Shizo Kanakuri, known as the “father of the Japanese marathon”, was one of only two Japanese athletes to compete in the 1912 Stockholn Olympics. The media gave little attention and the government did not cover athletes’ travel costs. As a result, Kanakuri’s fellow college students organized a nationwide fundraiser (资金筹集活动) to collect money.
The trip to Sweden took 18 days, first by ship and then by the Trans-Siberian Railway. At stations, whenever the train stopped, Kanakuri would jump for a quick workout before hurriedly getting on the train again. The difficult journey had taken its toll, and when he finally arrived in Sweden, he discovered that the local food didn’t agree with his stomach. To make matters worse, Kanakuri’s coach had to stay in bed due to a serious disease which prevented him from giving two athletes, including Kanakuri, enough pre-race training.
On the day of the race, the heat was scorching (灼热的). One Portuguese runner was hospitalized and died the next day, the first reported death during the Olympics. About halfway into the race, suffering from the heat, Kanakuri stopped at a house and asked the locals for a glass of water. After drinking, Kanakuri lay down and against his better judgment fell asleep. When he woke up, it was the next morning.
Kanakuri wrote in his journal the next day, “It’s the morning after my defeat. My heart is aching with regret for the rest of my life. I was a weak quitter.” Kanakuri did not tell the race officials, and quietly returned to Japan, thus many people thought he “disappeared” in the middle of the race.
Once back in his country, Kanakuri renewed training and determined to race again in the future. In 1967, Kanakuri returned to Stockholm and finished the race. When he finally crossed the finish line, his time was announced as 54 years 8 months 6 days 5 hours 32 minutes 20.3 seconds. Kanakuri joked, “It was a long trip. Along the way, I got married, had six children and 10 grandchildren.”
4. What happened to Kanakuri during his first journey to Sweden?
A. He was exposed by national media. B. He fell ill due to the local climate.
C. He tried his best to keep training. D. He was sponsored by the government.
5. Which of the following best explains “had taken its toll” underlined in paragraph 2?
A. Had had a bad effect on him. B. Had aroused his will to fight.
C. Had given him a chance. D. Had come to an end.
6. How did Kanakuri feel about his first race in Sweden?
A. Ashamed. B. Touched. C. Excited. D. Confused.
7. What can we learn from this story?
A. Pride hurts, modesty benefits. B. Failure is the mother of success.
C. Interest is the best teacher. D. Practice makes perfect.
【答案】4. C 5. A 6. A 7. B

【5题详解】
词义猜测题。根据画线短语下文“when he finally arrived in Sweden, he discovered that the local food didn’t agree with his stomach”(当他最终到达瑞典时,他发现当地的食物与他的胃不符)和“To make matters worse, Kanakuri’s coach had to stay in bed due to a serious disease which prevented him from giving two athletes, including Kanakuri, enough pre-race training.”(更糟糕的是,由于一种严重的疾病,Kanakuri的教练不得不卧床休息,这使他无法给包括Kanakuri在内的两名运动员进行足够的赛前训练。) 故选A项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段关键句“Kanakuri wrote in his journal the next day, “It’s the morning after my defeat. My heart is aching with regret for the rest of my life. I was a weak quitter.””(Kanakuri在第二天的日记中写道:“这是我失败后的第二天早上。我的余生都在为遗憾而痛苦。我是一个软弱的放弃者。”)可知,Kanakuri认为自己是一个软弱的放弃者,为此感到痛苦,由此可知,Kanakuri对他在瑞典的第一场比赛感到羞愧。故选A项。
【7题详解】

Trees don’t look at the calendar to see when spring arrives, but they seem to know when spring is here better than we do. The annual shift from winter to spring is a breathtaking event to watch as leaves become green and a lush(苍翠的) environment reveals itself. Recently a research takes a look at why trees in cities are turning green earlier than expected.
Scientists use satellite imagery to see when plants turn green. By comparing spring green ups in the 85 largest US cities, scientists found that on average trees start to turn green nine days earlier in cities due to the combined effect of artificial lights and urban heat effect.
According to the findings, one of the reasons is the artificial light. City lights brightening the night skies, billboard signs lit up on roadways and car headlights all contribute to shifting the regular day to night cycle that plants and trees rely on. In order to stay alive during cruel winters, trees hit the pause button on their growth. Since temperatures can vary dramatically throughout the winter, the length of daylight is the signal trees look for to safely start growing again and turn green.
On average cities are typically 1.8 to 5.4F warmer than rural areas. This is known as the urban heat island effect. The changes in city environments may affect seasonal changes even more than climate warming and mosquito season, water cycles, and also affect pollinators(授粉媒介).
Despite the worries and concern, it isn’t all bad news. “With a longer growing season, trees would be able to absorb more carbon dioxide,” A researcher said. “Hopefully they’d have a longer period to do the cooling effect that can help relieve the urban heating effect in cities.”
8. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To reveal how trees survive bitter winters.
B. To warn how human activities disturb nature.
C. To explain why trees turn green earlier in cities.
D. To clarify how trees turning green earlier benefits cities.
9. How did the scientists conduct their research?
A. Bringing out urban heat island effect.
B. Comparing the green-up time in sample cities.
C. Allowing the city environment to reveal itself.
D. Developing pictures shot by the satellite.
10. Which of the following elements contributes to trees turning green earlier?
A. Plant pollinators. B. Water cycle. C. Road signs. D. Street lamps.
11. In which section of a website can the text be found?
A. Environment. B. Education. C. Entertainment. D. Business.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. D 11. A

