During my first year of high school, I was a skinny(干瘦的) boy who weighed just 55 kg. I dreamed of being a football star. I played a little bit, but spent most of my time on the bench. Over the summer, I found a special diet that bodybuilders use to bulk up. Drinking a lot of whole milk and lifting weights every day added an extra 11 kg of muscle (肌肉).
By the time football season started, I felt ready. I was soon disappointed, though, when I saw that I was still smaller and slower than most of the other boys. I found myself on the bench again.
That was to change during one of our first games of the season. We had built up a lead (领先)and the coach felt secure(放心的) enough to send me in for while to play halfback (前卫). I was so excited.
On the very first play, I met with challenges. When the quarterback(四分卫) handed the ball off to me, I thought it was my time to show off. However, I was soon hit by three of the other team's players. They tackled(擒抱并摔倒) me hard to the ground. I got up and walked off the field, back to the bench.
Over the years, I can't remember how many times I have dreamed of achieving something, only to find that the world had other plans. I hated this for a long time. It was not until I became a football commentator(评论员) that I finally realized that maybe the world's plans for me are better than my own.
34. What does the underlined phrase “bulk up”mean?
A. Go on a diet. B. Lose weight. C. Increase muscle. D. Keep one's balance.

C. is not good at making plans D. has never succeeded at anything

①Is there a connection between music and language? According to recent studies, the answer is yes:Music improves certain language abiliti es in the brain. Here, we look at two examples.
②A recent study by researcher Nina Kraus shows that playing a musical instrument can improve a person's hearing ability. In his study, two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room. The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians were able to hear the talking person more clearly.
③Musicians hear better because they learn to pay attention to certain sounds. Think about violinists in an orchestra(交响乐团). When the violinists play with the group, they hear their own instrument and many others, too. But the violinists must listen closely to what they are playing, and ignore(忽略) the other sounds. In this way, musicians are able to concentrate on (专注于) certain sounds, even in a room with lots of noise.
④Schlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with stroke(中风) patients. Because of their illness, these people cannot say their names, addresses, or other information normally. However, they can still sing. Dr. Schlaug was surprised to find that singing words helped his patients to speak. Why does this work? Schlaug isn't sure. Music seems to make different parts of the brain work, and even the damaged(损坏的) parts. This might help patients to use that part of the brain again.
⑤Music improves concentration(注意力), memory, listening skills, and our overall language abilities. It can even help sick people get better. Playing an instrument or singing can help us do better in school and keep our brain sharp (敏锐的) as we get older. Music, she adds, is not only enjoyable, it's also good for us in many other ways.
37. What is true about both Kraus and Schlaug?
A. They are both medical doctors.
B. They both work at Harvard Medical School.
C. They both play an instrument in an orchestra.
D. They are both interested in how music and the brain are connected.
38. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
39. This article is probably from the part of ▲ in a magazine.
A. science B. education C. sports D. culture
D
When Matty Sallin, 34, was working on a degree in art and technology at New York University,he got interesting homework in electronics class. He decided to create an alarm clock(闹钟).
“i verybody has to deal with these every day, and they are really unpleasant!”he says. He asked different people what they would like to be waken up instead of a noisy alarm. A lot of them said,“The smell of bacon(培根肉)”.
So Sallin and two classmates invented a new kind of alarm clock: a wooden box with a pi g face and a digital clock that uses the smell of cooking bacon instead of the sound to wake someone up.He explains, “There’s no danger of burning, because I built it carefully. It uses halogen light bulbs(卤素灯) instead of a fire for cooking and turns off automatically after ten minutes. Yes, the clock itself can do it. Just a few easy steps are needed to set the alarm.”
“What you do is to put some frozen bacon in the night before and set the alarm,”says Sallin.
“If you set the alarm for 8:00, it will turn on at 7:50 and slow cook for ten minutes under the halogen bulbs,” he says. Then the bulbs turn off and a fan blows the smell out through the nose of the pig.
“So instead of an alarm, ▲ ,”says Sallin.“Then you can open the door on the side and pull the bacon out and eat it.”
When Sallin was a kid, he spent a lot of time making drawing of inventions.“I wanted to make an lift in my backyard and a special tree house,”he says.“But I never really thought I'd be called an inventor!”
Sallin got an A in the class and went on to other things——but people continue to hear about his invention and email him every day asking where they can buy his alarm clock.
40. From Paragraph 2, we can learn that ▲ .
A. everyone likes bacon for their breakfast
B. Sallin's classmates are tired of the homework
C. people feel noisy about the common alarm clock
D. not everyone needs the alarm clock in the morning
41. Which of the following happens first?
A. Blowing the smell out. B. Putting some frozen bacon.
C. Cooking the bacon for ten minutes. D. Setting the alarm clock.
42. Which of the following is the best to fill in the blank in Paragraph 6?
A. you eat the bacon B. you turn off the bulbs
C. you blow the fans D. you get a bacon smell awake
43. The best title for this passage can be ▲ .

卷 Ⅱ
说明:本卷共四大题,满分39分。
四、任务型阅读(每小题1分,共4分)
请认真阅读下列短文,根据所读内容完成下列结构图,每空限填一词。
Did you have any interesting dreams last night?
Our dreams come from a part of the brain that contains our thoughts and memories. A person can have up to six dreams a night, and each dream usually lasts from 10 to 40 minutes. Everyone dreams, but not everyone remembers their dreams. Most people dream in color, usually with sound. And we usually dream about ourselves and the people we know.
Why Do We Dream?
Alan Siege l is a scientist who studies dreams.“Dreams help us get in touch with our deeper feelings,” he says.“They can tell us a lot about ourselves, and can help us figure out problems.”Another scientist, Robert Stickgold, thinks dreams come from our memories. He believes we dream to remember, because memories are useful to the brain. Stickgold says the purpose of dreaming through these memories is to help us learn from the past.
Here are a few types of dreams and what people think they mean.
Dream 1: You Meet Someone While in Your Pajamas(睡衣)
Sometimes people dream that they meet someone they know while wearing their underwear(or nothing at all!). This dream may be the result of an embarrassing event in your life. Some people think we dream about embarrassing situations if our brains are trying to deal with an event in our own lives.
Dream 2:You're Flying
If you dream about flying, you are probably quite happy. This is a good period in your life. You may feel that other people see you as a leader.
Dream 3:You Didn't Study for a Test
This probably means you are worried about an important event coming in your life. If you're not prepared for the event, your dream may be telling you, “It's time to get to work!”

As it is shown in the picture, some well-dressed men had a big dinner in a restaurant, but much food was left and some was even untouched at all. When the waitress asked them to pack the leftover food, they felt very surprised and refused to do so.
It is a pity that many people act like the the men in the picture. In my opinion, we should pack the leftovers when we have meals outside. As we all know, saving is a fine tradition for our Chinese people and therefore we shouldn’t waste a bit food. Also, there is not enough food in the world and there are many people starving. In addition, we students should develop the habit of saving food and give away some to the people in need. Finally, we have the responsibility to help people around us realize the importance of saving.
Only in this way can we build up an economized society and live a happy and healthy life.
