    四、阅读理解

    A

No artist has affected modern art more than Picasso. The thousands of masterpieces he had created changed the way people thought about art.Picasso was perhaps the most talented and successful artist who ever lived.

Picasso was born in 1881 in a small town on the southern coast of Spain. His father was a painter who taught art.Picasso showed exceptional talent at an early age and,by the time he was in his teens, painted better than his father or any of the local art teachers. At sixteen,Picasso was sent to the Royal Academy of Madrid, where students drew from plaster casts and copied works of the old masters.Picasso felt these assignments were pointless and began to work on his own.Picasso’s father soon became angry with his son’s rebellious behaviour, long hair, and strange clothes. He believed that Picasso was wasting his talent and scolded him,Why don’t you cut your hair and paint sensibly?

In 1900,Picasso left for Paristhen the center of the art world. He lived in a cold,run-down building, painting constantly, sometimes surviving for days on only a piece of bread.During these years, his art reflected his dismal(凄凉的) surroundings.Homeless outcasts were the subject of many of his fairly realistic early paintings. After seeing African masks and sculptures, his works became more simplified and angular(有角的) leading up to the revolutionary new style known as Cubism.

Picasso didn’t sell many of his works during these early years. On May 8,1995,Picasso’s AngelFernanadezdeSoto was sold at auction for $29 million. The next day BluePeriod, one of his later works, sold for $5 million. But he worked continuously, always experimenting with different styles of painting.Though Picasso lived to be ninety-two and became the most famous artist in the world,he spoke of his youthful days in Paris as the happiest time of my life”.

    1.This passage mainly discusses .

She is widely seen as proof that good looks can last forever. But,at nearly 500 years of age, time is catching up with the MonaLisa.

The health of the famous picture, painted by Leonardo da Vinci in 1505,is getting worse by the year, according to the Louvre Museum where it is housed.

The thin, wooden panel on which the MonaLisa is painted in oil has changed shape since experts checked it, the museum said.Visitors have noticed the changes but repairing the world’s most famous painting is not easy.Experts are not sure about the materials the Italian artist used and their current chemical state.

Nearly 6 million people go to see the MonaLisa every year, many attracted by the mystery of her smile.“It is very interesting that when you’re not looking at her,she seems to be smiling, and then you look at her and she stops, said Professor Margaret Livingstone of Harvard University.“It’s because direct vision (视觉) is excellent at picking up details, but less suited to looking at shadows.Da Vinci painted the smile in shadows.”

However, the actual history of the MonaLisa is just as mysterious as the smile.Da Vinci himself loved it so much that he always carried it with him, until it was eventually sold to the king of France,Francis ,in 1519.

In 1911,the painting was stolen from the Louvre by a former employee, who took it out of the museum hidden under his coat.He said he planned to return it to Italy. The painting was sent back to France two years later.During World War ,French hid the painting in small towns to keep it out of the hands of German forces.

4.The underlined sentence in the first paragraph means the MonaLisa .

B.is being damaged after so many years

C.is getting more valuable with years passing

    D.will rot away

5.Choose the right order about the happenings onto the MonaLisa.

a.It was stolen from the Louvre.

b.Its painter sold it to King Francis .

c.Its state of health was checked.

d.It was returned to France and housed in the Louvre Museum.

e.It was hidden and protected against German forces.

    C.d-a-e-c-b D.b-c-a-d-e

    答案:A

    解析:细节理解题。由倒数第二段可知,a发生于1911年,d发生于1913年,e发生于第二次世界大战期间;由倒数第三段末句可知,b发生于1519年;由第三段首句可知,c发生于近几年。

6.What makes her smile so mysterious according to Professor Livingstone?

A.The materials the Italian artist used.

    B.The way she smiles.

C.The way Leonardo da Vinci painted the smile.

D.It plays a trick upon the human eye.
