The internet and video game technology (技术) are coming together thanks to virtual reality(VR, 虚拟现实) technology. Screens show this virtual world to our eyes while speakers bring it to our ears. However, it can be more immersive (沉浸的). To do this, it should use more of our senses. 別时about our hands, mouths and noses?
Technology companies are working on it!
Scent (气味) is a difficult thing to recreate, according to the Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech). Recently, researchers at the school created a screen that can spread different scents to a user. They programmed a computer to mix seven “typical” oils, including lemon and lavender (熏衣草). By mixing them, they can copy real smells.
Tokyo Tech said there will soon be scent libraries, full recipes (配方). Takamichi Nakamoto, who led the research, said movie theaters and video games could use this technology to make smells and become “extremely enjoyable”. Advertisements for food and makeup may also use it to attract customers.
What about our sense of touch? Technologies that create a sense of touch are already common. For example, our phones vibrate (震动) as we type. After our fingertips, our mouths are the most sensitive part of our bodies. So, researchers at Carnegie Melon University, US, made VR glasses. They can “shoot” super high-pitched sound waves (高频率的声波) at your lips, teeth and tongue.
In a demo video, we can watch spiders crawl (爬) into the mouth of a game player. She feels them! Another demo shows someone using a virtual toothbrush. Maybe soon, we will be able to give our families a virtual kiss!
49. Technology companies give users a more immersive experience by ________.
A. making louder sounds B. using more of our senses
C. making larger virtual worlds D. putting videos on bigger screens
50. What do we know about the technology of creating scents?
A. There’s no company working on it.
B. People now can create seven different scents.
C. It is easier to make scents than making sounds.
D. Researchers can now use computers to copy real smells.
51. Which of the following uses your nose?
A. A virtual toothbrush.
B. The vibration of phones.
C. Smells during an advertisement for food.
D. Super high-pitched sound waves shot at someone’s lips.
52. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The most important senses. B. The wonderful scent libraries in Tokyo
C. Video games of the future. D. Technologies for more immersive environment

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people under lockdown (禁闭) feel lonely and bored. “There is a loneliness epidemic,” said John Dattilo from Pennsylvania State University, US.
So he, together with an international team of researchers (研究者), studied how to reduce loneliness and increase (增强) positive feelings during the pandemic.
According to their new study, reduced loneliness has something to do with doing enjoyable activities that need both concentration (注意力) and skill.
“When people are absorbed in (全神贯注于) what they are doing, they enter a state (状态) called ‘fIow’,” Dattilo explained. “Flow can be achieved by doing activities that we think they are important and that need us to concentrate fully to use our skills.”
To achieve a state of flow, there must be a balance between the challenge (挑战) of the task and your skill level. For example, if you’re trying to create a complex (复杂的) computer program but your skill level is low, then you’re likely to feel worried instead of achieving “flow”. On the contrary (相反地), if the task is too easy, then boredom will set in and you won’t have a state of “flow”, either.
If you have artistic skills, for example, playing the piano or painting can lead to flow. So can things like skiing, writing and storytelling, depending on who you are.
“When we enter a state of flow, we become absorbed and focused, and we experience momentary enjoyment,” Dattilo said. “When we leave a state of flow, we are often surprised by how much time has passed.”
However, watching television usually doesn’t help people enter flow, according to Dattilo, because there aren’t any challenges.
“People tend to thrive (苗壮成长) on healthy activities and challenges,” said Dattilo. “We hope this research will help people live fuller, happier, healthier lives.”
53. What did Dattilo study?
A. Why people feel lonely. B. How people reduce loneliness.
C. What enjoyable activities are. D. Why people like a new challenge.
54. How do people feel when they enter the “flow” state?
A. They feel worried and tired. B. They feel time passes too slowly.
C. They are lonely and bored. D. They are concentrating and happy.
55. Which activity is possible to help people achieve flow?
A. Watching TV. B. Chatting. C. Writing. D. Eating nuts.
56. According to Dattilo, we can reduce loneliness during lockdown by ________.
A. following a healthy lifestyle B. completing impossible challenges
C. learning as many skills as possible D. doing some enjoyable and challenging tasks
D
Sunshine, beaches and coconuts (椰子)—these are why people usually go to Hainan. But more than a paradise (天堂) for travelers and foodies, it’s also a wonderland of plants and animals.
Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, in the south-central part of Hainan Island, has the most and well-kept tropical rainforests (热带雨林) in China. President Xi Jinping visited it in April.
The national park covers 4,269 square kilometers, or one-seventh of the island. More than 95 percent of the park is virgin (原始状态的) forest and is home to 3,653 species of vascular plants (维管植物) and 540 species of terrestrial vertebrates (陆生脊椎动物).
The park is the only habitat (栖息地) of the world’s most endangered primate (灵长类动物)—the Hainan gibbon (长臂猿). It’s an uncommon species (种类). They look like monkeys, but have no tails. They live in the trees their whole lifetimes. Every morning, they whistle loudly to mark their territory (领地). They eat fruits and leaves from more than 130 plants. The number of Hainan gibbons has increased from fewer than 10 in the 1980 s to 36 in 2022. This shows China’s achievements in environmental protection.
Not just a sweet home to animals, the park is a “live museum” of amazing plants. More than 400 kinds of plants grow only in Hainan. Cycas hainanensis (海南苏铁) is a wild plant native to the island. With feather-like leaves, this plant can live to be 200 years old. If it lives in the Yangtze River Basin and North China, it grows almost without flowers or fruit. But in Hainan, cycas hainanensis plants over 10 years old blossom (开花) and bear fruit almost every year, thanks to the warm and humid (湿润的) weather.
With so many plants and animals, the biodiversity index (生物多样性指数) of the park—a number to rate species diversity—is as high as 6.28. It is comparable (可比较的) to the Amazon rainforest in Brazil. That’s why people call the park a treasure for both China and the world.
57. Paragraph 3 is mainly about ________.
A. an introduction to the park B. the views of the park
C. the news of the park’s opening D. details of rare plants and animals
58. What do we know about the Hainan gibbon?

