How important has Internet become in our lives? The Pew Research Center conducted a survey to celebrate the Web’s 25th birthday. The researchers were greatly heartened by what they found.
“In 2006, only 14 percent of American adults used Internet. Today, it’s 87 percent,” said Lee Rainie, the director of the Pew Research Center’s Internet Project. “It is what has impressed us the most.”
The survey also showed that 70 percent of the Internet users have been treated kindly or generously online, while 25 percent of respondents said they have been treated unkindly. More than half—56 percent—of users said they’ve seen an online community come together to help someone solve a problem. 25 percent said they’ve left an online group because members were too unpleasant.
When Pew asked questions about whether being online has enriched people’s relationships—or not—the results were very positive: 67 percent of Internet users said their online communication with family and friends has generally strengthened those relationships. Only 18 percent said it has generally weakened those relationships.
According to the survey, 53 percent of Internet users said Internet has become the hardest tech tool to give up. It is 15 percent higher than the result of a similar survey conducted in 2006. In fact, more people said they would have a harder time stopping using Internet than giving up TV. (These days, so much great television streams across the Internet that it makes sense.)
“In our survey, we have found that the Web makes a few people very unhappy. There’s strong evidence pointing to the fact that Internet users tend to compare their daily lives with the ‘highlight moments’ of their friends’ lives,” said Lee Rainie. “It’s really silly.”
24.Which is the most impressive result of the latest survey?
A.Users’ dependence on Internet. B.The fast growth of Internet users.
C.The kindness of online communities. D.The strengthened family relationships.
25.How many participants found it the hardest to give up Internet in 2006?
A.15%. B.38%. C.53%. D.68%.
26.What message does Lee Rainie seem to convey in the last paragraph?
A.Online depression cannot be avoided. B.Don’t show off in online communities.
C.Don’t make unnecessary comparison. D.Copy your friends’ wonderful lifestyles.
27.How do the researchers feel about the results of the survey?
A.Optimistic. B.Worried. C.Unconcerned. D.Doubtful.
A growing demand for turtles(乌龟) as pets in the United States, Asia, and Europe has led to a rise in poaching. Poaching means to catch or kill an animal illegally. Wildlife trade experts believe the rise in poaching is adding to the worldwide drop in rare freshwater turtles. Such concerns have led to proposals to increase protection for freshwater turtles.
More than 180 nations have gathered this week in Panama as part of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, or CITES.
Tara Easter, a doctoral student, studies the trade. She looked at turtle trade data from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. She found that the business export trade for mud turtles in the United States increased from 1,844 in 1999 to nearly 40,000 in 2017 and that the trade in musk turtles increased from 8,254 in 1999 to more than 281,000 in 2016.
The United States and several Latin American countries have suggested stopping or limiting the trade in more than 20 turtle species. In their CITES proposal, the countries included data from Mexico that found nearly 20,000 were confiscated from 2010 to 2022. To confiscate means to take something away from someone to carry out laws or rules.
The illegal trade has also led governments to suggest listing for the first time 42 turtle species under CITES, including North American musk turtles. A listing means traders will need permits to sell them internationally.
Matthew Strickler is with the U.S. Department of the Interior. He is heading the American group at the CITES meeting in Panama. He called the possible listings and increased protection for North American turtles “really, really important”.
“We’ve seen this pattern of turtles being depleted in one place, and then poachers and traders moving to another place,” Strickler said. “Southeast Asia was depleted. They moved to Africa. Now, we see them moving to the Americas.”
28.What is the real cause of the drop in the turtle population?
A.Hunting them for their medical value. B.The pollution of freshwater.
C.Humans’ keeping them as pets. D.Their homes being destroyed.
29.What do we know from Tara Easter’s study?
A.Turtle trade grew rapidly. B.Turtles were well protected.
C.Turtles grow more and more popular. D.Mud turtles were liked better than musk turtles.
30.What does listing some species under CITES mean?
A.Allowing selling them freely. B.Limiting the trade in them internationally.
C.Hunting them by law. D.Canceling international wildlife trade.
31.What does the underlined word “depleted” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.Fed. B.Reduced. C.Joined. D.Protected.
The American space agency NASA says a spacecraft has entered the sun’s outermost atmosphere for the first time. Scientists announced that Parker Solar Probe traveled through the solar atmosphere’s outer edge, known as the corona (日冕). They described the entry as a successful touch on the sun.
Unlike Earth, the sun does not have a solid surface. Instead, it is a superheated ball of material held together by gravity and magnetic (磁的) forces. The temperature of the corona is so high that the sun’s gravity cannot hold on to it and some solar material escapes from it and goes into space, which causes the solar wind. The solar wind is the flow of charged pieces, known as plasma.
Parker Solar Probe was launched in 2018 which mainly studied the solar wind. The sun is actually a magnetic variable star with solar activity happening nearly periodically. Scientists said being able to study the solar wind and the corona close up could help them better understand “the way the activity causes changes to the planet we live on”.
“We can actually see the spacecraft flying through the coronal structure during a total solar eclipse (日全食),” Nour Raouafi, the project scientist, said, adding that it took them a few months to examine information from the spacecraft and to confirm the result and that the evidence used included data on magnetic fields and the solar wind, as well as images. Scientists reported Parker Solar Probe successfully went in and out of the corona at least three times.
The Parker team said early data also suggested the spacecraft may have entered the corona during its ninth close approach in August, but a further study is needed to make a confirmation. The spacecraft is expected to keep getting closer to the sun and diving deeper into the corona until its final orbit, planned for 2025.
32.What do we know about the solar wind from the text?
A.It affects the corona’s temperature. B.It functions as the surface of the sun.
C.It is caused by magnetic forces. D.It comes from the sun’s outer atmosphere.
33.Why did NASA launch Parker Solar Probe?
A.To find out why solar activity happens.
B.To know how solar activity influences Earth.
C.To get more evidence of the solar wind.
D.To take measures to control the solar wind.
34.What are the scientists’ attitude to their findings?
A.Confused. B.Doubtful. C.Cautious. D.Favorable.
35.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Spacecraft Touches the Sun for the First Time
B.Parker Uncovers the Secrets of the Solar Wind
C.NASA Brought New Discoveries about the Sun
D.Parker Is Designed to Reach the Sun in 2025
We often try to save money for a variety of different reasons. 36 Learning how to save is important, but a recent study showed that over half of all 22~29-year-olds living in the UK have no savings at all. Did they max out on too many things, or are there other factors? And how can we become better savers?
First, put a stop to those impulse buys (冲动购物) . 37 Impulse buys are done in the heat of the moment and without thought for what it’s costing you. Encouraging yourself to question your purchase before you buy allows you to process what you are doing.
38 Withdraw cash before you go to a restaurant or shopping and set a fixed budget you must stick to. Also, any change that comes from your transactions when you’re using cash can be put in jar and deposited into your account.
Finally, be disciplined. 39 It’s about sticking to it, too. You shouldn’t be dipping into your savings every time you feel like it. Setting up a standing order from your current account into your savings the moment you receive your salary will ensure you keep up the habit. Successful savers stick to their plans and watch the money pile up.
Just as the old saying goes: “A penny saved is a penny earned.” 40
A.It might be to save up for a new computer or put money aside into a rainy-day fund.
B.Ask about discounts and pay in cash.
C.It’s not just about creating that budget.
D.Sometimes, saving money can be difficult.
E.Another way is to use cash rather than card.
F.Ask yourself if you really need to buy something.
G.These are some of the actions we can take to help us all become better savers.

