Have you bought any second-hand things? Have you sold anything of yours to others? Any stories behind it?
After a whole week of rain, we finally had a comfortable, beautiful summer day outside. My family and I were driving to a nearby town when my daughter found a yard sale. We saw old toys and a couple of guitars. We saw huge piles of clothes and even a piece of furniture (家具) or two for sale. Best of all, we saw lots of smiling people talking, laughing, sitting and standing in the sunshine.
Seeing all of this brought back memories of my childhood. Most of my clothes back then came from yard sales. My mom was a talented yard sale shopper. I used to hate going to them until one special day when I saw that they also sold old books there. After that, I always browsed (浏览) the books until it was time to go and sometimes my mom would buy me one too. Soon a large part of my home library came from yard sale books. To me, they were more priceless than new ones.
Why do we have yard sales? We throw away our old things and we buy “new” old things. But it certainly isn’t for the money. It’s that yard sales bring us together. We talk and catch up with old friends and new neighbors. We connect (联系) with kindness and our love for all the old stuff (物品).
I think yard sales teach us something about life, too. We can’t really own anything here, after all. All we get is to have the stuff for a period of time. Then it is time to let it go and pass it on.

A. To ask some questions. B. To lead in the topic of the text.
C. To tell the difference. D. To give some useful advice.
52. How was the weather when they were driving to the town?
A. Sunny. B. Snowy. C. Rainy. D. Windy.
53. Which of the following things from yard sales interested the writer a lot more?
A. Clothes and furniture. B. Old books.
C. Happy and smiling people. D. Guitars and old toys.
54. What is probably the main reason why people have yard sales?
A. To make more money. B. To throw away old things.
C. To find something valuable. D. To connect with others.
55. What is the writer’s opinion about belongings?
A. We can own things forever.
B. We should keep everything we buy.
C. We need to let things go and pass them on.
D. We’d better forget the past and face forward.
D
I work at a company (公司) where there are about a number of employees. I can’t say that I know them all by name, but I know most of them. Because it’s all based on one simple principle: I believe every single person should be respected, however small or simple the greeting is.
When I was about ten years old, I was walking down the street with my mother. She stopped to speak to Mr. Lee. I was busy trying to throw a rock at the “O” in the stop sign. I knew I could see Mr. Lee any old time around the neighborhood, so I didn’t pay any attention to him. After we passed Mr. Lee, my mother stopped me and said something that has been with me from that day until now. She said, “You let that be the last time you ever walk by somebody and not open up your mouth to speak, because even a dog can wag its tail when it passes you on the street.”
From that day on, this sentence has always been in my heart. I believe that every person deserves (应得) to feel someone acknowledge (承认) their presence, no matter how low their social position may be or even how important.
I remembered after a few years of passing by the boss, I had the courage to ask him for a meeting. We had a great talk. At a certain point, I asked him how far he thought I could go in his company. He said, “If you want to, you can get all the way to this seat.”
The day you speak to someone who has his head held down and when he lifts it up and smiles, you realize how powerful it is just to open your mouth and say, “Hello.”
56. What does the underlined word “principle” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. method B. knowledge C. belief D. theme
57. How did the writer behave when he saw Mr. Lee?
A. The writer talked happily with Mr. Lee.
B. The writer and Mr. Lee had a big fight.
C. The writer greeted Mr. Lee with a smile.
D. The writer paid no attention to Mr. Lee.
58. What did the writer’s mother think of his behavior?
A. His mother was proud of him. B. His mother did agree with him.
C. His mother thought he was impolite. D. His mother encouraged him to do like that.
59. What can you infer from the words of the boss?
A. He thought well of the writer. B. He looked down upon the writer.
C. He will increase the salary of the writer. D. He will kick the writer off the company.
60. Which is the best title for the text?
A. The Story of My Childhood B. The Power of Greeting
C. An Unusual Experience D. Meeting the Best Leaders