Pineapples(菠萝) were so popular in colonial(殖民的) times that people would rent them for a day to use as a party decoration. Yes, at one point in history, the pineapple was too expensive to eat. Even today, fake pineapples are seen to be used as decorations, while images and carvings of the fruit often appear in historic buildings. Where did pineapple get its status?
Early in the colonial era, explorers (including Christopher Columbus) brought rare crops back to Europe. Pineapples were among those imports. But the pineapple couldn’t grow in European climates. Planting the fruit, even in the controlled environment of a hothouse, was extremely formidable. Still, the rich liked the taste of the fruit so much that they were willing to pay a high price to get their hands on one, which had to be imported from across the Atlantic Ocean.
In the 17th century, only extremely wealthy people could afford pineapples. Royals enjoyed eating the sweet fruit, which represented their great fortunes and social status. King Charles Ⅱ, who ruled England until 1685, posed with a pineapple for one of his official portraits(肖像). The treat also was in demand in colonial America. George Washington praised the fruit in his diary and said, “None pleases my tastes like the pineapple.”
What did the high demand mean for the price? In today’s money, a George Washington-era pineapple would cost as much as $8000. Similar price tags were also recorded in Europe.
Because of their shortage and price, pineapples were originally served only to most-honored guests. That idea was translated into pineapple images so that those who couldn’t afford the fruit itself could still share the idea. Towns inns and even individual households would display pictures or carvings of the fruit to convey a sense of welcoming. This cultural meaning continues to this day. For example pineapples are sometimes included in housewarming fruit baskets. Several hotels use pineapples in their branding, including Preferred Hotels & Resorts and the Staypineapple collection of boutique hotels.
12. What can be inferred about pineapples from the first paragraph?
A They’ve been used to make cakes for centuries.
B. They enjoyed huge popularity in history.
C. They originally lacked a good mouthfeel.
D. They appeared as common food on dinner tables.
13. What does the underlined word “formidable” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Necessary. B. Rewarding. C. Difficult. D. Practical.
14. What happened to pineapples in the 17th century?
A. They symbolized wealth and nobility. B. They were introduced to America.
C. They were merely served to royal families. D. They were improved to meet the great demand.
15. What is mainly talked about in the last paragraph?
A. The change in pineapple consumption groups.
B. The wide application of the pineapple images.
C. Pineapples’ symbolic meaning in modern days.
D. Pineapples cultural meaning.

13-year-old Ryan was a lazy video game addict who always required the help of the housekeeper for everything. His father, Alex, noticed how spoiled(宠坏的) his son was, so he decided to set things right.
One day, Ryan was running late for school, but he was still busy playing video games. He was so distracted that he had no time to put on his socks and shoes, so the housekeeper did it for him.
“Dad, I’m ready. Let’s go!” he finally shouted, taking his school bag. Alex had always driven him to his school even though it was just a seven-minute walk from their home. For Ryan, that would seem like a hundred tiring miles.
That morning, to Ryan’s surprise, Alex asked him to walk to school instead. “What? No! I can’t carry this heavy bag to school on foot. Please drop me off, Dad,” Ryan said. But Alex turned a deaf ear. “You’re a grown-up boy now, Ryan! Just walk. Get used to it,” he said.
Ryan had no choice but to walk along the road. He was out of breath when he got to the school gate. He came into his classroom and sat on the chair quickly. He was tired. He wasn’t used to walking, even for a few minutes. What a lazy and weak boy Ryan was!
When Ryan was still resting, he found a boy he didn’t know entering the classroom in a wheelchair. The boy was Mike, who was new to Ryan’s neighborhood and lived very close to Ryan’s house. He moved in with his grandparents recently after he lost his ability to walk in a car crash that killed his parents. Regardless of his extremely bad luck, Mike decided to be strong, optimistic, confident, brave and independent.
Although Mike was new in class, all classmates welcomed him warmly. Ryan never made a single friend all these years. Nobody liked him because he was lazy. The attention Mike got that day made him more upset.
The next day, Ryan begged his dad to drive him to his school again. But Alex just shook his head. Quite disappointed, Ryan had to walk to school,
