Pet adoption is the perfect way to add a new family member. But if a pet is too young to be adopted, it must be fostered (寄养) first. That’s how a puppy named Maggie that was rescued by the North Shore Animal League America (NSALA), ended up being fostered by a sweet six-year-old boy.
The animal rescue organization in Port Washington needed to find a foster home for Maggie because she needed to be trained with basic obedience (顺从) skills and to become comfortable with a home environment. NSALA put out a call for a foster family.
Roman Duncan’s family was the lucky one chosen for the job. The boy fell in love with the puppy and was able to be part of her growth during those formative months. The family always made it clear to Roman that Maggie would eventually be adopted and move to a different home.
When it came time for Maggie to be adopted Roman couldn’t hold his tears. He decided to write letters to the puppy’s future family. He wrote letters about his furry friend, saying ”Maggie is so cute and loves to play fetch. She is the best dog ever, ” and slipped the notes and some photos into Maggie’s paperwork.
The rescue team were surprised and then incredibly touched by the notes they found when opening Maggie’s file. NSALA made sure that Roman’s notes reached her adopted family. The boy’s gesture is exactly what pet fostering is about.
A dog or cat that has gone through terrible sufferings such as being abusing needs to learn what it means to live in a home. Fostering helps reduce the animal’s stress and makes it trust people again. It is also an opportunity for people who love pets but can’t have them full-time due to some restrictions. Pet fosters can get to enjoy helping a pet in need. If you are interested in pet fostering, contact a local shelter or animal rescue near you.
    24. What happened to Maggie at first?
    A. She was released into the wild B. She was settled in a new home.
    C. She was saved by a rescue team D. She was fostered by Roman’s family.
    25. Why did Roman write notes about Maggie?
    A. To express his mixed feelings B. To preserve Maggie’s paperwork.
    C. To choose Maggie’s future family. D. To help Maggie adapt to new home.
    26. What is mainly discussed in the last paragraph?
A The benefits of pet fostering B. The access to fostering a pet.
    C. A homeless animal’s barriers D. The restrictions to adopting a pet.
    27. What is the best title of the text?
    A. Maggie Lives Happily in a Comforting Foster Home
    B. A Boy Writes Sweet Letter to Puppy’s Forever Family
    C. Pet fostering Plays Great Roles in Rescuing Lost Animals
    D. Roman Duncan’s Family Adopts a new Family Member

One of the greatest sources of concern for Alaina Castillo has been the letter R.
Rolling Rs is at the heart of learning Spanish and one of its most challenging trills (颜音), especially for those unaccessible to the language regularly as a young child.
This is a lesson the 21-year-old singer spent years learning in and out of school. And it’s one that has paid off for Castillo, particularly on TikTok (抖音), which has made efforts to train its Spanish creators.
The Houston native is part of a flourishing Spanish and Latinx creator community that has attracted huge followings through videos that briefly translate cultural traditions and history for a young and captive TikTok audience.
“TikTok is a window to the world, and we’ve seen people across the worldwide Latinx and Spanish connect with one another on the platform through shared stories and experiences,” Kudzi Chikumbu, TikTok’s director of creator community, told CNN over email.
TikTok videos from Spanish creators are also getting consumed more than ever.
TikTok hashtags (主题标签) #Latino, #Latina, #Familia and #Comida, among others, grew in use by more than 185% since last year’s Spanish Heritage Month, according to data shared by TikTok spokesperson Cynthia Dew. The hashtags #Latino and #Latina have more than 62 billion views combined to date, Dew added.
Millions of those views belong to Castillo, who joined TikTok roughly a year ago to share original Spanish and English songs, as well as covers.
When she started making music, Castillo thought she’d be singing in English. That changed after her family encouraged her to write records in Spanish after learning the language in high school, Castillo told CNN.
“There’s a lot of different opinions when it comes to Latinx or people like me who are learning Spanish, so I made it my job to write records that bridge the gap between Spanish speakers and those who want to learn but were never taught,” she said.
