Just six months after the birth of my first daughter, I faced the most difficult decision any mother has to make.
As my husband wasn't able to adjust his schedule to allow employment of a parttime babysitter, I was given the choice of finding another fulltime nanny or quitting my job as a writer and producer at a major Chicago radio station. All of a sudden I was facing the kind of lifechanging decision that Robert Frost wrote about in “The Road Not Taken”. And like the character in Frost's poem, I ended up choosing “the road less traveled” for a woman in the 1970s. In the dawn of the women's liberation movement, women who stayed home to raise children were viewed as intellectually and socially inferior.
Even men saw working women as superior. When I told my boss at the radio station that I was quitting to stay home with a baby, he didn't believe I was serious. It took a while to convince (使信服) him that I wasn't seeking a better assignment.
The loss of income turned out to be the least of my troubles. Since I was no longer a working journalist, I had become a nobody in the truest sense of the word. That fact was driven home to me while attending a bureau meeting in Washington. I was talking with the Los Angeles bureau chief at a party when she suddenly asked me for what publication I worked. I told her I was home raising a child and with that she turned and walked away, leaving me so stunned that my mouth dropped open.
I came away from that incident realizing I had to develop an entirely new persona (角色)—that of helicopter mom! Even though being a stayathome mother placed me in the minority for my generation, I discovered other women on the same path.
24.What kind of challenge did the author face after her daughter's birth?
A.She was inexperienced in taking care of a baby.
B.Her husband didn't want to take on a parttime babysitter.
C.A fulltime nanny was difficult to find at that time.
D.She had to stop working to look after her daughter.
25.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Robert Frost offered the author valuable advice.
B.Working women are regarded as superior in the United States.
C.The author was greatly troubled by the loss of income.
D.The author was fond of writing poems.
26.What did her boss think when the author told him she was quitting her job?
A.The author would stay home raising her child.
B.The author was not telling the truth.
C.The author meant what she said.
D.The author wanted to be superior.
27.After the talk with the Los Angeles bureau chief, the author ____________.
A.regretted having left her work position
B.realized only work can bring happiness
C.decided to go back to work immediately
D.continued to stay at home raising her baby
C
Anyone who passes regularly through busy public spaces knows that one victim of our obsession (痴迷) with digital devices such as smartphones has been small talk. With our eyes focused on our smartphones, fewer of us make conversation with strangers. But are we missing something in this loss of relaxing small talk?
A growing body of research suggests that small talk has surprising benefits. In a study published in 2014 in the PersonalityandSocialPsychologyBulletin, researchers found that daily interactions with casual acquaintances (泛泛之交) can contribute to daytoday wellbeing. Participants were asked to record their daily interactions with people connected to them by “strong ties” (family and friends) and “weak ties” (acquaintances). On days when participants had more “weaktie” interactions than usual, they reported a greater sense of belonging and happiness.
In a study published in the JournalofExperimentalPsychology in 2014, another group of researchers looked at interactions among strangers. They invited 118 commuters (通勤者) at a Chicagoarea railway station and gave them three choices: to start a conversation on the train, to avoid any conversation and enjoy the loneliness or to do whatever they normally do on their commute. In surveys completed afterwards, those who were instructed to make conversation with strangers reported “notably more positive” commuters than those who rode in loneliness.
“Talking with a stranger may not offer the same benefits as talking with a close friend, but we underestimate (低估) its importance to us,” says the study's coauthor, Nicholas Epley, a professor of behavioural science at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Dr Epley traded his own smartphone for an old featureless phone, which has made him, he says, more open to “wonderful, short conversation with strangers”.
People overestimte the social risks involved in small talk, adds Dr Epley, “Most people not only want to talk to you, but they'll tell you secret things they may not even tell a family member.”
28.The first study got the findings from the participants by comparing their ____________.
A.strongand weaktie interactions
B.casual and close acquaintances
C.private and public interactions
D.family members and friends
29.What did the study done on the train find out?
A.People like to ride in loneliness on the train.
B.Few commuters like to chat with strangers.
C.There are three kinds of train commuters.
D.Chats with strangers bring joy to people.
30.Which of the following would Dr Epley probably agree with?
A.It is nicer to talk with strangers than friends.
B.Smartphones may kill small talk with strangers.
C.People fail to realize the importance of friendship.
D.Most strangers prefer to spend time on their phones.
31.What does the text mainly discuss?
A.The interactions with strangers. B.The loss of relaxing small talk.
C.The influence of smartphones. D.The important role of small talk.

That annoying kid brother or sister who broke your stuff and got you in trouble all the time may have actually done you a favour: A new study suggests that younger siblings (弟弟妹妹) might be good for your health.
Children who didn't welcome a baby brother or sister into the family before first grade had almost three times the likelihood of obesity (肥胖) compared with kids who experienced the birth of a sibling when they were around 3 to 4 years old, the study found.