Musical instruments in China were traditionally classified (分类)into eight groups, according to the materials 56 were used to create them. 57 eight material groups were metal, stone, silk, bamboo, gourd, clay, skin and wood.
Bamboo instruments 58 (main) refer to woodwind (木管乐器) such as Sheng, Dizi and Xiao. Zhong, Luo and Bo are good 59 (example) of metal instruments. Silk instruments are mostly stringed instruments since silk is the material to string the instrument. A seven-stringed instrument, called Gugin, is one of the 60 (early) stringed instruments in China. Today, it 61 (remain) quite popular. Here's an example of a famous Guqin master, Prof. Li Xiangting, 62 (perform) a classical work Flowing Water on Guqin. Instruments, which might seem part 63 the same family in the Western tradition, have different classifications in the Chinese tradition. For example, a percussion (打击)instrument made with skin, like Dagu (a large drum played with sticks) is in one group, while Fou (clay pot hit with a single stick) is in another.
Modern Chinese orchestras 64 (organize) along the same lines as Western orchestras in terms of group and seating arrangements of the instruments. The difference lies in the instruments being played. So a Chinese orchestra has a woodwind and strings section, 65 you'll hardly find oboes(双簧管) or violins.

Lily loved school. However, there was one class Lily worried about more than any other—art. She didn’t know why she just wasn’t any good at drawing, painting, or cutting.
Ms. Clay, the art teacher, stood at the front of the room. “Class, next Friday our school is going to have an art competition,” she announced. Ms. Clay was a great teacher, and Lily liked her a lot. But this announcement made Lily nervous. “Everyone in the school will create a piece of artwork to show in the library. You can use the different types of artwork we have been studying.” Ms. Clay was quite excited when she spoke while Lily found herself sinking lower in her chair.
Lily had the whole weekend to work on her project, but she could not think of anything to do. On Monday, Lily felt frightened, so after school Lily asked Ms. Clay if she could write an art paper instead of doing an art project.
“I understand this project scared you, Lily,” Ms. Clay said. “Just remember, you can create any kind of art you want.” Ms. Clay smiled at her. “Art is a person’s way of expressing his or her feelings—it isn’t always painting, drawing, or cutting. I know you will think of something very creative, and I can’t wait to see it.”
When Lily arrived home, she took out a piece of paper and a pencil. She remembered Ms. Clay’s words. “Art is a person’s way of expressing his or her feelings.” Lily wrote the word “terrified” on her paper. She crumpled (揉皱) the paper and threw it to the side of her desk.
Then Lily stared at the crumpled ball. Suddenly an idea struck her.
Paragraph 1:
Why not create something out of crumpled paper?