    28. What worries Castillo most in learning Spanish?
    A. She is an American Native. B. She had no access to Spanish as young.
    C. “R” is difficult to pronounce. D. She has no gift for a second language.
    29. What do the underlined words “the language” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
    A. Latin. B. Spanish. C. English. D. Rolling Rs.
    30. How do you like Castillo from her experience?
    A. Anxious and slow. B. Creative and humorous.
    C. Strong-willed and enthusiastic. D. Brave and popular.
    31. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
    A. Castillo helps non-Spanish speakers a lot. B People can understand Latinx people well.
    C. People of different languages stand apart. D. Castillo is fond of writing English records.
    D
Kwanzaa may be a festival celebrated by millions of African Americans and pan-Africans, but it has only been around for a few decades (十年). Introduced to the United States in 1966 as a ceremony to welcome the first harvest to the home, the festival, which takes place from December26 to January 1, is a celebration of life, unity, family, and culture.
Featuring feasts, music and dance, and a devotion and recommitment (再次承诺) to different principles (信条), the festival was created in the middle of the Black Freedom Movement, at a time when it was felt that cultural grounding (基础) was needed.
Dr. Maulana Karenga, professor and chairman of Black Studies at California State University in Long Beach, is responsible for bringing the festival to life. After the Watts violence in L.A., Dr. Karenga searched for ways to strengthen the African-American community. He paired the practices (惯例) with traditions of several different harvest celebrations on the African continent, and although it is celebrated around the Christmas period, it perhaps has more similarities to Thanksgiving or the Yam Festival in Ghana and Nigeria.
There are five common sets of values that are central to the week-long activities: ingathering (收获), reverence (致敬), commemoration (纪念), recommitment (再次承诺), and celebration. There are seven principles of Kwanzaa, meaning first fruits in Kiswahili, a language spoken in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. The first fruit celebrations appear in ancient and modern times in classical African civilizations.
These seven principles are known as Umoja, meaning unity, kujichagulia, self-determination, ujima, collective work, and responsibility, ujamaa, cooperative economics, nia, purpose, kuumba, creativity, and Imani, faith. There are seven candles used during the festival, and like, the Jewish Hanukkah, these candles are used to represent the principles
On December 31, participants celebrate with a plentiful meal, often featuring good meals from various African countries.
The number of Americans who celebrate Kwanzaa has changed greatly over the years, and with as many as six million getting involved in the 1980s, Kwanzaa became a mainstream (主流的) holiday. Now, however, numbers have paled (减少), but it still remains an important cultural touchstone (试金石) for many African American communities.
    32. What activity can be included during the celebration of Kwanzaa?
    A. Creating a piece of music. B. Having a plentiful meal.
    C. Giving and receiving gifts. D. Enjoying an art exhibition.
    33. How did Dr. Karenga bring Kwanzaa to life?
    A. He started the Watts violence in Los Angeles B. He created five common sets of values.
    C. He found ways to practice African traditions. D. He strengthened the unity (团结) of neighbors.
    34. What can we infer about the celebration of Kwanzaa?
    A. Kwanzaa is a festival across the world. B. Africans are considered important in the U. S.
    C. Kwanzaa is an important cultural symbol. D. Kwanzaa is less popular among young Africans.
    35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A A festival: The Culture Cross the World
    B. African Americans: An Important Part of Americans
    C. Principles: The Focus of a Festival
    D. Kwanzaa: The African Celebration of Unity and Culture

Listening to English radio programmes help me get used to how fast native speaker talk. I also repeat what I hear to help me to experience the feeling of language. Sometimes I even record my voice so I can listen to my pronunciation and compare it with the radio host! My biggest headache is why to be polite in English. It’s much easier to just say “Open the window!”, but in English that can sound really terribly. I have to think about who I’m talking to and then decided whether to say it, “Open the window, please!” or “Could you open the window, please?” or even a long one “Would you mind open the window, please?”
