My wife Hannah, and I don’t usually keep houseplants. Anything in pots gets either over watered or under watered. But after my diagnosis (诊断) with a brain cancer, I loved the idea of having something new and green around.
My friend Mitch gave me what he said was a lucky bamboo plant in a deep-green pot. I told Hannah I wanted to care for the plant myself. The cancer limited my ability to walk, and the treatment made it hard for me to accomplish everyday tasks. Tending to the plant gave me a sense of accomplishment at a time when I sometimes felt useless. Over the next few months, I recovered from an operation. Even after I returned to work, I continued to care for the plant. Soon, it had nearly doubled in height and its leaves were shiny and lush (茂盛). Both the tree and I were thriving.
Then, surprisingly, it began to show signs of stress. I increased my watering, then decreased it. I fed it commercial plant food. No matter what I did, the leaves kept browning and dropping to the floor. I grew more and more frustrated. “I can’t even care for a simple plant!” I yelled. “I’m failing!” Hannah reminded me that we’d seen houseplants die before. She asked me why I was getting so worked up about this particular one. “If my lucky bamboo dies,” I blurted out (脱口而出), “I might die too!” Now that the tree was struggling, I felt increasingly fearful. Its browning leaves, I worried, might signal the recurrence of my brain cancer.
Sunk in thought, I realized I had wrongly connected my careful nurturing of the plant—something over which I had at least some control—with my own survival—something over which I had no control. As my anxiety lessened, I began to learn online guides to help me figure out how to care for my plant. Following the instructions, I transplanted the tree to a larger pot, untangling its roots to give it room to grow. When it was back in the sunny window, we both began to thrive again.
4. What can we learn about the bamboo plant?
A. It was Hannah that cared for the bamboo.
B. The writer showed no interest in the bamboo.
C. The bamboo gave the writer a sense of accomplishment.
D. The leaves of bamboo kept dropping to the floor because of lack of water.
5. What is the meaning of the underlined word?
A. harmful B. fast-growing C. scared D. deadly
6. Why was the author so frightened after seeing the leaves fall to the ground?
A. The plant was a gift from his best friend.
B. He didn’t want to see the plant die like before.
C. The plant had become a symbol of his own threatening health.
D. His wife did not understand his special feelings for this plant.
7. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. My lucky bamboo B. My wife and bamboo
C. The benefits of keeping bamboo D. The way to keep bamboo
C 5. B 6. C 7. A

根据文章第二段“Tending to the plant gave me a sense of accomplishment at a time when I sometimes felt useless.”(照顾这株植物给了我一种成就感,有时我觉得自己很没用。)
根据文章第二段“Over the next few months, I recovered from an operation. Even after I returned to work, I continued to care for the plant. Soon, it had nearly doubled in height and its leaves were shiny and lush (茂盛).”(在接下来的几个月里,我从手术中恢复过来。即使在我回到工作岗位后,我也继续照料这株植物。很快,它的高度几乎增加了一倍,叶子闪闪发光,郁郁葱葱。)叙述的是作者从手术中恢复,植物也长得很好;所以后文讲述的是“我”和植物都在茁壮成长。故选B。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“‘If my lucky bamboo dies,’ I blurted out (脱口而出), ‘I might die too!’ Now that the tree was struggling, I felt increasingly fearful. Its browning leaves, I worried, might signal the recurrence of my brain cancer.”(“如果我的幸运竹子死了,”我脱口而出,“我也可能会死!”
根据第二段“My friend Mitch gave me what he said was a lucky bamboo plant in a deep-green pottery bowl with three pencil-sized stalks braided together.”(我的朋友米奇送给我一个深绿色的陶碗,里面有三根铅笔大小的茎,他说这是一株幸运的竹子。) 所以“A Healing Bamboo(一株有治疗功用的竹子)”。 故选A。

