Kwane Stewart stepped outside a convenience store and spotted a homeless man with a small dog sitting in the lap. Stewart, a vet at an animal shelter, noticed its scratchedoff furs—signs of an allergic reaction to fleas (跳蚤). He approached the man and offered to bring flea medications for the dog's skin, a gift the man readily accepted. “I remember returning a week later, and the hair was coming back, the red spots on its skin were gone,” Stewart told the Modesto Bee. The man said his dog was no longer staying up scratching and was sleeping well. “‘And you know,' he said, ‘I’m sleeping at night.' He started to cry, and that got me choked up too,” Stewart said. Stewart was hooked. “When you give back, there is something you get in return that feels much larger. I knew I wanted to keep doing it,” he told medium. com.
Today, Stewart, 50, has his own practice in town, yet he still finds time for street pets. He's helped roughly 400 animals since 2011, mostly dogs but also a few cats.
There's a strong need for his kind of help. About 25 percent of Modesto's homeless population own a pet, but there are few healthcare options available to them. To fill that void,__Stewart, using his free time, wanders dark alleyways and underpasses, anywhere he thinks the homeless might be camped out. He carries his medical bag, which contains treatments—vaccines, antibiotics, flea medications, and more. Stewart pays for almost all of it out of his own pocket.
For those expensive procedures, he set up a GoFundMe account to provide enough money for treatment. “I don't ever want to have to turn anybody away,” he explains.
He knows there are some people who question whether the homeless should even have pets. How can they care for them on the street? Stewart told the Bee, “I think that more than anybody, they need a pet. They love their pets probably more than the average person.”
24.What did Stewart do for the homeless man's dog?
A.He brought some medicine to it. B.He sent a unique gift to it.
C. He cured its allergy to dust. D. He scratched it to help it sleep well.
25.What does the underlined word “void” mean in Paragraph 3?
A.Time. B.Gap. C.Desire. D.Choice.
26.Why does Stewart set up GoFundMe for sick dogs?
A.To give free medical treatment. B.To offer a comfortable shelter.
C.To pay the cost of healthcare. D.To provide care and adoption.
27.Which of the following is a suitable title of the text?
A.The Homeless Dogs B.Go Fund Me C.Animal Shelters D.A Street Vet
C
Many students are no doubt stressed about meeting all the demands coming their way. Researchers present a simple way—thinking vividly about future success—that might help students at risk of falling behind academically to work harder.
In the study, college students from a range of economic backgrounds were randomly asked to think about their future or their past. In the future condition, the students were asked to imagine and write about themselves as successful college graduates. Those in the past condition were asked to think about themselves before they began making plans for college, their family's money and status, and how that influenced the way others thought of them.
After this exercise, the researchers assessed the students' behaviour through a studentteacher conversation as well as their effort on a challenging set of GRE (Graduate Record Examination) questions. Female students from poor backgrounds tended to carry themselves with greater confidence in the studentteacher conversation if they had gone through the futurethinking condition, the researchers found. They also attempted a greater number of GRE questions, on average, in the futurefocused condition.
That the apparent benefits were observed among lessadvantaged female students, but not relatively wealthy students or male students, is in keeping with researchers' thinking: These students may tend to deal with academic challenges less easily than their classmates. “This research shows that they can draw from vivid and motivating visions of their own futures to help support their motivation and persistence during challenging and uncomfortable tasks.” says Mesmin Destin, the study's lead author.
Dale H. Schunk, a professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, acknowledges that the results are “the same as what current motivation theories predicted about the energising role of goals”. However, he notes that the study does not directly explore the mechanism (机制) by which a vision of future identity might lead to positive academic outcomes. “Also, the results might differ if a student's vision of a future identity does not agree with his or her actual interests,” Schunk adds.
28.What did the researchers do to the students in the study?
A.They divided them into two groups evenly.
B.They asked them to predict their GRE scores.
C.They classified them according to their economic backgrounds.
D.They observed their conversations with teachers.
29.What does the underlined word “lessadvantaged” in the fourth paragraph mean?
A.Severely disabled. B.Mentally challenged.
C.Financially challenged. D.Greatly stressed.
30.What does Dale H. Schunk think of the results of the study?
