    I have trouble with phrasal verbs. There are so many of them and it seems impossible to work out the meanings just from the words. And some of the verbs have different meanings. For example, put off can mean postpone, discourage (someone from doing something), and make someone dislike (something). I try to use phrasal verbs sometimes, but I usually use the wrong one!

    My classmates had some suggestions for me. One was to use flash cards and to write down the phrasal verb on one side and a sentence using the phrasal verb on the other side. Then I can study them when I have time, like on the bus. Another suggestion was to use the phrasal verb in a sentence that is true for me, so that it's easy to remember. For example, I always put off doing my homework. I think my classmates gave me some good advice. Next time I hear a phrasal verb, I’ll write it down and think of a sentence that uses the verb. Maybe I’ll draw a picture too, to make it easier to remember.

    I can never quite get the main idea. Any advice?
    这是英语口语中的常用表达,句中never quite get sth意指说话人往往能听懂部分词句,但不敢保证完全听明白了。这种表达的另一种近似说法为can’t always quite get sth。

    Any advice?是一个省略句,其完整形式是 Have you got any advice?” 或 “Do you have any advice?。这里的网络留言是非正式文体,所以作者使用了口语中常见的省略句形式。

    句中bridge作动词,表示“减小、消除两者间的隔阂、鸿沟或分歧”。

    2. demand n. 要求;需求
    vt. 强烈要求;需要
    vi. 查问
    demand后接宾语从句时,从句谓语一般要用虚拟语气,即“should+动词原形”,should可以省略。

    demand一般指理直气壮地提出强烈要求,或坚持不让对方拒绝的要求。

    request正式用词,有礼貌的请求或恳求,多含担心因总总原因对方不能答应的意味。

    require强调根据事业、需要或纪律、法律等而提出的要求。
