A 23yearold woman has achieved an unbelievable thing that many of us dream of—visiting every country on Earth.
Lexie Alford was born into a family of travel agents, which gave her the opportunity to tour places such as Cambodia, Dubai and Egypt during her childhood, according to Forbes magazine. She began saving up at age 12 to fund her goal of visiting all countries. By her 18th birthday, she had travelled to 72 nations. In October 2016 she realized she could see the remaining nations on her list in time to set official record. Many people follow her travels on social media platform Instagram and she decided to chase the world record partly to inspire others. “Honestly, in the beginning, I simply wanted to push the limits of what I thought I could do with my life and see as much of the world as possible in the process,” she told Forbes. “It wasn't until things started getting really challenging that I realized I was inspiring people around me, especially young women.”
“I also loved visiting Northern Pakistan, the natural beauty of the mountains and kindness of the locals was astonishing,” Lexie Alford said. “The most pleasant surprise about travelling to all these misunderstood areas of the world was that the countries for which I had least expectations ended up being the most amazing.”
“My advice for young people is to believe that you can do anything you set your mind to do. If you want to travel, you have to prioritize(优先处理)it over other aspects of your life.”
21.Why was Ms. Alford able to tour lots of places when she was a child?
A.Because social media platform supported her.
B.Because she had the courage to accept challenges.
C.Because her family background gives her an advantage.
D.Because some travel agents helped her.
22.What amazed her most about the travel?
A.Traveling to the misunderstood places.
B.The natural beauty of the mountains.
C.The kindness of the local people.
D.The unexpected wonderful experiences in some countries.
23.Which of the following can best express her advice for young people?
A.Rome was not built in a day.
B.Where there is a will, there is a way.
C.Where there is life, there is hope.
D.Don't put off till tomorrow what can be done today.

A British family was on holiday in a rented motor home in the USA. Traveling through California, they visited the Magic MountainAmusement Park. In the midafternoon, halfway through what was turning out to be a most enjoyable day at the park, the family came upon a particularly steep ride. In the line, the ride attendants (服务员) strongly warned everyone about the risks of losing hats, glasses, coins and keys, etc., and these warnings were repeated by large signs around the ride. During the ride, their keys' fate was just as the warnings repeated.
However, the fact was that there were no spare keys. One park attendant drove the family back to the motor home, suggesting the least damaging ways to break into it. Fortunately, a window had been left slightly open, enabling the middle son to be put in and to open the doors from the inside. What was even more fortunate was that the attendant made the engine fire without the key.
The next day the father called a local locksmith (锁匠) to see what could be done. “I might be able to make new keys from the locks if you bring the vehicle to me.” said the locksmith. So the family drove to the locksmith, whose business was in a small shopping centre in the countryside. The locksmith looked at the motor home, and said he would try. In fact, the job took the locksmith most of the day and he put away all his present work. The family hung around the locksmith's, visited the shops again, and generally spent a day at the little shopping centre.
In the late afternoon the locksmith said that he had nearly done. When the father entered the locksmith's shop, the locksmith was smiling. He put two new shining keys on the counter. Although the day was not included in their plan, the family really appreciated all the help and kindness they received from the people.
24.What happened to the family in the amusement park?
A.One of the kids fell from the ride. B.They were hit by a warning sign.
C.Their rented vehicle broke down. D.They encountered the loss of keys.
25.What did the park attendant do for the family?
A.He started the vehicle. B.He found a spare key.
C.He opened the car door. D.He contacted a locksmith.
26.What can we know from Paragraph 3?
A.It was difficult to make the new keys. B.The locksmith had a large workplace.
C.The family was refused by the locksmith. D.The family had a happy day in the city.
27.What did the family think of the people they met?
A.Respectful. B.Humorous. C.Hardworking. D.Warmhearted.