Yoga has a well-deserved reputation for helping to improve balance and flexibility and for promoting calm and relaxation. But when it comes to weight loss, many people assume that other types of exercise, like cardio or strength training will be more helpful. While you might not burn as many calories (卡路里) by practicing yoga as you would by running or doing some other high-intensity aerobic activity (有氧运动), yoga can still raise your heart rate and help build muscle-and, at rest, muscle burns about twice as many calories as fat does. “Studies show that aerobic forms of exercise, which is any exercise that uses your large muscle groups and raises your heart rate, are beneficial for weight loss,” says Sally Sherwin, a yoga teacher with the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Yoga. “Power or vinyasa yoga, a type of high intensity yoga, fits this kind.”
Just how many calories you burn varies depending on how long and intense your exercise is, as well as other factors, such as your weight, age and gender. But according to Erin Casperson, lead faculty with the Kripalu Center for Yoga &Health, practicing yoga can also help you burn more calories long after you hit the mat, even if you don’t do more intense forms of yoga. That’s because yoga’s other benefits can help with weight loss too.
Yoga helps manage stress, and studies show that high levels of cortisol (皮质醇), a stress hormone, can lead to an increase in abdominal fat, Cortisol surges can also increase your cravings for high-fat and high sugar foods and drinks while simultaneously reducing your muscle mass. “Yoga has an impact on the body’s stress response and reduces the production of hormones linked to weight gain such as cortisol,” Erin Casperson says.
Several studies have confirmed that doing yoga does reduce cortisol levels. In one study, researchers found that practicing yoga seemed to impact the hypothalamus (下丘脑), reducing cortisol production. And a 2020 study found that doing meditative yoga reduced participants’ salivary cortisol levels.
8. What can be inferred from paragraph 1?
A. Yoga doesn’t contribute to weight loss.
B. You might burn more calories by practicing yoga than running.
C. Yoga plays an important role in raising your heart rate and building muscles.
D. Cardio and strength training are known for helping to improve balance and flexibility.
9. The amount of calories you burn differs depending on ______
A. the intense forms of yoga B. the duration and intension of your exercise
C. the type of yoga mat you select D. the type of aerobic exercise you choose
10. According to Erin Casperson, which of the following statements is correct?
A. The reason why yoga can lose weight lies in its intense exercise.
B. We can combine other forms of sports to lose weight except for yoga.
C. We must do more intense forms of yoga in order to burn more calories.
D. Yoga can decrease the production of cortisol which is connected with weight gain.
11. Who would be interested in the passage?
A. A journalist who writes travel journals. B. A student who likes playing sports.
C. A novelist who tries to lose weight. D. A teacher who enjoys reading magazines.
C 9. B 10. D 11. C

Doris was a 68-year-old woman who lived alone. Her children lived in a different city and her husband had passed away. In order not to feel lonely, she would take daily walks at the nearby park. One afternoon she saw her neighbor’s son, Martin. He sat alone on a park bench (长椅). Concerned, Doris approached him and asked where his mother Lucy was. “She’s still at work,” Martin answered.
“She left you here so she could work? Have you been here the entire day?” Doris asked. Martin nodded, explaining his mom had just got a new job that required her to be out from 9 am to 5 pm. Doris checked her watch, seeing it was 2:30 pm. “Have you eaten?” she asked. Martin replied he had eaten some bread.
Doris felt bad for the poor boy. Not wanting to leave him alone, she sat with him and waited for Lucy to pick him up. Later Martin felt his feet were so cold. Doris found his socks were thin and worn out. She took out a shawl (披肩) from her bag and put it around Martin’s legs.
Finally, Lucy appeared. “Lucy, it’s dangerous for Martin to be out here alone the entire day, Doris said. Ashamed, Lucy said that she wanted to take care of Martin, but she had to get a job because of their increasing bills to pay.
“It’s my first day at my new job. I can’t leave Martin at home alone. If social services (社会服务机构) find it, they won’t allow me to raise him anymore. I have no choice but to leave him in the park in order to work,” she added. Doris knew Lucy was trying her best but also felt bad that Martin would have to stay out in the cold every day. After all, winter was coming.
The following morning, when Lucy went to work, Doris met her outside her home. Lucy said that Martin wasn’t feeling well and was still sleeping. He had to stay home for the day. Doris understood Lucy was risking being caught by social services leaving Martin alone at home. So, she offered, “I’d be happy to take care of Martin at your home or mine.”

The two spent the entire day together, exchanging stories. Finally, Lucy returned. And they said goodbye.
When Doris left, Martin said, “Mom, can I ask Doris to be my grandmother?” Lucy smiled and nodded. The following morning, when Doris came to visit Martin he handed a card to her I made a card for you, “Martin said shyly.” You’re so sweet! Doris smiled.
