(2022·福州高中毕业班质检)Tracy Garrett was the Mr FixIt of a village where I lived for two years.I heard about mysterious doings of his late wife,Minnie. There were stories of someone who had got into trouble a proper amount of money would cure, and each ended on the same strange note: “ Minnie is in hock again.”
I tried to talk with the locals to solve the mystery. But at a newcomer's spying curiosity, the villagers always avoided the issue. It left me completely in the dark.
Soon I began having troubles of my own.My daughter had an expensive operation, but the money I had counted on didn't come in.
One day Garrett came to fix my sink, which never worked properly.Working silently for a while,he looked at me and said,“Understand you've been having a little trouble.”I was feeling bitter, but still talked it out.“Then it's time you met Minnie,”he said decisively.
I felt a bit scared and was prepared for anything, but all that happened was that he took out a tiredlooking $1,000 banknote.Roughly printed on it was: MINNIE.
“All you do is take Minnie to the bank and put her up for a loan for any amount up to $1,000.You pay the bank their regular rate of interest, and then Minnie comes back to me,” he continued.“ Minnie loved this village, and she wanted to keep on helping people after she was gone.”
I began to understand why the town folk had been so secretive. They didn't know whether I could be trusted with a secret so precious.
Though I moved away later,I would like to believe Minnie is still in circulation(流通).Minnie strikes me as the kind of woman who goes on for ever.

[2022·石家庄高中毕业班质检(一)试题]Chinese cultural relic authorities on Thursday revealed some new discoveries from the puzzling Sanxingdui Ruins in Sichuan Province, including a gold mask,a huge bronze mask, bronze statues and ivory carvings.
A complete gold mask 37.2 centimetres wide,16.5 centimetres high and about 100 grams in weight was unearthed from No.3 Pit.The golden mask shares a similar size and the same facial features as one of the bronze heads unearthed before.“This golden mask might be a part of the face of the bronze head,” Ran Honglin head of the Sanxingdui Institute of Archaeology(考古学),told the GlobalTimes.Meanwhile,a large bronze mask,135 centimetres wide and 74 centimetres high, was dug up from the same pit, which is relatively well preserved and it is the largest bronze mask ever discovered at the site.
Among the newly unearthed bronze statues from No.4 Pit,one standing figure is being jokingly called the ancient“ancestor”of the popular Japanese superhero“Ultraman”due to the pointed crown(王冠)on its head and his eyes that stick out.Another bronze statue has a special hairstyle that reminded people of the crownshaped hat worn by Zhuge Liang,a Chinese statesman living during the Three Kingdoms period. And still another bronze statue has a unique pose. The figure is kneeling down with his head turned to the right and his hands are on the front left side of his body, but most interestingly, the figure is standing on the balls of both feet with his heels high in the air.The shapes and decorations of these bronze statues make them unique as valuable resources for the research of the ancient Kingdom of Shu,some 3,000 years ago.
Currently, the third and fourth pits have produced 729 and 1,073 relics, including three relics made from unknown materials.Meanwhile,200 ivory relics have been discovered in the eighth pit.

Coral reefs are a necessary part of sea life and support it by providing shelter and habitat to various organisms. They also supply and recycle nutrients as well as enable a fish population to boom, along with other species, for a healthy and diverse ecosystem.
However, the rise in average water temperature due to climate change has resulted in more frequent and extended “coral bleaching(珊瑚白化)”events that damage their health, causing fish and other sea species to abandon them.
In order to repair this delicate ecosystem, scientists from the UK and Australia conducted a study that involved using speakers underwater near damaged coral reefs to make them sound healthy and attract fish, potentially starting the natural recovery process of coral reefs and their dependent life forms.
The location of this experiment was the Great Barrier Reef in the Coral Sea,found alongside the east coast of Queensland,Australia, which is famous for having the largest coral reef system in the world that's 2,300 kilometres long and covers an area of nearly 344,400 square kilometres.By using loudspeakers to reproduce such sounds, areas of dead coral reefs were found to attract twice as many fish, compared to places where no sounds were played. These returning fish could help in the recovery of this ecosystem by giving those areas of coral a chance of new life.
“Fish are important for coral reefs to function as healthy ecosystems.Increasing fish populations in this way could help to start the natural recovery process, reducing the damage we're seeing on many coral reefs around the world.Of course, attracting fish to a dead coral reef won't bring it back to life automatically, but the recovery process relies on fish that clean the coral reef to make space for coral to regrow,”said Mark Meekan.