A.They are supported by related theories. B.They challenge traditional beliefs.
C.They are of little practical significance. D.They might transform current education.
31.What is the best title for the text?
A.Imagining the Future Reminds Students of Their Backgrounds
B.Imagining the Future Brings in Economic Success
C.Imagining the Future Helps Students Set Clear Goals
D.Imagining the Future Helps Students Handle Academic Challenges
D
Forget smart phones and smart glasses. One day, we might have smart tattoos (纹身). The company NewDealDesign came up with an idea for a product called UnderSkin. The device would look like a pair of tattoos on your palm and the side of your thumb, but it would actually be a very thin computer implanted just below your skin. It would draw power from your body's energy, and you could use it to unlock doors, monitor your health, exchange and store information, or even express your personality. UnderSkin is just an idea-you can't go out and get one—but the technology exists to make it work. “We assume it is about five years from being real,” says designer Gadi Amit.
Writer and technology entrepreneurs Amal Graffstra already has a chip called a radiofrequency identification (RFID) tag (标签) implanted in his hand. “I use it to log into my computer. I also use it to share contact details with people,” he says. The chip is about the size of a grain of rice and responds to radio signals with a unique identification number.
If a computerized tattoo or embedded tag isn't crazy enough for you, what about a brain chip? The company Intel is working on technology that would let you control your devices with your mind. Dean Pomerleau, one of the researchers, explains, “We're trying to prove you can do interesting things with brain waves... Imagine being able to surf the Web with the power of your thoughts.”
Do you think embedded chips sound cool or__creepy? Some doctors are concerned about people hurting themselves while getting devices implanted. They argue that medical procedures are meant to heal sick people and not to give healthy people special powers. Others worry about hacking and privacy—could someone hack in and steal your identity, or even control your mind? On a more philosophical level if you have a computer inside your body, are you still human? Or are you a cyborg (半机械人)? What do you think—would you want a computer under your skin?
32.What can we learn about Underskin according to the passage?
A.It is a pair of tattoos on your palm. B.It may come into being in five years.
C.It is able to respond to radio signals. D.It can be charged through a computer.
33.Amal Graffstra is mentioned in Paragraph 2 to show ________
A.there exists the technology to produce Underskin.
B.Amal Graffstra can have access to advanced products.
C.the RFID tag is quite useful for people in life.
D.people tend to share contact details with people.
34.What does the underlined word “creepy” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Amazing B. Attractive C.Horrible D.Useless
35.What's the author's attitude towards the implanted computer?
A.Positive B. Negative C.Objective D. Indifferent

An Act of Neighborliness
The skies were dark. A strong wind was blowing hard, cutting my face like a sharp knife. Rain fell in big drops and thunder and lightning flashed across the skies. I shook with cold and fear as I walked home, through the streams of muddy water. Some people were rushing by, completely wet in the heavy rain.
Along the way, I saw some schoolchildren holding their heavy schoolbags tightly and rushing home, I also saw that some road repair work had been abandoned by workers. Obviously, the workers had left in a hurry because of the storm. There were few signs and it was hard to see what was on the road. There were pieces of wood and metal and it looked like a hole had been dug and hurriedly covered with boards.
I moved on but suddenly stopped as I heard some sounds. It sounded like children crying. I quickly turned back and went back to the place from where the sounds came. I was frightened! To my sadness, I found that two small children had fallen into the hole on the road. The boards had moved away with the force of the rushing water. I could hardly see the children as it was dark all around me. I told them that I was going to look for help. I knew the neighbors well, and they all shared a sense of neighborliness, willing to give a hand.

Withscienceandtechnologyusedineveryaspectoflifeatthattime, our life in the future will be quite different from what it is now.
At that time we'll live in a greener and more beautiful world with trees, birds, blue skies and sunshine. And we'll be able to arrange things like meals, bathing and sleep with our smart phones. Robots will be able to do most of the housework for us. As for work, we'll mostly work at home, communicating ideas for work online. If necessary, we'll have video meetings with our partners around the world. During our free time, we'll be able to travel to places of interest in new vehicles like flying cars. We'll even enjoy space trips to the moon and other planets.
