Siddharth Mandala, 18, the inventor of ElectroShoe—a device that enables the user to electrocute(电击)an offender and alarm the nearby police station and friends of their location, using Wi-Fi-has been a hit.
This inventor was inspired into action when he accompanied his mother to the Nirbhaya rallies(集会)in Hyderabad at 12. The streets, thick with anger, had his mind ticking, “There had to be a better way. Women may forget to carry pepper spray or other self-defence tools, but everyone puts on shoes.”
It took him two years to come up with the model, using social media to reach out to those who could help him. Mandala was awarded a letter of appreciation by the government of Telangana for his invention in May 2017.
Siddharth believes technology can truly change the quality of our lives. He launched Cognizance Welfare Initiative (CWI) two years ago to teach coding to students and helped them build microcontroller projects such as a GPS tracking system to locate their friends in danger areas.
The Hyderabad-based CWI inspires children to use science to enable them to create solutions for their communities, works to spread awareness about violence and conducts book drives, educates communities on water pollution and helps children improve their reading skills. So far CWI has taught over 500 children and plans to expand to two more villages. Mandala is now working with his friends on developing a programme to identify malignant melanoma(恶性黑素瘤)with a phone camera.

The next time San Franciscans take a cab, they may step into a driverless car. Last week, the CaliforniaPublic Utilities Commission gave a permit to Cruise, the self-driving vehicle subsidiary(附带的)of General Motors (GM), which allows Cruise to charge for rides in its autonomous cars.
Though Cruise sees the permit as a big win, its self-driving cars aren’t free to meander(蜿蜒前行)the streets as they please. It can operate just 30 autonomous vehicles without a safety driver and can only charge for rides between 10 p. m. and 6 a. m. outside of the busy downtown. No autonomous taxi rides are allowed when there’s heavy rain, fog or snow. And shared rides aren’t allowed.
Cruise’s technology is made up of a series of sensors and cameras built into an electric car made by GM. Cruise has also announced plans for a car of their own, the Cruise Origin. The Origin lacks pedals, mirrors, a steering wheel and consists mostly of a sitting space where passengers can face each other.
Supporters of self-driving vehicles say the technology has the potential to reduce traffic deaths and injuries, save money and lower the environmental impact of cars. But not everyone is convinced that autonomous cars are ready. Many remain concerned about safety.
It remains to be seen how the driverless taxi will play out in San Francisco. But based on the vast number of companies racing to develop autonomous vehicles and the tens of thousands of people on waitlists for robotaxi rides, the Cruise pilot program is sure to be popular.
8. What can we learn about Cruise’s self-driving cars?
A. They can go wherever they like.
B. They can be shared by customers.
C. They can only go on street in fine weather.
D. They can charge for rides anytime.
9. What poses a worry about autonomous cars?
A. Cost. B. Safety. C. Pollution. D. Traffic jam.
10. What is the author’s attitude towards Cruise’s driverless cars program?
A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Confused. D. Disappointed.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. Cruise’s driverless cars are getting popularity.
B. Cruise was allowed to sell its driverless cars.
C. Cruise’s driverless cars were allowed to go on streets.
D. Cruise was qualified to charge for rides in its driverless cars.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. A 11. D

Exploring unmapped territory on the moon could soon be as easy as slipping on a backpack. NASA researchers designed a new high-tech pack for navigating(给引航)unknown territories in outer space.
The backpack uses a remote-sensing mapping system to create high-resolution(高分辨)3-D maps that astronauts could use to explore the southernmost point on the moon according to a statement. NASA’s dynamic technology is like the technology used by smart cars to alert their drivers of potential collisions(碰撞).
“Basically, the sensor is a surveying tool for both navigation and science mapping, able to create ultra-high-resolution 3-D maps at centimeter-level precision and give them a rich scientific context,”tells Michael Zanetti, a scientist. “It will also help ensure the safety of astronauts and rover vehicles in a GPS-denied environment such as the Moon by identifying actual distances to far-off landmarks and showing explorers in real time how far they’ve come and how far is left.”
NASA plans to have astronauts return to the moon by 2025. The team is set to land near the lunar south pole because previous evidence suggests that the area may contain subsurface water ice. Part of the reason astronauts would need a GPS tracking backpack is because the area on the moon’s south pole is shrouded by shadows, making it difficult for space explorers to estimate distances on the moon.
Next, NASA is working on bringing the backpack’s weight and size down. Currently. It weighs 40 pounds, but the team hopes that the tech could be small enough to fit on an astronaut’s helmet.
12. What are Michael Zanetti’s words mainly about?
A. The working principle of the backpack. B. The challenges of the backpack.
C. The shortcomings of the backpack. D. The development of the backpack.
13. What does the underlined word “shrouded”in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Mixed. B. Reduced. C. Covered. D. Separated.
14. What is NASA planning to do?
A. Make the backpack cheaper. B. Make the backpack more accurate.
C. Make the backpack more fashionable. D. Make the backpack lighter and smaller.
15. Where is the text most likely from?
A A travel journal. B. A science magazine.
C. An impressive novel. D. A personal notebook.
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. D 15. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章讲述NASA的研究人员设计了一款新的高科技包,用于在外太空的未知领域进行导航。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Basically, the sensor is a surveying tool for both navigation and science mapping, able to create ultra-high-resolution 3-D maps at centimeter-level precision and give them a rich scientific context(基本上,传感器是导航和科学测绘的测量工具,能够创建厘米级精度的超高分辨率3d地图,并为它们提供丰富的科学背景)”以及“It will also help ensure the safety of astronauts and rover vehicles in a GPS-denied environment such as the Moon by identifying actual distances to far-off landmarks and showing explorers in real time how far they’ve come and how far is left.(它还将通过识别到遥远地标的实际距离,并实时显示探险者他们已经走了多远,还剩下多远,从而帮助确保宇航员和月球车在月球等没有GPS的环境中的安全)”可知,此处在描述这款高科技包的工作原理。故选A。
【13题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第四段“astronauts would need a GPS tracking backpack(astronauts)”以及“making it difficult for space explorers to estimate distances on the moon.(这使得太空探险者很难估计月球上的距离)”可知,因为很难估计月球上的距离,因此安装GPS系统,即这段距离被阴影遮蔽住,探险者无法观测才导致无法测距。因此推断出划线单词含义是遮蔽,覆盖。故选C。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Next, NASA is working on bringing the backpack’s weight and size down. Currently.(接下来,NASA将致力于降低背包的重量和尺寸。)”可知,NASA计划降低背包的重量和尺寸。故选D。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“NASA researchers designed a new high-tech pack for navigating(给引航)unknown territories in outer space.(美国国家航空航天局研究人员设计了一种新的高科技包,用于在外太空的未知领域导航。)”可知,本文主要讲述NASA设计的一款高科技包,即科学技术发明,由此推断出,本文出自科学杂志。故选B。

