The Best Destinations to Visit in 2023
    Poland
We could list new openings in Poland, such as Hotel Verte in Warsaw, which will throw open its golden doors in August. But this is not the only reason you should visit Poland in 2023. Sharing a 300-plus-mile border with its neighboring countries, where there are forests, lakes and mountains, means now it's your chance to take a vacation there.
    Western Australia
On April 20, 2023, a total solar eclipse(日食) will be visible over the northwestern edge of Australia. For an event that will likely last about one minute, the town of Exmouth has been planning for over a year. There will be outdoor viewing platforms where observers can safely watch the solar miracle.
    Liverpool, England
Best known around the world as the birthplace of The Beatles, Liverpool is adding another chapter to its musical legacy. In May, it will be the host city of Eurovision Song Contest 2023, which is expected to bring thousands of flag-waving fans from across the continent. In June, the city will celebrate the Liverpool Biennial contemporary visual arts festival, as more than 30 international artists and collectives takeover spaces in the city until September.
    Charleston, South Carolina
Charleston shows its past like no other US city, but it often glosses over(掩饰) the history of its Black residents. It has been taking steps to fix that. Enter the International African American Museum, which promises to make an opening announcement soon for 2023 after pushing back its January date. The museum is on the shoreline of the Cooper River in the spot where many Africans first set foot in North America.
21、When will Hotel Verte open this year?
    A. In April. B. In May. C. In June. D. In August.
22、Which city will host Eurovision Song Contest 2023?
    A. Warsaw. B. Exmouth. C. Liverpool. D. Charleston.
23、What can you explore in the museum on the shoreline of the Cooper River?

    C. The achievements of The Beatles. D. The works by international artists.
Last summer, I was assigned to take photos that could communicate the urgency of climate change in northern Canada. When I arrived at an abandoned village on Resolute Bay, I scanned the shore with my camera. Suddenly, I spotted a bear lying on the ground. It didn't move for almost an hour. But when it finally stood up, I had to catch my breath. The bear's once strong body was just skin and bones; every step that it took was painfully slow.
When I posted the photos on social media, I wrote, "This is what starvation may look like. I wonder whether the global population of 25,000 polar bears would die the way this bear is dying."
I did not say that this particular bear was killed by climate change. But news organizations around the world focused on it. The first line of the story published in National Geographic read, "This is what climate change looks like"—with "climate change" highlighted in yellow. Other news agencies even adopted more dramatic headlines.
It was estimated that my photos had been read by about 2.5 billion people around the world. But there was a problem: Most people and the news agencies didn't pick up or misunderstood the real message I tried to send with them. Many people expressed gratitude that I'd provided shocking evidence on climate change, while others who are still trying to deny the existence of climate change accused me of spreading false information.
Perhaps I had made a mistake in not telling the full story—that I was looking for pictures that might foretell the future and that I didn't know what had happened to this particular polar bear.
I can't say that this bear was starving because of climate change, but I am happy that my photos have moved the conversation about climate change to the forefront, where it must remain until this problem is solved.
Until then, when I come across a scene like this one, I will again share with the world—and take pains to be sure that my intention is clear.
24、How did the author feel when the bear stood up?
    A. Shocked. B. Scared. C.Amazed. D. Relieved.
25、What does the underlined word "it" in paragraph 3 refer to?
    A. The story. B. The photo. C.A starving bear. D. Climate change.
26、What did the author really want to do when sharing those photos?
    A. Provide more direct evidence on climate change.
    B. Show the link between the bear and climate change.
C.Warn the possible consequences of climate change.
    D. Expose the false information about climate change.
27、What is the author's main purpose in writing the text?
    A. To admit his mistake. B.To clarify his true intention.
    C. To please his readers. D. To show off his amazing trip.
Simple household chores(家务) could help prevent dementia(痴呆症) by boosting our brain size, a new study claims. Canadian scientists found older adults who spent more time on household chores showed greater brain size—a strong predictor of cognitive(认知) health. These chores-including cleaning, tidying, cooking, heavy housework and gardening—could all give the human brain a workout and prevent the condition.
“Scientists already know that exercise has a positive impact on the brain, but our study is the first to show that the same maybe true for household chores,” said study author Noah Koblinsky at Rotman Research Institute (RRI) at Baycrest in Toronto, Canada. “Highlighting the benefits of household chores may motivate older adults to be more active by providing a more realistic, low risk form of physical activity.”
The researchers looked at the links between household chores, brain volume and cognition in a group of 66 cognitively healthy older adults between 65 and 85 years of age. The participants attended three assessment visits at Baycrest Hospital in Toronto, including a health evaluation, structural brain imaging and cognitive assessment. They were asked about the time they spent on household chores, such as tidying, dusting, meal preparation and clean-up, shopping, heavy housework, gardening and yard work, home repairs and care-giving.
The researchers found that older adults who spent more time engaging in such activities had greater brain volume,,regardless of how much they engaged in any form of physical exercise, such as running. As a next step, the researchers would like to assess household physical activity more objectively using wearable technology. With additional funding, they could also plan controlled trials with the aim of increasing individuals' household activity and studying brain changes over time.
28、How does housework prevent dementia according to the new study?
    A. By allowing the brain to rest. B. By increasing brain volume.
    C. By monitoring daily activities. D. By predicting cognitive health.
29、What can we learn from Koblinsky's words?
    A. The old people seldom want to do housework.
    B. Exercise has little positive impact on the brain.
    C. Doing household chores is risky for old people.
    D. The new study may encourage the old to do housework.
30、What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the research?
    A. Its finding. B. Its purpose. C. Its process. D. Its significance.
31、What can be inferred about the researchers from the last paragraph?
    A. They want to improve their research.
    B. They lack necessary financial support.
    C. They refuse to organize controlled trials.
    D. They consider wearable technology worthless.
Music first or language? If you think about it, the spoken word has a sort of musicality to it. The way we pronounce, our voice changes, our word choices, and even the volume and speed at which we speak all have a musical effect.
In the scholarly paper Music and Early Language Acquisition(获得), researchers attempted to prove that in order to speak, people must first have an understanding of music. The authors argue that spoken language should be described as “a special type of music”.
By these standards, music is not a pointless part of life at all; it is necessary to all communication between humans. The researchers go on to point out that our brains process language musically, so there is much to be said of studying music alongside language, and at a very young age.
According to professor of theory and music composition Anthony Brandt, children as young as newborns have a basic understanding of music. In an interview with Medical News Today, Brandt said that the sounds of language, not the meaning of it, are what infants(婴儿)first learn. It is later on that they are able to associate those sounds with what they mean. Brandt, who co-authored the research paper mentioned above, said that newborns can break down parts of sound like tone and rhythm(节奏) .Therefore, exposure to music trains babies' brains for language comprehension and the art of speaking.
Brandt and his co-authors also found that infants cannot really tell what their native language is when compared to other languages, and the same is true with music. Once a baby has reached that one-year mark, he or she will start to distinguish the speech and music that are most closely associated with their own family and society. “This is why exposing infants to several languages and types of music is so important,” Brandt said, “The more sounds they hear, the wider their base of understanding of sounds, language and music as they grow older.”
32、What phenomenon is described about spoken language in the first paragraph?
    A. It is used to compose popular songs.
    B. It is convenient for daily interactions.
    C. It differs greatly from written language.
    D. It has something in common with music.
33、Which of the following is Brandt's idea?
    A. Our brains process language in a musical way.
    B. Newborns have no basic understanding of music.
    C. Music is unnecessary for human communication.
    D. It is hard for babies to breakdown parts of sound.
34、What may Brandt suggest people do?
    A. Play games with one-year old babies.
    B. Expose infants to languages and music.
    C. Tell newborns what their mother tongue is.
    D. Ask babies to distinguish speech and music
35、Which is the most suitable title for the text?
    A. Music Is a Universal Language
    B. The Development of Spoken Language
    C. Music Helps Language Learning
    D. The Differences Between Music and Language

