The American actor Bruce Willis has been diagnosed with frontotempora1 dementia (痴呆), “a cruel disease”, his family said in a statement posted on Thursday to the website of the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration (AFTD). Last year, Willis was originally diagnosed with aphasia, a comprehension and communication disorder. His family said at the time that he was “stepping away” from his acting career as a result. “Since we announced Bruce’s diagnosis of aphasia in spring 2022, Bruce’s condition has progressed and we now have a more specific diagnosis: frontotemporal dementia (known as FTD),” continued the statement. “Challenges with communication” are one of the symptoms Willis faces with FTD, which is the most common form of dementia in people under 60-with most FTD cases occurring between the ages of 45 and 64, according to the AFTD. The disease is likely more common than statistics suggest, as it is lesser known and can take years to receive a formal diagnosis.
FTD is a degenerative (变性的,退化的) brain disorder. Symptoms may include uncharacteristic personality changes and unexplained struggles with decision-making, speaking or language comprehension are among the most common presenting symptoms.
While there is currently neither a cure nor treatments available for the condition, the Willis family writes that they hope to help change this.
“As Bruce’s condition advances, we hope that any media attention can be focused on shining a light on this disease that needs far more awareness and research,” his family said, adding that Willis has always believed in using his voice to raise awareness and help others, both in and out of the public eye.
“Bruce has always found joy in life—and has helped everyone he knows to do the same,” the statement concluded. “Your continued compassion, understanding, and respect will enable us to help Bruce live as full a life as possible.”

TAMPA, Fla,—At USF, 21-year-old Alexander Mercier of Odessa, majored in mathematics and microbiology, which leads him to start important research that may make him the school’s first Rhodes Scholar.
“I would say I am stubborn,” explained Mercier, who could hear as early as Saturday if he gets the honor. He says the honor is due to more than just brains. Instead, it was determination that made him an accomplished pianist. He says his biggest natural talent was drawing and he also has a love of art. But it was math that attracted him and he wouldn’t let go. He was studying how math may help control the spread of diseases.
“I would sleep on the couch next to the computer,” he said. “I saw a gap in epidemiological (流行病学的) research in the study of how diseases spread. I didn’t know at the time that it would become one of the most important topics in the world.”
While his work is timely and important, there’s lots of competition. Eleven other finalists from this region of the country are also vying for the honor. They attend schools like MIT, Stanford and the University of Chicago.
Mercier owes it to his school that he can have as good a chance as any of the others and he feels that USF has prepared him well. If he doesn’t win the honor and get to study expense-free at Oxford, he says he’ll have many options. “I will continue to do the work that I enjoy and that I think will benefit people,” he said.
Some are surprised that USF hasn’t had a previous Rhodes Scholar. However, many schools haven’t had one. Only 32 are selected each year from across the nation. USF has only been in existence since 1956. By contrast, the first classes at Oxford were held in 1096.
8. Why did Mercier choose to major in mathematics and microbiology?
A. He saw its bright future. B. He has a passion for math.
C. He wants to win the honor. D. He is talented in this field.
9. Which expression can best replace the underlined phrase “vying for”?
A. Hunting for. B. Applying for.
C. Allowing for. D. Competing for.
10. What can we infer about Mercier?
A. He will study art at Oxford. B. He tries to become a pianist.
C. He is grateful to his school. D. He studies how diseases exist.
11. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. A senior could be USF’s first Rhodes Scholar.
B. 32 students are selected for Rhodes Scholar.
C. Math may help control the spread of diseases.
D. A senior found the most vital topics in the world.
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. C 11. A

Scientists at Purdue University created the world’s whitest paint — a discovery that not only adds yet another choice to the“which white should we paint this wall” dilemma, but also might help the climate crisis.
The paint was developed by Purdue mechanical engineering professor Xiulin Ruan and his team. It works through a passive cooling technology that offers great promises to reduce space cooling cost and global warming. “When we started this project seven years ago we had saving energy and fighting climate change in mind,”Ruan said in a podeast (播客) episode of This Is Purdue. They wanted to create a paint that would reflect sunlight away from a building, dramatically decreasing the need for air conditioning.
Heating, cooling, and lighting account for 28 percent of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions. And overusing air conditioning can overwhelm a city’s power grid and cause blackouts (停电). In a Queens blackout in 2006,175,000 people were left without power, which lead to 40 deaths. This paint could effectively be an alternative to air conditioners in some places.
The paint reflects 98.1%of solar radiation while also giving out infrared (红外线的) heat. Because the paint takes in less heat from the sun than it gives out, a surface coated with this paint is cooled below the surrounding temperature without using power. Covering a roof area of 1,000 square feet with the paint could create 10 kilowatts ofcooling power, the researchers found.“That’s more powerful than the air conditioners used by most houses,”Ruan told This Is Purdue.
You can’t buy the paint just yet, but researchers are partnering with a company to put the paint on the market. While individual action to fight elimate change can help save our planet, it’s important to note that the vast majority of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions can be traced back to 100companies. Maybe we can douse(浇) those companies with this white paint, too — it could be worth a shot.
12. What is known about the paint?
A. It has different colors. B. It doesn’t cost much.
C. It uses heating technology. D. It is climate-friendly.
13. What is the Queens blackout mentioned to show?
A. The poor management of power. B. The significance of the paint.
C. The importance of air conditioning. D. The result of global warming.
14. Which aspect of the paint is talked about in Paragraph 4?
A. Its application. B. Its function.
C. Its composition. D. Its disadvantage.
15. What can be learned from the last paragraph?
A. The quality of the paint needs improving.
B. The paint will bring profits to the 100 companies.
C. Researchers want to see the paint in commercial use.
D. Individual efforts matter in creating the whitest paint.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. B 15. C

【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“The paint reflects 98.1%of solar radiation while also giving out infrared (红外线的) heat. Because the paint takes in less heat from the sun than it gives out, a surface coated with this paint is cooled below the surrounding temperature without using power. Covering a roof area of 1,000 square feet with the paint could create 10 kilowatts ofcooling power, the researchers found. “That’s more powerful than the air conditioners used by most houses,”Ruan told This Is Purdue.”(这种涂料能反射98.1%的太阳辐射,同时还能发出红外线。
