announce their success. D. To test its quality.
14. What is the disadvantage of PR23 compared to traditional rice?
A. It has less production. B. It takes in more nutrients.
C. It is harder to survive dry weather. D. It is weaker in fighting with diseases.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Perennial Rice Promises Easier Farming
B. Perennial Rice Needs More Water Supply
C. Scientists Need More Knowledge About Crops
D. Scientists Want Farmers to Help Them with Crops
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. C 15. A

【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“But researchers still need to develop a new variety to adapt to the drier environments and soil with little nutrients.( 但研究人员仍需要开发一种新品种,以适应干燥的环境和几乎没有营养的土壤)”可知,与传统大米相比,PR23的缺点是在干燥的天气里生存比较困难,故选C项。
【15题详解】

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Everyone can help their community in their little way, just like David did.
The young barber likes to give back to his community by providing free haircuts to residents in his community and sharing nice conversations with them.
But it was different when it was time for Lucy’s haircut. The young barber remembered Lucy a young lady living beside community park, and how he watched her work day after day when he was younger. At the back of his mind, David always knew he would do something for this hardworking lady someday.
Armed with a chair and his haircutting tools, David set up a sidewalk shop and gave a free haircut to his neighbourhood.
While Lucy came to have a haircut, she shared how it had been hard for her and her family. She lost loved ones. Lucy was ill herself, and being sick meant not being able to work for almost two months.
To help Lucy and other residents in the neighbourhood, David gave Lucy $100 in cash and set up a GoFundMe account.
Lucy truly appreciated the behaviour and still got emotional whenever she recalled that memorable free haircut and cash gift. It warmed her heart to know that a young man like David listened to what she had to say and lent her a hand.
But this was not where the heartwarming story between David and Lucy ended. Ever since that summer, David realized that he still had more surprises to give the neighbourhood, particularly to Lucy.
David had noticed that Lucy was hiding her smile whenever they talked. She didn’t dare to smile widely because of her teeth, which, according to her, were kind of ugly.
Lucy shared how often she would get comments from her customers about her teeth. One time, a young customer just lost his tooth, and Lucy joked that both of them didn’t have teeth.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
However, David decided to change that.

Lucy had never seen a dentist (牙医) before.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】参考范文:
However, David decided to change that. Although he regularly showed up in the neighbourhood to provide free haircuts to the neighbourhood, David had also been busy arranging for Lucy to receive a new set of teeth. He reached out to a dentist, Dr. Sofia Rodriguez, who felt it a must to help after learning about Lucy’s past and current situation. David drove Lucy to her dental appointment and made sure that his friend wouldn’t pay for anything to get her much-needed false teeth.
Lucy had never seen a dentist (牙医) before. So it was important for David to accompany his friend to her appointment at a clinic where they spoke Spanish so Lucy would be comfortable. Now, Lucy feels more confident and doesn’t hesitate to give everyone her new winning smile, which she is still getting used to. David understands the importance of gratitude, and he’s so grateful to the people that have been supporting him in this little project to give back to the community.
