A fisherman in Kansas threw a line in the water and caught a prehistoric fish that dates back nearly 100 million years.
Danny Smith landed the fish, a 4-foot, 6-inch alligator gar (鳄雀鳝), weighing 39.5 pounds. Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) officials confirmed the identification and are looking into how the fish, called a “living fossil”, got into the water in southeast Kansas.
Kansas is home to three native types of garfish, the most common being longnose gar, which can be as large as 5 feet long, along with shortnose and spotted gar, the department says.
Smith knew he had got something big when he was fishing last month. “I thought I had caught a normal big fish,” he said. “But it fought and fought, and pretty soon it came out of the water. The shape of its head really blew my mind.”
Soon the fish doubled back and came to the edge of Smith’s boat and he pulled it in. But once the big fish was in the boat, “it almost destroyed the boat,” Smith said. “The fish was flopping and flipping (翻来翻去). There was one little fish in the boat wanting to get out of it just as bad as I did because the bigger fish was tearing things up, ” he said. “It also had sharp teeth in its mouth.”
“It’s the first time an alligator gar has been caught in Kansas and was likely released from an aquarium,” state officials said. “It’s not unlikely this fish was once somebody’s pet or purchased from a pet store, and simply released into the river once it became too large,” the department’s Fisheries Division director Doug Nygren said. Smith said the state wildlife officials are coming to do an experiment on the fish’s head to determine its age and perhaps where it came from.
    4. What did KDWP find out about the fish?
    A. It was native to Kansas.
    B. It was a long existing creature.
    C. It was a common longnose gar.
    D. It was larger than other types of garfish.
    5. How did Smith react when he first saw the fish?
    A. He was completely confused. B. He got a little disappointed.
    C. He was scared to death. D. He was really shocked.
    6. What do we know about the fish after it was pulled into the boat?
    A. It reacted violently. B. It seemed very hungry.
    C. It attacked the fisherman. D. It became weak pretty soon.
    7. What is implied about the fish in the last paragraph?
    A. Why it was released is clear. B. It was kept as a pet by a fish lover.
    C. How it got there remains unknown. D. It was purchased by a wildlife official.
B 5. D 6. A 7. C

Madagascar, the world’s second-largest island country located off Africa’s eastern coast, is an island of diverse ecosystems and a biodiversity hotspot. The country has unique wildlife, with 90% of its plants and animals found nowhere else. Madagascar’s wildlife creates some of the country’s most beautiful scenery and popular spots. One of its conspicuous landscapes, attracting tourists from almost all corners of the Earth, is the Avenue of the Baobabs in the Menabe region. This avenue is made up of numerous baobab trees along the dirt road linking Belon’i Tsiribihina and Morondava, creating a unique and beautiful setting.
Baobab trees are common throughout Madagascar. Of the Earth’s eight species, six are native to the country. Some of the baobabs in the country are about 2, 800 years old, with trunks rising to 150 feet. The avenue is a row of about 25 baobabs stretching about 260 meters. Other baobab trees are also found in the nearby pastures (牧草地). This road is one of Madagascar’s most visited places. It is also the most accessible place to see some of Africa’s oldest baobabs. These trees were once part of a forest that was made up of other plants. However, massive deforestation cleared the area of most trees, leaving the baobabs to grow alone.
The baobab trees along the road and the other species growing in the nearby areas are always under constant threat from the increasing population. The trees also face threats from polluted water from the nearby fields, forest fires, and bushfires. Despite being a popular tourist attraction, the Avenue of the Baobabs has no admission fee or visitor center and generates little money for local communities.
Thankfully, non-governmental organizations in partnership with the government have noticed the area and developed activities to protect the avenue. The Ministry of Environment, Ecology, and Forests declared it a temporary protected area in July 2007. In July 2015, the site was declared a national monument (国家保护区), the first in Madagascar. The government and local communities hope the trees can survive for additional 800 years.
    8. What does the underlined word “conspicuous” in the first paragraph mean?
    A. New. B. Cultural. C. Striking. D. Changing.
    9. What do we know about the Avenue of the Baobabs?
    A. It is a big forest. B. It has eight baobab species.
    C. It consists of many different plants. D. It has Africa’s oldest baobabs.
    10. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
    A. The risk to local baobab trees.
    B. Natural disasters in Madagascar.
    C. Poor living conditions in Madagascar.
    D. The quality customer service of the avenue.
    11. What kind of feeling is expressed in the last paragraph?
    A. Curiosity. B. Caution. C. Hopefulness. D. Sympathy.
C 9. D 10. A 11. C

