Shashiyu was once a poor village in Hebei Province, but now it has changed into a rich and livable place.
In the 1940s, villagers in Shashiyu had little food and few clothes, but they had a strong wish for a better life.Zhang Guishun, the Party secretary of Shashiyu, encouraged his villagers to do their best to pull themselves out of poverty. “In the ancient Chinese story, Yu Gong could move mountains with his strong will and hard work, why can’t we? Nobody was born to be poor?” Hearing his words, the villagers decided to make a difference.
Led by the Communist Party of China(中国共产党), the villagers carried water and soil to their village from faraway places to improve their land. From 1966 to 1971, they reclaimed(开垦) lots of land and greatly improved their life.

In 2009, the city-level government invested over 1 million yuan ($152,723) to change the village’s exhibition hall into a museum in memory of development efforts made by earlier generations.
After 10 years, the village was called “National Forest Village”.

“Save the whales!” That’s what the picture on Jake Smith’s bedroom wall said. Jake liked having a picture that said something important: that showed he cared. He just never expected to get a chance to save a real whale, one right in his own neighbourhood.
It was a Saturday morning when the newspaper first reported the whale’ coming. A group of the animals were swimming close to the beach in Jake’s hometown. All the local people rushed out to the beach to see them. They were expecting a beautiful show, better than a movie, but nothing they’d have to do anything about.
Then one whale swam in the direction, directly towards land. It came in with the waves, and when the waves receded, its huge body on the sand. Suddenly, Jake and his family and all the others were no longer sightseers. They had to become rescuers. A few people ran towards the animal. They pushed and tried to force the whale back into the water, but it was no use.
An animal rescue service team soon arrived in a truck with heavy lifting machinery, to help move the animal. Jack and his family couldn’t do much on the beach, so they went back to their house and made sandwiches and hot tea for the rescuers. At least, Jake thought, they could help in some way.
Back at the beach, they offered the food to the rescuers and were happy to see that it was needed. It was getting dark. Some people lined up their cars along the beach and shined the headlights on the sand. The rescuers would not give up. After trying many times they were finally able to lift the whale into the water. Everyone cheered when it headed out to sea. It swam out about a mile and then disappeared for a moment under the sea. Then, in what looked like a jump of joy, it rose high above the water—a thank-you to those who had worked so hard to save his life.

Many people take running as a way to keep fit. They like to run in hot weather and enjoy the feeling of being wet through with sweat ( 汗 ) while running. Cold weather during winter months, with low temperatures and freezing cold winds, may keep many people from running in the open air.
However, a new study shows that the drop in temperature is a good reason to run. In fact, running in cold weather helps improve one’s performance. Many runners might find it easier to run in winter than in hot weather. The body needs less water on a cold day than in warm weather. In addition, lower temperatures reduce stress on the body. When you run in cold weather, your heart rate is lower.
John Brewer is a professor of applied sports science at St. Mary’s University in London. For this study, he and other researchers put a group of people into a room where summer and winter weather conditions are recreated. The test subjects were asked to run 10,000 meters under both conditions and their biological measurements were recorded and studied.
From the study, every movement runners make produces heat. The heat can be really damaging unless the body can lose it. One way in which people lose heat is by sweating. The body loses heat through sweat. The body also loses it by transporting the blood to the surface of the skin and it puts more stress on the heart, especially in hot conditions because it’s much harder to lose heat when the outside environment is warm. As the result shows, running in hot temperatures results in 6 percent higher heart rates.
When running in cold conditions, the body does not have to work hard to move blood to the skin surface. Therefore, it requires less energy. The most important thing for people who run in cold conditions is to wear the right clothing. Keep as dry as possible when exercising in low temperatures. Wear warm and light clothing to keep sweat away from your skin. So don’t let winter weather keep you indoors. Simply get ready for the low temperatures and start running.
34.Why did John Brewer make a group of people run in a room?
A.Because the weather conditions could be recreated for four seasons. B.Because the researchers could teach the people there to study science.
C.Because the professor could study science with the group of people. D.Because the test subjects’ biological measurements could be recorded.
35.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Running in cold weather doesn’t need a lot of energy. B.Running in cold weather needs heavy clothing to keep warm.
C.Running in hot weather causes hearts beat slower than in cold. D.Running in hot weather produces more heat than other movements.
36.What is the main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To study why the drop in temperature is good to run. B.To compare benefits of running in winter and summer.
C.To encourage people to keep running outdoors in winter. D.To show us how to keep healthy while running in winter.