Signal for help in the wild
Having multiple effective ways to signal for help can make all the difference in a survival situation where outside help is guaranteed. Signaling is one of the most under-practiced and under-emphasized skill sets in our survival, and it’s about time we took it more seriously. ____16____
Cell phone used for signaling. In areas where service is available, your call for help can be made to the exact right people and vast amounts of information can be conveyed. ____17____If you’ll be spending time in an area without cell service, consider buying(or renting)a satellite phone, which will allow you to make a call from anywhere on earth.
Signal whistle. The humble whistle is a fine piece of signal gear for short-range audible signaling. Three blasts of a whistle are generally interpreted as a universal signal for distress. ____18____Also, select whistles that are attached to rings to prevent loss. Blow the whistle in blasts of three and to stay in one spot until help arrives.
Signal mirror. A signal mirror is one of the furthest reaching, non-electronic signal methods. Properly aimed, a signal mirror can shine a beam of daylight up to 10 miles, creating a flash of light that can catch the attention of distant aircraft, watercraft, vehicles, or persons on foot. Purchase a mirror with a sighting lens and sweep the mirror VERY slowly right to left and up and down.____19____
Signal flag. Flags have been used for signaling for thousands of years. And while there are commercially available signal flags, you also can create your own. A brightly colored or contrasting colored garment tied to a stick serves as a quick flag. ____20____Your homemade flag could be virtually any shape, so long as it is a large panel of material that doesn’t blend into the surroundings. Flags can also be laid out on the ground for ground-to-air signaling.
A. But in most cases, signaling with a whistle makes little difference.
B. Select brightly colored whistles, which are easy to spot if dropped.
C. While in areas with a weaker signal, try sending out a text message.
D. A space blanket and other reflective material makes an excellent flag as well.
E. This should sweep the beam across your target and hopefully get someone’s attention.
F. Follow my lead and learn how to assist in your own rescue with our signaling methods.
G. Here’s some practical advice for you to follow if you are really at a loss about various signals.
【答案】16. F 17. C 18. B 19. E 20. D

第二节(满分25分)
47. 读后续写
My father is funny, smart, hardworking and loving. He taught me to drive, throw a baseball, and fish. One other thing my dad’s good at is holding a bit of a grudge(怨恨). For most of my teen years, he didn’t speak to his younger brother, although they were at many family functions together.
I was never sure why my dad was so angry with my uncle in the first place. But they spent many Christmases, Thanksgivings and Easter Sundays seated at opposite ends of the table. It was simply something that we all accepted at the time.
When I was nineteen, I got a call in my college dorm that my dad was having serious medical problems. My mom and grandmother picked me up in the middle of the night so I could be there the next day when he was scheduled to transfer to a better hospital. I didn’t sleep that night, not a wink. I tossed, turned and was almost crazy when we arrived at the hospital early the next morning before the transfer.
That morning, as my mom and I walked down the hallway of the hospital, we could see straight into my dad’s room. A tall man wearing a stylish suit stood over my father’s bed with his back to us. Casually, my mom remarked how nice it was for the doctor to come by to see my dad so early in the morning. But through my sleepless fog, something about the scene struck me as odd. The man with his back to us was standing very quietly and still, looking down, but he was holding both of my dad’s hands in his own. Not typical doctor behavior.
I stopped cold in my tracks and whispered softly to my mom, “That’s not a doctor.” I knew right away it was my uncle. But, little did I know, I would continue to reflect on that quiet moment for decades. And it would be the beginning of something truly wonderful.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
My dad had had a brain aneurysm (动脉瘤) and ended up in the hospital for quite a while.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Thankfully, my dad pulled through beautifully.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
My dad had had a brain aneurysm(动脉瘤)and ended up in the hospital for quite a while. My uncle stayed with my mom and me the entire time. He forced me to eat, bringing me healthy snacks and making sure I actually ate them even though I had no appetite. He gave me his mobile phone, a novelty at the time, to check in with my best friend. He supported my mom as she tried to stay strong for me. When I think back on those uncertain days, I remember two things: being scared and my uncle by our side.
Thankfully, my dad pulled through beautifully. He didn’t even need surgery. Somehow, the brain aneurysm healed itself. I don’t have much medical knowledge, but it always seemed like a miracle. The other miracle was my father’s new relationship with his brother. He couldn’t hold a grudge anymore. Not only had my uncle helped him but he had helped my mom and me get through the hardest days of our life. After that, my dad and his brother became as close as they could be. It was incredible to watch them get to know each other again, and become the best of friends.