根据最后一段“Thankfully, non-governmental organizations in partnership with the government have noticed the area and developed activities to protect the avenue. Hearing a sound in his tea farm, Tenzing Bodosa awoke. Looking out, he saw a herd of wild elephants in the moonlight. For many tea farmers in India, seeing wild elephants in the crops is cause for alarm. However, for Bodosa, who employs more than 70 workers at two farms in the state of Assam, it meant everything was working as planned.
He calls it the “world’s first elephant-friendly tea farm”. Consumers pay more for this tea, which comes from farms that protect elephant habitats, reduce fences and ditches (沟渠) to ease their movement and safely get rid of chemicals.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists Asian elephants as an endangered species. About 40, 000 to 50, 000 elephants remain in the wild. That is a drop of more than 50 percent in the last 75 years. India is home to about 28, 000 wild elephants. Many reasons have led to the decrease. One reason for the decreasing population is connected to tea farms. India is the second-largest tea grower, after China, and Assam leads tea production. Assam has a population of 5, 719 wild elephants, the most after the state of Karnataka. Elephants regard tea farms as parts of their forest habitat, as they have been part of their migratory routes over centuries.
“In India, meetings between humans and wild elephants often end badly for both,” said Bodosa. “I decided that there had to be a way for us to coexist peacefully.” Bodosa has been growing tea naturally since 2007, when he was one of the few farmers to start using natural products.
To make his farms elephant-friendly, he created an area for elephants, planting elephant grass, elephant apples and star fruit. He provided them with easy passage by making sure there were no ditches or fences. Other animals visit his tea gardens too. Many human visitors come to his farms, and some stay in a tree house that he has built, and volunteer. Bodosa has also trained as many as 70,000 farmers in organic farming. “We have to work hard to secure the lives of both wild elephants and humans,” Bodosa said.
12 What does Bodosa make efforts to do on his farms?
    A. Put elephants to work. B. Grow tea in a natural way.
    C. Provide free food for visitors. D. Protect himself from animals’ attack.
    13. What can be inferred from the numbers mentioned in paragraph 3?
    A. Wild Asian elephants are in danger.
    B. India is the world’s largest tea producer.
    C. Assam is home to most of India’s elephants.
    D. Tea farms are the main reason for elephants’ decrease.
    14. What do we know about Bodosa’s farm?
    A. It makes a lot of money.
    B. It has become a famous hotel.
    C. It is influential and beneficial.
    D. It raises many different kinds of animals.
    15. What would be the best title for the text?
    A. Assam elephants: an alarming life
    B. Farmers live in peace with elephants
    C. Tea gardens: a balanced diet for elephants
    D. Farmers return to traditional farming methods
B 13. A 14. C 15. B
根据第二段“He calls it the “world’s first elephant-friendly tea farm”. Consumers pay more for this tea, which comes from farms that protect elephant habitats, reduce fences and ditches (沟渠) to ease their movement and safely get rid of chemicals.(他称之为“世界上第一个对大象友好的茶园”。消费者花更多的钱购买这种茶叶,这种茶叶来自保护大象栖息地的农场,减少围栏和沟渠,以减轻它们的活动,并安全地去除化学物质。)”和第三段中“Bodosa has been growing tea naturally since 2007, when he was one of the few farmers to start using natural products(Bodosa自2007年开始自然种植茶叶,当时他是少数几个开始使用天然产品的农民之一。)”
根据第三段中“The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists Asian elephants as an endangered species. About 40, 000 to 50, 000 elephants remain in the wild. That is a drop of more than 50 percent in the last 75 years.(国际自然保护联盟将亚洲象列为濒危物种。大约有40000到50000头大象仍然生活在野外。在过去的75年里,这个数字下降了50% 以上。)”可推知,野生亚洲象处于危险之中。故选A。
根据最后一段中“Many human visitors come to his farms, and some stay in a tree house that he has built, and volunteer. Bodosa has also trained as many as 70,000 farmers in organic farming. “We have to work hard to secure the lives of both wild elephants and humans,” Bodosa said.(许多人类访客来到他的农场,有些人住在他建造的树屋里,做志愿者。Bodosa还培训了多达70000名农民进行有机农业。“我们必须努力工作,确保野生大象和人类的生命安全,”Bodosa说。)”可推知,Bodosa的农场是有影响力和有益的。故选C。