Are you having a hard time staying focused on work? Some simple skills can make a big difference.

    1. Take care of your physical needs. The most basic one for focusing is to take good care of yourself. This means getting regular exercise. Beyond that, make sure you’re getting good nutrition which supports your brain’s work. Most of all, get plenty of sleep. When you’re tired, it’s much harder to focus on anything.

    2. Plan for your “absent-minded behaviours.”You may try to do something to reduce the stress coming from a task. These things, like mindless snacking, checking email, checking phone texts, or suddenly getting very sleepy, may also make you absent-minded. So, if you want to get focused, plan for these behaviours.
If you are likely to get sleepy, try moving to a standing desk for a while. Prepare a healthy snack to keep by your desk. If you can’t help reading email or checking your mobile phone, turn off the notices which are flashing and reminding you all the time.

    3. Plan regular breaks. One popular way is the Pomodoro Technique, which calls for 25 minutes of focused work followed by a 5-minute break, with at least a 15-minute break every two hours. Recently, a new experiment shows that it is best for you to take a 17-minute break after working for 52 minutes.
    4. Accept yourself for losing focus. It is true that you won’t always meet your own expectations of focus. Getting angry or upset about it will only make things worse. Instead, praise yourself for whatever work you manage to get done. And being happier may help you succeed.
37.According to the passage, which of the following is a good way to avoid the “absent-minded behaviour”?
    A.Having different snacks. B.Using a standing desk.
C.Getting regular exercises. D.Turning off the phone.
38.Which of the following statement is TRUE according to the Pomodoro Technique?
A.You can stay fully focused if you follow the rule of it.
B.You must take a 25-minute break after working for 60 minutes.
C.It’s unnecessary for you to take a break if you can still stay focused.
D.Take a 17-minute break after working for 52 minutes is the best choice.
39.Your friend Tina is upset for losing focus in the class this morning. After reading the passage, what will you probably say to her?
A.Doing is better than saying. B.Experience is the mother of wisdom.
C.A bad workman quarrels with his tools. D.Gold can’t be pure and man can’t be perfect.
40.What is the purpose of this passage?
A.To tell people how to stay focused.
B.To show how important staying focused is.
C.To discuss the possibility of staying focused.
D.To support a new experiment about staying focused.

    四、阅读还原5选5
“Come on! Who wants to go to take that quiz? All of us are cutting(逃)Math. We’re going to take a walk and get lunch instead. Let’s go!” says the coolest kid in your class. At this moment, do you know what is the right thing to do and choose to go to Math class to take the quiz? Or do you give in and go with them?
People who are at your age, like your classmates, are called peers. When they try to influence how you act, to get you to do something, it’s called peer pressure. 41 .
42 Maybe another student in your science class taught you an easy way to remember the names of different planets, or you got others excited about your new favorite book; and now everyone’s reading it. 43 For example, a few kids in school might try to get you to cut class with them; a friend of yours try to make you talk something bad about another friend with him or her together.
It is difficult to be the only one who says “no” to peer pressure, but you can do it. 44
This can help you know the right thing to do. You’ve probably had a parent or teacher advising you to “choose your friends wisely.” 45 If you choose friends who don’t cut class, smoke, or lie to their parents, then you probably won’t do these things either.
If you continue to face peer pressure and you’re finding it difficult to deal with, talk to someone you trust. They can help you feel much better and prepare you for the next time you face peer pressure.
A.Peers can have a positive influence on each other.
B.It’s something that everyone has to deal with—even adults.
C.Peer pressure is a big reason why they say this.
D.But sometimes peers influence each other in negative(消极的)ways.
E.Pay attention to your own feelings and thoughts about what is right and wrong.

    Dear everybody,
As is known to all, the environment around us is getting worse and worse. Now pollution is everywhere. The river has become dirty, the sky has turned gray and some areas do not have clean drinking water. Many people have bad habits, such as throwing rubbish everywhere, wasting water and drinking food.
So it’s time to protect the environment. First, we should take green actions. For example, we should go to school by bike or by bus instead of by car. Second, we also need to save resource. Third, we had better plant more trees.
I think the activity is meaningful. Environmental protection is closely related to our daily life. So it is everyone’s responsibility to protect our environment.