I first came to Berwickshire for a job—to be the Ranger for the Berwickshire Marine Reserve. I was then Senior Ranger for St Abb's Head National Nature Reserve and I set up my own business, In Our Nature, offering wildlife journeys, walks, talks and courses in 2020. There's so much I love about Berwickshire. Its stunning scenery. Its variety of landscapes and habitats and range of amazing wildlife, both above and below the water. Its friendly people. In places you can feel like you are a million miles from anywhere, when in reality you're just an hour's drive from Edinburgh.
The thing that supports everything on the Berwickshire Coast is its varied and fascinating geology (地质). Thejewelinthecrown is Siccar Point. With its worldfamous nonconformity (均变), it's considered the birthplace of modern geology. The geology not only shapes the landscape, but it also impacts on the wildlife, forming varied habitats from steep sheltered valleys and towering cliffs to sheltered sandy bays.
There's nothing I like more than being out in nature and sharing my passion with others, so starting up In Our Nature was a no brainer. In the warmer months I offer tours on land and sea to help folk enjoy the amazing wildlife and scenery of the Berwickshire Coast. In the darker months my online courses help people learn about wildlife in the hope that it will increase their enjoyment of the marine and coastal environments they spend time in.
My favourite spot on the Berwickshire Coast has got to be a place called Petticowick. The views up the coast and inland to the Mire Loch are second to none. It's a place where you can marvel at geology which covers unimaginable periods of time. You can listen to and watch thousands of seabirds that return to the cliffs to breed each spring. Or witness all the amazing activity of the breeding seal colony on the beach below during the early winter.
28.Why did the author go to Berwickshire?
A.To do sightseeing. B.To make friends.
C.To work in a reserve. D.To study wildlife.
29.What do the underlined words “The jewel in the crown” mean?
A.The highest part. B.The most attractive part.
C.The valueless part. D.The advanced part.
30.How does the author help people get to know wildlife in darker months?
A.By providing online courses. B.By sharing his experiences.
C.By offering tours on land. D.By organizing trips to the sea.
31.What can we learn from the text?
A.Modern geology needs further study.
B.Petticowick should be well preserved.
C.People should not take advantage of nature.
D.The author is enthusiastic about Berwickshire.
D
We know the famous ones—the Thomas Edisons and the Alexander Graham Bells—but what about the less famous inventors? What about the people who invented the traffic light and the windshield wiper (雨刮器)? Shouldn't we know who they are?
Joan McLean thinks so. In fact, McLean, a professor of physics at Mountain University in Range, feels so strongly about this matter that she's developed a course on the topic. In addition to learning “who” invented “what”, however, McLean also likes her students to learn the answers to the “why” and “how” questions.According to McLean, “When students learn the answers to these questions, they are better prepared to recognize opportunities for inventing and more motivated to give inventing a try.”
Her students agree. One young man with a patent for an unbreakable umbrella is walking proof of McLean's statement. “If I had not heard the story of the windshield wiper's invention,” said Tommy Lee, a senior physics major, “I would never have dreamed of turning my bad experience during a rainstorm into something so constructive.” Lee is currently negotiating to sell his patent to an umbrella producer.
So, just what is the story behind the windshield wiper? Well, Mary Anderson came up with the idea in 1902 after a visit to New York City. The day was cold and stormy, but Anderson still wanted to see the sights, so she jumped aboard a streetcar. Noticing that the driver was struggling to see through the snow covering the windshield, she found herself wondering why there couldn't be a builtin device for cleaning the window. Still wondering about this when she returned home to Birmingham, Alabama, Anderson started drafting out solutions. One of her ideas, a lever (操作杆) on the inside of a vehicle that would control an arm on the outside, became the first windshield wiper.
Today we benefit from countless inventions and innovations. It's hard to imagine driving without Garrett A. Morgan's traffic light. It's equally impossible to picture a world without Katherine J. Blodgett's innovation that makes glass invisible. Can you picture life without clear windows and eyeglasses?
32.By mentioning “traffic light” and “windshield wiper”, the author indicates that countless inventions are ________.
A.beneficial, because their inventors are famous
B.beneficial, though their inventors are less famous
C.not useful, because their inventors are less famous
D.not useful, though their inventors are famous
33.What does professor Joan McLean's course aim?
A.To add colour and variety to students' campus life.
B.To inform students of the windshield wiper's invention.
C.To carry out the requirements by Mountain University.
D.To prepare students for their own inventions.
34.Tommy Lee's invention of the unbreakable umbrella was ________.
A.not eventually accepted by the umbrella producer
B.inspired by the story behind the windshield wiper
C.due to his experience of being caught in a snowstorm
D.not related to Professor Joan McLean's lectures
35.Which of the following can best serve as the title of this passage?
A.How to Help Students to Sell Their Inventions to Producers?
B.How to Design a Builtin Device for Cleaning the Window?
C.Shouldn't We Know Who Invented the Windshield Wiper?
D.Shouldn't We Develop Invention Courses in Universities?