    【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“However, for Bodosa, who employs more than 70 workers at two farms in the state of Assam, it meant everything was working as planned.(然而,对于在阿萨姆邦的两个农场雇佣了70多名工人的Bodosa来说,这意味着一切都在按计划进行。)”和第二段中“He calls it the “world’s first elephant-friendly tea farm”.(他称之为“世界上第一个对大象友好的茶园”。)”和最后一段中“Many human visitors come to his farms, and some stay in a tree house that he has built, and volunteer. Bodosa has also trained as many as 70,000 farmers in organic farming. “We have to work hard to secure the lives of both wild elephants and humans,” Bodosa said.(许多人类访客来到他的农场,有些人住在他建造的树屋里,做志愿者。

故填to。
In the last eight years可知用现在完成时,主语是research,助动词应用has。故填has discovered。
分析句子结构可知,此处是固定短语:as a result of意为“由于…的结果”。故填a。
故填which。
故填to protect。

Last summer vacation, I decided to visit my best friend in Barcelona. Aline sent me a screenshot (屏幕截图) of the ticket she was about to buy for me, from Saturday to Wednesday. I approved of the selection, she bought it, and I packed. The next day I headed to the airport, a little later than planned.
When I got to the airport with only my carry-on bag, it was 35 minutes before the gate closed. I headed directly to the security checkpoint. The electronic machine marked a big fat red × and told me to see an airline official. I did what I was told to do and stood in line at the airline counter (柜台), while one of the only two ladies available left. My heart was racing as I kept looking at the clock. A man, loud and rude, arrived with an airport employee and cut ahead, shouting at the lady and taking 10 minutes of my precious time.
By the time I arrived at the counter it was 8:02 and the gate closed at 8:05. The lady asked me what was wrong, and I told her. She then scanned (扫描) my ticket and told me the problem was that the gate had closed. I complained and told her I had arrived earlier.
    “Where were you then?”
    “In line, waiting for you.”
She didn’t say anything else, except to help change my ticket. I didn’t panic; instead I went into action mode. I searched for other flights. Just one flight would leave in 35 minutes. I was already at the airport, so I bought the ticket. I then tried to check in: check-in closes 40 minutes before the flight.
I took a deep breath, stopped running around, grabbed a taxi home, and bought my third ticket from Sunday to Sunday, extending my stay.
    注意:
    1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
I called Aline and we had a laugh about me missing the first flight in my life.
    ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
In fact I did not miss my flight, but instead arrived a whole week early.
    ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I called Aline and we had a laugh about me missing the first flight in my life. I have always been a super responsible perfectionist. I’d flown more than 100 times in the past year, and during most of the flights I traveled by myself. I had never missed a flight. Never. But I also know I need a good amount of travel humor to keep my nerves under control. After three tickets, I finally arrived at Barcelona and had an amazing time there with Aline. But what happened next was totally unexpected to me.
In fact I did not miss my flight, but instead arrived a whole week early. I realized this fact when I got an email on Friday reminding me of checking in for my flight the next morning. Laughing so hard, I handed over the phone with my ticket on it to Aline so that she could check the date. After laughing for ten minutes straight, I immediately called my family to tell them about this funny travel story. Sometimes, we should just laugh at those unlucky travel accidents and be flexible during travel.
