I was 18 when one morning my father told me I could drive him into a village about 18 miles away, on the condition that I took the car to be repaired at a nearby garage(汽车修理厂). Having just learned to drive and hardly ever having the chance to use the car. I happily accepted. I drove Dad into the village and promised to pick him up at 4 pm, and then drove to a nearby garage. Because I had a few free hours, I decided to catch a couple of movies at a theater near the garage. When the last movie had finished, it was six o’clock. I was two hours late.
I knew Dad would be angry if he found out I’d been watching movies. I decided to tell him that the car needed some repairs and that they had taken longer than expected. I drove up to the place where we had planned to meet and saw Dad waiting patiently. I said sorry and told him that I’d come as quickly as I could, but the car had needed some important repairs.
“I’m disappointed that you feel you have to lie to me, Jason.”
“What do you mean? I’m telling the truth.”
Dad looked at me again. “When you did not show up, I called the garage. They told me that you had not yet picked up the car. So you see, I know there were no problems with the car.” I had to confess to my trip to the movie theater. Dad listened as sadness passed through him.
“I’m angry, not with you but with myself. I have failed because I have brought up a son who cannot even tell the truth to his own father. I’m going to walk home now and consider where I have gone wrong all these years.”
“But Dad, it’s 18 miles to home. It’s dark. You can’t walk home.” My words were useless. Dad began walking along the dusty roads, silently, thoughtfully and painfully. For 18 miles I drove behind him.
This was the saddest experience that I have ever had. It was also the most successful lesson I have never lied to my father after that.

What comes to your mind when you think of kung fu? Maybe the image of Shaolin monks(和尚)posing with a serious look in their eyes. But does it really present the meaning of kung fu?
Laurence J. Brahm, a documentary filmmaker from the United States, explored this question in Searching for Kung Fu. In the movie, Brahm traveled to cities in China and the US in search of the value of kung fu.
Brahm himself is a kung fu lover who has been practicing the art for more than 40 years. For him, it is more than a pastime. Ages ago, Brahm was unable to use one of his legs for two years and had to walk with a cane(拐杖). But by practicing martial arts (武术), he was able to recover step by step. Now, kung fu has become a daily activity for him and also the way he begins the day.
Still, there are other deep meanings in the practice. Nonviolence is one value, which is shown both in the name and practice of kung fu. The Chinese character Wu has two parts—ge, meaning “to fight”, and zhi, meaning “to stop”. So, the meaning of kung fu in Chinese is the art of stopping fighting, the art of nonviolence. Kung fu artists always greet people with baoquan. This lets each person know that there are no hidden weapons(武器) and shows trust.
“The traditional values of kung fu, actually, are in the minds of all Chinese people,” Brahm told Xinhua.

13.What does Brahm think of kung fu?
A.It’s just a way to kill time. B.It’s bad for the performer’s legs.
C.It’s a way to stay healthy. D.It’s the best way to greet people.
14.What does the word “nonviolence” in Paragraph 4 mean?

Then here comes the most important question: 18 Generally there are several steps along the process of making a plan. First, you have to write down your goal. It gives you the basic information of what you are going to do. Second, you can begin by picturing your goal. 19 Last, record your progress during achieving your goal.

I could remember my mom making the beans with a large cake of corn bread. It was the 37 food that we had ever had. We all would eat till we were 38 , but there were always about half of the beans left over. A few days later, my mom would take those beans out of the fridge to cook 39 .
I learned her lesson well and after I grew up, I tried not to waste food. I always planned the next 40 meals and only bought what was 41 my shopping list so that nothing went to waste. Every meal went into stomachs and then any leftovers were eaten by either 42 , my boys or my dogs. For me, 43 food into the rubbish bin was just wrong. All the work that paid into it should be honored instead of 44 wasted. I have learned something else over the past few years: When it comes to living, there are no leftovers. Each moment that you don’t live is 45 forever. Life cannot be saved. Life cannot be stored. Life has to be lived. TODAY! So, live each moment of your life to the fullest then. When a father and a son have the same name, people usually call the son “junior”. Sometimes, there will be three or more generations(代)of men with the same forename.
These last few years, it is quite popular 48 US people to name their kids after famous people. The most popular names, Daniel and Emma, both come from the names of the Harry Potter actors.
People 49 also thinking of new forenames all the time. It is also common for people to give their children names like “River”. “Apple” or “Star”.

Everyone has his or her own fears. No matter how big or small it is, learning how to overcome it is especially important. As for me, a short girl who rarely exercises, running the 800 meters has been my biggest fear for the past two years.
The PE course’s final examination requirement is to finish an 800-meter race in 3 minutes and 28 seconds. I was so scared and unconfident as my best record was 5 minutes. With the pressure, every time I started to run, my legs were heavy and sore as if they had been filled with lead. But thankfully, my PE teacher comforted me and helped me make a detailed training plan. From then on, I kept running every day whether it was sunny or rainy. Gradually I got used to it and developed it into my regular habit. My fear of running was gone.
Now, my fear of running has gone. As the old saying goes, “Where there is a will, there is a way.” What we fear is fear itself. No obstacle is impossible to break through if we put our hearts into it.
