My name is Alice. Early last year, I was troubled by an anxiety that weakened my ability to do anything. I felt like a storm cloud hung over me. For almost a year I struggled on, constantly staring at this wall that faced me. My perfectionist tendencies were the main root of this: I wanted to be perfect at whatever I did, which obviously in life is not possible, but it consumed me.
One day, I attended a presentation by wildlife conservationist Grant Brown at my high school. His presentation not only awed and inspired me, but also helped emerge an inner desire to make a difference in the world. I joined a pre-presentation dinner with him and that smaller setting allowed me to slowly build up my courage to speak one-on-one with him –– an idea that had seemed completely impossible. This first contact was where my story began.
A month later, Brown invited me to attend the World Youth Wildlife Conference. Looking back, I now see this would be the first in a series of timely opportunities that my old self would have let pass, but that this new and more confident Alice enthusiastically seized. Shortly after I received his invitation, applications to join the Youth for Nature and the Youth for Planet groups were sent around through my high school. I decided to commit myself to completing the applications, and soon I was a part of a growing global team of young people working to protect nature. Each of these new steps continued to grow my confidence.
I am writing this just six months since my journey began and I’ve realized that my biggest obstacle the whole time was myself. It was that voice in the back of my head telling me that one phrase that has stopped so many people from reaching their potential: I can’t. They say good things come to those who wait. I say: grab every opportunity with everything you have and be impatient. After all, nature does not require our patience, but our action.
4. What was the main cause of Alice’s anxiety?
A. Her wish to be perfect. B. Her habit of consumption.
C. Her lack of inspiration. D. Her inability to act her age.
5. How did Grant Brown’s presentation influence Alice?
A. She built up her courage to speak up. B. She tasted the sweetness of friendship.
C. She learned about the harm of desire. D. She decided to do something for nature.
6. The activities Alice joined in helped her to become more ________.
A critical B. intelligent C. confident D. innovative
7. What can we learn from this passage?
A. Practice makes perfect. B. Action is worry’s worst enemy.
C. Patience is a cure of anxiety. D. Everything comes to those who wait.
【答案】4. A 5. D 6. C 7. B
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述作者通过参加保护自然活动治愈好了自己的焦虑。

I’ve been giving lots of thought recently to the teaching of the science subject at schools. I’m wondering whether spending more time learning how we “do” science –– the scientific method –– is more valuable than simply making children memorize scientific “facts”.
After all, science isn’t a collection of facts about the world. That’s just called “knowledge”. Rather, science is a process of thinking and making sense of the world, which will then lead to new knowledge. We’ve often heard it said that we should be teaching children not what to think but how to think. However, schools now spend so much of the science subject loading up children’s brains with “knowledge”.
Surely, everyone needs a basic scientific understanding. We all need to know some science: facts about the world to help us make informed decisions about important issues that face us all in our everyday lives, from the risks of smoking to the benefits of exercising or why recycling our waste is good for the planet.
Yet what seems to be missing today is an understanding of the way we gain this scientific understanding of the world. Nowadays, social media has played a significant role in spreading information. However, many people use it as a medium for spreading disinformation or harmful opinions. But social media has only enlarged the societal problem that has been with us.
On top of this, our attention spans(时长)are naturally getting shorter, and we don’t take the time to question our views, or ask whether the information we are getting is reliable. This is where thinking scientifically can help. Adopting some of the ways that good science is practiced can help us to critically assess what we believe, question our own views before we attack views we don’t like, and so on.
This is exactly why we should be teaching more of scientific methods in schools. This remarkable way of seeing, thinking and knowing, is one of humankind’s great riches and the birthright of everyone. And, most wonderfully, it only grows in quality and value the more widely it is shared.
8. What is the author concerned about according to Paragraph 1?
A. The teaching topics of the science subject. B. Students’ interest in the science subject.
C. The teaching content of the science subject. D. The lack of emphasis on science in schools.
9. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. The application of science in daily lives. B. The understanding of science in daily lives.
C. The method of knowing scientific facts. D. Some scientific phenomena in daily lives.
10. What does the underlined part “the societal problem” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The spread of false information. B. The misunderstanding of science.
C. The popularity of social media. D. The negative impact of social media.
11. What can students get from learning scientific methods?
A. Improved attention in class. B. Growing interest in science.
C. The deeper understanding of science. D. The ability to think critically.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. A 11. D
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇议论文。文章主要论述的是教师应该教学生科学方法而不是简单地灌输科学知识。
【8题详解】

【10题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第四段“Nowadays, social media has played a significant role in spreading information. However, many people use it as a medium for spreading disinformation or harmful opinions.(如今,社交媒体在传播信息方面发挥了重要作用。然而,许多人将其作为传播虚假信息或有害意见的媒介。)可知,许多人将社交媒体作为传播虚假信息或有害意见的媒介。推断出在这种情况下社交媒体会扩大我们面临的社会问题就是虚假信息的传播,划线部分的“社会问题”和A项“虚假信息的传播”指代相同。故选A项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“This is where thinking scientifically can help. Adopting some of the ways that good science is practiced can help us to critically assess what we believe, question our own views before we attack views we don’t like, and so on.”(这就是科学思考的帮助所在。采用一些好的实践科学的方法可以帮助我们批判性地评估我们的信仰,在攻击我们不喜欢的观点之前质疑我们自己的观点,等等。)可知,学生能从学习科学方法中得到批判性的思考能力。故选D项。