A Change of Heart
It was a cold December and things were tough for my family. Mum had a hard time raising us kids on her own in our small community of New Westminster as dad passed away five years earlier. We relied on social assistance.
Looking back, I realize what Mum went through sending us kids to school. Every morning she would place a new piece of cardboard in our shoes because our soles (鞋底) were worn out. When we got home, Mum would have French toast ready for us. Constant moving was typical for my family in those days, and it didn't look like we'd be in our current house much longer. Rent was $25 a month, but Mum couldn't pay it, and we knew we would be forced to leave right after Christmas on the first of January.
The holidays were fast approaching, and we were entitled to $25 for Christmas from social services. Mum said that instead of buying food, she was going to use the money to pay our rent. That way we'd have a roof over our heads for a little while longer. Then she told us that there would be no Christmas gifts.
Unknown to Mum, I had been selling Christmas trees, shoveling (铲) snow and doing odd jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of boots. I knew exactly which boots I wanted. They were teninch, TopGenuine, Pierre Paris boots, and they cost $23.
The big day for getting my boots came on Christmas Eve afternoon. I was very excited as I hurried up the road to catch the bus into town. It was only a halfmile walk, but on the way I noticed a house with Christmas lights and decorations. It was then I realized that at our house, we had no lights, no decorations and no turkey or ham for Christmas dinner.

W: Come with me. I'm heading in the direction where you can catch the bus you want. We'll just continue down Gold Road here for a few minutes.
M: OK, great. Thank you.

M: And that's where the bookstore is?
W: No, transfer there to the L6 going north. The end of the line for L6 is just across the street from Riverside Bookstore. The whole ride shouldn't take you more than 40 minutes.
M: Thanks. I'm glad you set me straight. Is that my bus coming down the street now?
W: Yes, it is. I hope you have exact change. The driver doesn't give change to passengers.
M: I have quite a few coins with me. Thanks again! Goodbye.
Text 10
A jellyfish is a soft creature that swims slowly through water. They don't have bones, brains, eyes, ears, and hearts like true fish. However, jellyfish do well without these body parts. They live in every ocean in the world. There are hundreds of kinds of jellyfish. The number of jellyfish keeps increasing.
Jellyfish also need oxygen to live. Their skin is so thin that oxygen can pass through it and enter their bodies. If you ever see a jellyfish, look at it carefully. You can even see its stomach through the skin.
All animals must protect themselves against danger. And when a jellyfish touches an animal or person, it gives off poison. If you go swimming in the ocean, watch out for jellyfish, get out of the water if you see them. If you see a jellyfish on the sand, don't pick it up.
Sometimes, hundreds of jellyfish appear at once. These large groups are called “swarms” or “blooms”. Recently a “swarm” of jellyfish covered one end of the Gulf of Mexico.
Why are there more jellyfish now than in the past? There are two possible reasons.First, adult fish and jellyfish eat much of the same food. In some places, too many adult fish have been caught by humans. This leaves more food for jellyfish. Second, farmers use fertilizer on their fields. When it rains, some fertilizer gets washed into rivers. It flows into the oceans. There, more plants grow and the oxygen in the water is reduced in the water. Jellyfish can live on less oxygen than fish.

参考范文:
DearMark,
How is everything going? We have planned to discuss the lowcarbon life around us on Saturday, but I am afraid I couldn't make it.
I was severely injured in a soccer game last night. The doctor examined me carefully and told me that I had to stay in bed for at least one week. I asked him whether there was any possibility that I could recover faster, yet the answer was negative. My condition doesn't allow me to go anywhere until my legs are fully recovered.
It is a pity for me to miss this chance that I have been longing for. Shall we put it off until next weekend if my condition permits? Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
LiHua

参考范文:
AsIcontinuedwalking, Ibegantofeelastrangesenseofguilt. Here I was going to buy a new pair of boots, while Mum was probably home in tears, thinking of ways to explain why there were no presents. How was I supposed to be happy if everyone else in the family was not? Thinking of this, the idea of buying the beautiful boots I had wanted for so long didn't seem as fascinating as before. As I arrived at the bus stop, the driver opened the door, waiting for me to get on. I stood there for what seemed like a century, until eventually the driver asked, “Son, are you getting on this bus or not?” I finally burst out without hesitation, “No, thanks, sir. I've changed my mind.”
Thebusdroveoffwithoutme, andIbreathedasighofrelief. Feeling as if a weight had been lifted off my shoulders, I knew what I had to do next. Across the street from the bus stop was a big grocery store. Into the store I went, brimming with happiness and excitement. I bought a turkey, ham, oranges and all the Christmas decorations. I spent every coin of my hardearned money. Once I arrived home with all those purchases, I knocked on the door. I could hardly wait to see my mother's face! When Mum opened the door, some of the groceries fell inside onto the floor, and she just stood there, too stunned to speak. Holding back the tears, I exclaimed, “Merry Christmas, Mother! There really is a Santa Claus!” To see my mother's prayers answered more than made up for the boots I never got. It was a Merry Christmas for us after all!