Hi, everyone! This is the monthly meeting of our club. We’ve been lucky to have got good advice from some famous athletes on how to improve our skills and build up our body. Today, we’ll hear something different. We’re honored to have Emma Wilson here. Emma is a health expert and lecturer from UBC, the University of British Columbia. Emma worked for a football team in Manchester, then for a very successful rugby team in Dublin, and finally ended up working here in Vancouver. Emma says it’s challenging to be a health expert because people can be easily influenced by advertisements that lack scientific support. Also, people aren’t willing to change their views about food and nutrition, as there is so much confusing information online. It’s really important to hear what experts say, and that’s why we’ve invited Emma here. She isn’t going to tell us about everything we should eat, but she will teach us to make better choices. Let’s welcome Emma Wilson.

根据第三段“She found that the business export trade for mud turtles in the United States increased from 1,844 in 1999 to nearly 40,000 in 2017 and that the trade in musk turtles increased from 8,254 in 1999 to more than 281,000 in 2016(她发现,美国泥龟的商业出口贸易从1999年的1844只增加到2017年的近40000只,麝香龟的贸易从1999的8254只增长到2016年的281000多只)”可知,塔拉·伊斯特的研究发现海龟贸易快速增长,故选A项。

根据第一段的“The American space agency NASA says a spacecraft has entered the sun’s outermost atmosphere for the first time. Scientists announced that Parker Solar Probe traveled through the solar atmosphere’s outer edge, known as the corona (日冕).(美国宇航局称一艘宇宙飞船首次进入太阳最外层大气层。科学家们宣布,帕克太阳探测器穿过了太阳大气的外缘,也就是日冕。)”和第二段的“The temperature of the corona is so high that the sun’s gravity cannot hold on to it and some solar material escapes from it and goes into space, which causes the solar wind.(日冕的温度很高,太阳的引力无法抓住它,一些太阳物质从日冕逃逸到太空中,这就造成了太阳风。)”
根据第三段的“Parker Solar Probe was launched in 2018 which mainly studied the solar wind. The sun is actually a magnetic variable star with solar activity happening nearly periodically. Scientists said being able to study the solar wind and the corona close up could help them better understand “the way the activity causes changes to the planet we live on”(帕克太阳探测器于2018年发射,主要研究太阳风。太阳实际上是一颗磁变星,太阳活动几乎周期性地发生。科学家们表示,能够近距离研究太阳风和日冕,可以帮助他们更好地理解“太阳风活动对我们生活的星球造成的变化方式”。)”可知,“帕克太阳探测器”主要研究太阳风,以帮助科学家更好地了解太阳活动如何影响我们的地球。故选B。
34.推理判断题。根据第四段的“it took them a few months to examine information from the spacecraft and to confirm the result and that the evidence used included data on magnetic fields and the solar wind, as well as images(他们花了几个月的时间来检查来自航天器的信息,并确认结果,所用的证据包括磁场和太阳风的数据,以及图像)”和第五段的“but a further study is needed to make a confirmation(但还需要进一步的研究来证实)”可知,科学家们花费数月时间检查来自航天器的信息并确认结果,并且认为需要开展新研究以确认“帕克太阳探测器”在8月份是否进入日冕。
通读全文尤其是根据第一段“The American space agency NASA says a spacecraft has entered the sun’s outermost atmosphere for the first time. Scientists announced that Parker Solar Probe traveled through the solar atmosphere’s outer edge, known as the corona (日冕). They described the entry as a successful touch on the sun.(美国宇航局称一艘宇宙飞船首次进入太阳最外层大气层。科学家们宣布,帕克太阳探测器穿过了太阳大气的外缘,也就是日冕。他们称这次进入是一次成功的太阳之旅。)”可知,本文主要介绍了美国国家航空航天局的“帕克太阳探测器”首次近距离接近太阳,故A项“Spacecraft Touches the Sun for the First Time(宇宙飞船首次接触太阳)”作标题最佳。故选A。

67.Why not create something out of crumpled paper? The crumpled paper reminded her of a snowball. Lily didn’t have to draw or paint or even cut. Lily made many paper balls, glued them all together, and placed them on a big piece of hard paper to form a snowman. The snowman wore a hat made of black paper and a scarf made of red paper. Her finished project was really wonderful.
On Friday, Lily carefully carried her project into the library. She noticed the smile and the nods from teachers and other students as she put her work on a table. Ms. Clay walked over to Lily. “You have created a creative piece of artwork. I am so proud of you!” Ms. Clay said. Lily was proud of herself too. Her pride grew when Ms. Clay placed a first-place star on her artwork. “Maybe I am a good artist after all,” Lily thought.