“It is possibly because when there is a younger sibling in the family, a child might become more active—example, running around more with their younger sibling,” said Julie Lumeng, a public health researcher at the University of Michigan.
“Maybe families are more likely to take the kids to the park when there is a younger sibling, or maybe the children are less likely to sit, watching TV, when there is a younger sibling to ask them to join more active pretend play,” she added.
Mealtimes might also be different with a second kid at the table. Parents of only child can often focus too much on what their kid eats and which can lead to bad eating habits, some previous research suggests.
“When parents use restrictive or pressuretoeat feeding practices, children have an increased risk of being overweight,” said Jeriea Berge, a researcher at the University of Minnesota.
“When a new child is introduced, parents may relax their focus on the older child's eating behaviours, making it possible for the older child to selfregulate their eating,” said Berge. “This selfregulation may lead to a healthier weight for the child with a sibling.”
For their study, Lumeng and her colleagues followed 697 US children from birth through age 6.
However, the authors acknowledged that their study lacked objectively measured birth weights and information on events such as a divorce, a move or a job loss in the family—all of which can influence the odds (可能性) of children becoming obese.
32.Compared to children with younger siblings, an only child may ____________.
A.become selfish B.become overweight
C.have a healthier lifestyle D.get better parental guidance
33.How may children change when they have a younger sibling?
A.They may refuse to play at home.
B.They may feel annoyed and unhappy.
C.They may have more physical activities.
D.They may spend more time with their parents.
34.For parents, which of the following may be good for their children's health?
A.Allowing kids to control their eating.
B.Using some restrictive feeding practices.
C.Paying more attention to kids' eating habits.
D.Letting the older child regulate the diet of the younger child.
35.What was the limitation of the study?
A.It was based on other researchers' studies.
B.It used an oldfashioned research method.
C.It did research only on dozens of families.
D.It failed to include other aspects influencing children's health.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Marina was extremely afraid of the dark. When the lights went out, everything and every shadow appeared to her as the most terrible monsters. Her parents explained to her every day with great patience that these things were not monsters. Marina understood her parents, but she could not stop feeling an awful fear whenever it was dark.
One day her aunt Valerie came to visit. Valerie was an incredible woman. She was famous for her courage, and had been to many journeys of adventure, some of which had been made into books and movies. Marina wanted to conquer her fear of the dark, so she asked her aunt how she became so brave, and whether she had ever been frightened.
“A great many times, Marina,” answered her aunt. “I remember when I was small and I was terribly afraid of the dark. I couldn't stay in the dark for even a moment.”
Marina became very excited. How was it possible that someone so courageous could have been afraid of the dark?
“I'll tell you a secret, Marina. It was some blind children who taught me how to be brave. They can't see, so if they had never discovered the secret of how not to be afraid of the dark, they would have been forever frightened.”
“It's true!” said Marina, intrigued. “Can you tell me that secret? ”
“Of course! The secret is to change your eyes. Since blind children can't see, their hands are their eyes. All what you have to do to conquer your fear is what they do. Close the eyes of your face and open the eyes of your hands. Let's make a deal: tonight, when you go to bed and put out the light, if anything makes you afraid, close your eyes, carefully get out of bed, and try to see what it is that's making you scared. But do it using your hands as eyes...and tomorrow tell me how you're getting on with the fear.”

How many of you drink Coca-Cola? Nearly everybody. Did you know that cola started out not as a soft drink, but as a cure for headache back in the late eighteen hundreds?
John S. Pamberton, a doctor from Atlanta had experimented for many months to find a cure for the common headache. He worked at his home mixing and heating oils with other materials until he found one mixture that seemed to have good effect on headache.
He began to sell the mixture in drugstores. The customers had to mix it with water before drinking.
Then, how did cola change from a drug to a soft drink? That came about quite by accident. One day a patient who was suffering from headache came into a drugstore. He asked for a bottle of cola. He wanted to take it right away,so he asked the clerk to mix the medicine while he waited. It so happened there was no boiled water at the store. The clerk suggested mixing the drug with soda water. The customer agreed. After drinking it, the customer said it tasted wonderful. The clerk continued offering the mixture, and cola gradually became popular.
Text 10
People used to say “Behind every successful man there is a woman.”
Some women still like making their husbands and sons successful. But some women want more for themselves. They want good jobs. When they work, they want to be paid equally as men.
Today the best jobs are still given to men. Even when women do the same work, they are often paid less than men. Women want these things changed.
The women's liberation movement was started by women who didn't want to stand behind successful men. They wanted to stand beside men, with the same chance for success. The movement is quite new, and many American women do not agree with its purpose. But it has already made several changes in women's lives, and men's lives, too.