In order to help discover spoilage and reduce food waste for supermarkets and consumers, researchers have developed new low-cost, smart phone-linked, eco-friendly spoilage sensors for meat and fish packaging.
One in three UK consumers throw away food just because it reaches the use-by date, but 60% of the £12.5 billion-worth of food we throw away each year is safe to eat.
The researchers whose findings were published in ACS Sensors, say the sensors could also eventually replace the use-by date—a widely used indicator of being fresh and eatable.
The sensors cost two US cents each to make. Known as “paper-based electrical gas sensors (PEGS)”, they detect spoilage gases like ammonia (a poisonous gas with a strong unpleasant smell) in meat and fish products. The information provided by the electronic nose is received by a smart phone, and then you can know whether the food is fresh and safe to eat.
The Imperial College London researchers who developed PEGS made the sensors by printing carbon electrodes onto a special type of paper. The materials are eco-friendly and harmless, so they don’t damage the environment and are safe to use in food packaging. The sensors, combined with a tiny electronic system, then inform nearby mobile devices, which identify and understand the data about spoilage gases.
Lead author Dr Firat Guder of Imperial’s Department of Bioengineering, said, “Although they’re designed to keep us safe, use-by dates can lead to eatable food being thrown away. They don’t always reflect its actual freshness. In fact, people often get sick from food-borne diseases due to poor storage, even when an item is within its use-by date.”
“These sensors are cheap enough so we hope to see supermarkets using them within three years. Our goal is to use PEGS in food packaging to reduce unnecessary food waste.”
The authors hope that PEGS could have applications beyond food processing, like sensing chemicals in agriculture, air quality, and detecting disease markers in breath like those involved in kidney disease.
12. What is the function of PEGS according to the text?
A. To improve the taste of foods. B. To improve the service of stores.
C To help supermarkets store foods. D. To help people test food freshness.
13. What role does the smartphone play while PEGS are functioning?
A. It acts as an electronic nose. B. It reads the data collected by PEGS.
C. It helps print the gas sensors onto paper. D. It discovers the spoilage gases from foods.
14. What does Dr. Firat Guder say about use-by dates?
A. They are not completely reliable. B. They can help reduce food waste.
C. They are based on scientific research. D. They are not accepted by the consumers.
15. What does the author mainly talk about in the text?
A. The process of researching spoilage sensors.
B. A new technology in packaging to reduce food waste.
C. The application of spoilage sensors beyond food processing.
D. The influence of use-by dates on supermarkets and consumers.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. B

“Is this allIgot?” asked my daughter, Allison. “I asked for a new cellphone!”
“What kind of birthday is this?” asked my son, Blake.
Blake and Allison are twins. Every year, I gave them birthday presents. But they always felt unhappy about not receiving something on their wish list.
I knew I had somewhat spoiled(宠坏)them, but I had no idea it was this bad . I was in shock. How self-centered and unappreciative could my children be?
I was determined to do something.
I found a family living on a farm that badly needed help. There were four children in the family aged from three to eight. I began to visit them every two months.
Soon, Allison and Blake’s birthday was drawing near. I decided to introduce them to the new friends. One day, I woke the kids early and drove them to the farm.
When we arrived, I told my children to take two bags off the car, of which one was filled with food and the other with many boxes full of presents my children would never be satisfied with.
We were welcomed inside with smiles and appreciation. Obviously, Alison and Blake were shocked by what they saw. I could guess they had never expected people would live such a difficult life.
“Look! Presents for you. ”Allison was trying to make the kids happier.
With their parents’ permission(允许), the kids began to pick the boxes up, shake them, and guess what was inside. They were so excited. Allison and Blake encouraged the kids to open the boxes. They did. And there were shouts of surprise and joy: a model car, chocolate …then laughter. Then grateful hugs(拥抱)and sincere “thank-yous” .
At first Alison and Blake looked confused but soon joined the children. Before long, they were laughing, too, proud that they brought happiness there.
On the way home, Alison and Blake were a little quiet. When it was time to go to bed that day, my kids hugged me and said, “Thank you, Mum. ”

【答案】[参考范文]
The next year, with their birthday nearing, I asked Alison and Blake what presents they wanted. Alison and Blake exchanged a glance and said, “Mum, we want something special this time. ”They asked for my permission to shop the presents themselves. Strange as it sounded, I nodded. So on that special day, we visited the supermarket together. To my surprise, they chose items I had never expected:shoes, gloves, pens … I sensed something unusual. With everything ready, Alison asked whether they could celebrate their birthday with our new friends together.
I agreed and offered to drive them to the farm. I reminded them to call their friends first. After that we headed for our destination. The moment we arrived, the whole family rushed to meet us. My children got all the bags into the house, opened them, and unfolded all the gifts. It was then that our friends learned all Alison and Blake brought were gifts for them. Seeing the various gifts, they were moved to tears. I realized my children would never be selfish and unappreciative again.