I clearly remember the first time I played a computer game. I was seven years old. My friend had gotten a computer for his birthday. He invited me to play a game, which was very simple by today's standards, but we loved it! We played for hours. We would meet after school every day to play it. My addiction to computer games started then. Not long after that,my friend moved to the city. I missed him, but I got my own computer and began playing by myself.
Over the years, computer games developed rapidly. Technology improved, and there were always new and better games to play. You could then play games over the Internet with people from all over the world, using either computers or smartphones. The online games were fascinating and it was always exciting to play.
At first, I played games over the Internet after I had done my homework and eaten dinner. Then I started playing as soon as I got home each day. My parents stopped me, so I started playing it in the middle of the night. I went to school and often fell asleep in class. My teacher would scold me but I would often do the same thing the next day! Shortly after that, I began to skip meals and play through the night. My parents found out and took away my computer and smartphone. I knew I had gone too far. My love of computer games had become an addiction. It was affecting my schoolwork and my health, and I felt quite depressed.

    16、答案:B
    17、答案:C
解析:W: Well, Mr Smith, we have had an interesting discussion about your work. Now, tell us something about your after-work activities.
M: I guess not much different from everyone else. I'm interested in sports, and I run about 3 miles every day. I particularly enjoy cross-country running, where you have to run across fields, jump over streams and so on. While I'm running I think about all sorts of things, and at the end of a run I'm always surprised to find that I've managed to solve a problem that was on my mind. Next year I’m going to try the London Marathon. It's a long, hard race—26 miles, or 42 kilometers—and you have to be tough to finish, but I want to do it very much. I worry a bit about getting old, and I'd like to prove to myself that I’m still almost as fit as I was twenty years ago.
I'm interested in climbing as well as running. I'll never become an expert climber, but I know what I'm doing in the mountains. I successfully completed a course in snow and ice climbing when I was younger, and I've done a series of easy climbs in the Alps during the last few years. My wife doesn't share my interest in mountains. She agreed to go climbing with me once, but she found that she felt ill as soon as she got above 1, 000 meters, so we decide to follow different hobbies.

    53、答案:Dear Aunt Joan,
How are you? You asked how I was doing, so let me tell you about my life here.
As you know, I've been in China for around a month now. I want to study in a local university, which is why I took those after-school Chinese classes. I decided on China because it's a fast-developing country with trade links all over the world. Studying here could be useful in finding a good job in trade or business. What's more, there's a lot of traditional culture still alive in China. The parks are full of people playing traditional instruments, playing Chinese chess, and even writing calligraphy on the ground with giant paintbrushes!
I love China! I hope you can visit China someday.
    Yours,
    Jim
54、答案:Then one day I met my friend by chance again! He had moved back to our hometown. We hadn't seen each other for ages. He looked happy and healthy. We talked about the past and the good times we had, playing that old game. He still played computer games, but he also did many other things. He invited me to play basketball with some friends. I got tired quickly, but I loved it! Afterwards, we played a board game. We laughed and talked and played for hours. It was very sociable and great fun. Playing games with my friends in real life was much more enjoyable than doing so online.
Computer games are great fun and I still play them sometimes. New technology is making more amazing things possible. I've learnt that some games can event each us to train our brains to solve problems. However, games can also be addictive, so balance is important for a healthy lifestyle. We can spoil good things by doing them too much. Now I enjoy playing games even more because I am able to maintain a good balance between work and play.
