During the epidemic, if companies plan to get workers back into the office, finding ways to keep social distancing will be key. PointGrab, an Israeli company, thinks it can help, using smart sensors set on workplace ceilings.
PointGrab developed its technology before the epidemic to help workspace managers best use office space. About the size of a smoke alarm, the sensors can record the exact number and location of people in buildings including offices, hotels and restaurants.
One of the company’s first customers was Deloitte, which used the system at its London office last year. PointGrab’s sensors were connected to screens in the building to show the availability of desks and shared areas in real time. PointGrab CEO Doron Shachar says it was the smart sensors that allowed 30% more people to work in 3% less space.
Now PointGrab has adapted the technology so the sensors can also monitor social distancing by keeping way of how far apart people are, and whether they’re traveling in one direction around a building. Also, workspace managers can set up alerts for when two people are closer than two meters for more than 30 seconds, for example.
The sensors have been included in the “six feet office” concept created by services company Cushman and Wakefield to encourage employees to practice social distancing. They are using in this way at a university in the Netherlands, and at a creation center in Belgium.
Although the social distancing creation is new, PointGrab has set up more than 10,000 sensors for better using workspace, including in the offices of Coca-Cola, Facebook and Dell.
Workers might not like the idea of being monitored, but PointGrab says no images or identifying features are recorded Instead, each employee is shown as an unknown point on a screen.
“The sensor does not give people’s privacy away,” Shachar says. “This is extremely important in the workspace.”
1.According to the passage, the smart sensor ________.
A.is larger than the size of a smoke alarm B.should be set on the gate of a workplace
C.can be seen in offices, hotels and restaurants D.is designed by an American service company

A.To explain where the sensors were connected.
B.To present the great influence of the sensors.
C.To show more room can be brought by sensors.
D.To stress it was the first company using the sensors.
3.According to the passage, the alert will ring in an office when ________.
A.a worker stands too close to another one B.two workers are traveling in one direction
C.workers have an one-hour online meeting D.workers shake hands for over half a minute

A recent study has found that being exposed to low temperatures creates more good fat which burns calories in the body. Being cold imitates the effects of exercise, protecting against obesity and improving health. The researchers have discovered that exposure to cold changes the make-up of gut bacteria, which can lead to fat-burning, improve glucose metabolism, and reduce body weight.
While ordinary white fat, known as bad fat, piles on when we eat more calories than we burn, brown fat seems to burn extra calories to produce heat. Babies have lots of brown fat — they need it to keep warm — but there are small amounts in the necks of adults, too. Studies have shown that staying in a cold environment can accelerate the formation of more brown fat in the body.
Researchers predict the health benefits of being exposed to cold may be linked to gut bacteria. They exposed the first group of mice to cold temperature of 6℃ for up to 10 days and discovered this caused a major shift in the make-up of the mice’s gut microbes, preventing the mice from gaining weight.
Then, the gut bacteria were transplanted into the second group of mice that did not have the gut microbes. It was found that they improved glucose metabolism and increased tolerance to cold temperatures. The mice also lost weight as the changes in gut bacteria promoted the formation of brown fat. However, after three weeks of cold exposure, the body weight began to remain stable.
Professor Mirko Trajkovski of the University of Geneva claims that they provide powerful evidence that gut microbes play a key role in people’s ability to adapt to the environment. They are excited about testing whether targeting gut microbes could be a promising approach for preventing obesity and related conditions.
5.What’s the new finding of a recent study?
A.Good fat has nothing to do with calories. B.Exercise can make people become fat.
C.Being cold helps people lose weight. D.Gut bacteria will stop glucose metabolism.
6.What do we know about the brown fat?
A.It’s usually considered as bad fat. B.It will fail to produce in cold bodies.
C.It can’t be found in the bodies of adults. D.It burns more calories in low temperatures.
7.With the gut bacteria, the second group of mice ________.
A.kept losing weight continually B.had much less brown fat in the cold
C.got better ability to stand the cold D.produced more gut microbes in the body

    一.任务型阅读
In the United States, every high school student gets a locker in the school hallway. They put their books, personal things and sports equipment in it.
However, it seems that lockers aren’t so popular anymore at one US high school. At Stevenson High School in Illinois, students might not use them all year round. Now they store things like books on iPads. The school has a new policy to encourage students to use lockers. Students can decide if they will use lockers or keep things themselves. The school has about 4,500 lockers in different hallways more than its 4,190 students.
In fact, many factors led to the decreased(减少的)usage of lockers. About five years ago, the school started handing out iPads to lighten the loads of student backpacks. Also, some students think it is not convenient to use lockers. The hallways are too crowded to find their own lockers.
Nearly half of the students at the school have applied for lockers this semester. The school is able to give each student a location in the hallway of his or her choice. Some students wanted a locker along their morning way from the parking area. Others wanted it on the way to their practice or rehearsal(排练)so they can put their things away more easily.
The school will end the least popular hallways and remove some lockers there. Meanwhile, more and more lockers appear which are suitable for students to store musical instruments and oversized sports equipment.

    【文章大意】
    本文是一篇说明文。向我们介绍美国学生使用储物柜的情况。
    【解析】

1.根据“They put their books, personal things and sports equipment in it.”可知,他们把他们的书,个人物品和运动器材放在里面。这是储物柜被用来做的事情,故填used。
2.根据“About five years ago, the school started handing out iPads to lighten the loads of student backpacks.”可知,大约五年前,学校开始发放iPad,以减轻学生书包的负担。也就是用iPads代替书本,故填instead。
3.根据“Students can decide if they will use lockers or keep things themselves.”可知,学生可以决定是使用储物柜还是自己保管东西。此处表示是否,此后加不定式,故填whether。
4.根据“The school is able to give each student a location in the hallway of his or her choice.”可知,学校可以给每个学生自己选择的走廊位置。allow sb to do sth“允许某人做某事”,使用动词原形,故填choose。
5.根据“Meanwhile, more and more lockers appear which are suitable for students to store musical instruments and oversized sports equipment.”可知,越来越多的储物柜出现,适合学生存放乐器和超大的运动器材。也就是说储物柜变得越来越大,故填bigger/larger。