C. It lives on plants and birds. D. It is a species only found in Hainan.

A. never blossoms and bears fruit B. can only live for 10 years in Hainan

请认真阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容回答问题。
One day, while our cab was waiting outside a park, a dirty old cab drove up beside us. The horse was an old chestnut. Suddenly she looked at me and said, “Black Beauty, is that you?”
It was Ginger! But how different she was! She was thin, and tired from too much hard work. She looked miserable (痛苦的) and she had a bad cough. She told me her sad story.
She had a year’s rest and then a gentleman bought her. For a while she got on very well. Then one day after a long gallop (飞奔) her old problem returned, and her back hurt again. They bought and sold her several times after that.
“Then at last,” she said, “a man who has a lot of cabs and horses bought me. I work hard, all week, with no rest on Sundays. I wish I was dead.”
I was very sad to hear this. I put my nose up to Ginger’s, but I didn’t know what to say to her. She said, “Black Beauty, you are my only friend.”
Just then her driver came back, and they drove off. I felt very sad indeed to see Ginger like this.
A short time after this I saw a cart with a dead horse in it. It was a chestnut horse with a long, thin neck. I think it was Ginger. I hope so, for then all her problems were over.
One day a lady got into the cab. “Jeremiah Barker,” she said, “Is that you? How are Polly and the children?”
I listened to Jerry’s answer and I came to know Mrs Fowler was a lady Polly once worked for. She asked Jerry:
“How do you find the cab work in winter? I know Polly was worried about you last year.”
“Yes, ma’am, it was a hard winter and I had a bad cough,” he replied.
“Well, Barker,” Mrs Fowler continued, “I know people who want good drivers or grooms. If you stop working on the cabs one day, let me know.”
“Certainly, ma’am,” smiled Jerry. “Thank you,” he said, and he seemed very pleased.

Dear friends,
I’m proud to be here to share what we’ve done with you.
Above all, helping parents at home makes us feel happy. We often tidy up our rooms, do some washing, and prepare breakfast for family members. Also, it’s meaningful to offer our support to the society. We volunteer to separate waste into different groups in our community. We send some books and clothes to the poor children as well. We offer to help the elderly at the weekends.
Our group members have decided to do something to make a difference. We’ll help my parents with housework as much as we can. What’s more, our members even plan to plant more trees to improve the environment. Through our tiny actions, all of us can be richer and happier in our life.
Hope you can join us!
Best wishes!
