Hwever, Central Califrnia's kelp ecsystems have dne smewhat better than thse in Nrthern Califrnia. A new study led by Jshua Smith, an eclgist at the University f Califrnia, examines the rle sea tter (海獭) ppulatin—a natural predatr fr urchins—play in preserving existing kelp frests in the Mnterey Bay.
The research prject spanned three years, during which intensive underwater surveys prduced sme very interesting data abut sea tter behavir. Sea tters have very high metablisms (新陈代谢) that keep them warm in icy waters and which als make them greedy cnsumers f shellfish, urchin, and fishsea tters can eat 25 percent f their bdy weight in fd in a day. At the bserved sites, as the urchin ppulatin grew, the tter's diet shifted t becme mre heavily dependent n urchins. In fact, the tters were eating three times as many urchins as they had been befre 2014. As a result, they prvided crucial prtectin frm urchins t the kelp frests.
The fact that tters were able t cntribute t the health f the surviving kelp frests by keeping urchin ppulatin in check prvides Smith with hpe fr the frests' cntinued survival. “The imprtant thing is that the urchins are ultimately reduced,” he says. “The sea tters have maintained patches f kelp frest that can then help refill the barren areas t enhance the recvery f frests.”
