Richard Rodriguez from the United States is a great roller coaster follower. Recently he broke his 15th world record after he spent 104 days riding one of the world’s largest roller coasters.
“It got more difficult to ride and ride because of the muscle tiredness.” Rodriguez, a teacher at the University of Chicago, said as he stepped down from the ride in a German park. He spent 10 hours a day on the roller coaster.
Rodriguez tried to keep himself busy during the rides on the big roller coaster in a southwestern town in Germany. “I read the newspapers ... I have a walkman, I have my cell phone, so I try to talk to people and message people during the day,” he said.
Although the 42-year-old man said he felt sick on the first few days, he said he soon got over the problem.
“My face hurts sharply and I have a little backache, but I am good.”
The “Expedition GeForce” is one of the world’s biggest roller coasters. It measures 62 metres at its highest point.
On his 95th day on the coaster, after travelling over 25,000 kilometres, Rodriguez had a toothache and was treated by a local dentist. He went on after that and succeeded in breaking the record.

After years of heated debate, gray wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park. Fourteen wolves were caught in Canada and transported to the park. By last year, the Yellowstone wolf population had grown to more than 170 wolves.
Gray wolves once were seen here and there in the Yellowstone area and much of the continental United States, but they were gradually displaced by human development. By the 1920s, wolves had practically disappeared from the Yellowstone area. They went farther north into the deep forests of Canada, where there were fewer humans around.
The disappearance of the wolves had many unexpected results. Deer and elk populations—major food sources for the wolf—grew rapidly. These animals ate large amounts of vegetation(植被), which reduced plant diversity(多样性) in the park. In the absence of wolves, coyote populations also grew quickly. The coyotes killed a large percentage of the park’s red foxes, and completely drove away the park’s beavers.
As early as 1966, biologists asked the government to consider reintroducing wolves to Yellowstone Park. They hoped that wolves would be able to control the elk and coyote problems. Many farmers were against the plan because they feared that wolves would kill their farm animals or pets.
The government spent nearly 30 years coming up with a plan to reintroduce the wolves. The US Fish and Wildlife Service carefully tracks and manages the wolf packs in Yellowstone. Today, the debate continues over how well the gray wolf is fitting in at Yellowstone. Elk, deer, and coyote populations are down, while beavers and red foxes have made a comeback. The Yellowstone wolf project has been a valuable experiment to help biologists decide whether to reintroduce wolves to other parts of the country as well.
28. What is the text mainly about?
A. Wildlife research in the United States.
B. Plant diversity in the Yellowstone area.
C. The fight between farmers and gray wolves.
D. The reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone Park.

In recent years, stressed-out people living in cities have been seeking protection in green spaces for the proven positive impacts on physical and mental health, but the benefits of “blue spaces” —not only the sea and coastline, but also rivers, lakes, canals, waterfalls, even fountains—are less well advertised, yet the science has been consistent for at least a decade:living by water is good for the body and mind.
“Many of the processes are exactly the same as with green spaces—with some added benefits,” says Dr Mathew White, a senior lecturer at the University of Exeter.
White says there are three established pathways by which the presence of water is positively related to health and happiness. First, there are the beneficial environmental factors, such as less polluted air and more sunlight. Second, people who live by water tend to be more physically active. Third—and this is where blue spaces seem to have an advantage over other natural environments—water has a psychological recovery effect. “When you are sailing, surfing or swimming,” says White, “you’re really in step with natural forces there.”
Catherine Kelly is a wellness practitioner who teaches classes in “mindfulness by the sea”. She says the sea has a quality that can make people thoughtful.
“To go to the sea means letting go,” says Kelly. “It could be lying on a beach or somebody handing you a cocktail. For somebody else, it could be a wild, empty coast. But there is this really human sense of:‘Oh, look, there’s the sea’—and the shoulders drop.”
32. Why are blue spaces less popular than green spaces?
A. Green spaces are good to people’s health.
B. Little research has been done on blue spaces.
C. Green spaces have more benefits than blue spaces.
D. The benefits of green spaces are better advertised.
解析:推理判断题。根据第一段中的“but the benefits of ... are less well advertised”可知,与绿色空间的益处相比,蓝色空间的益处较少被宣传。故选D项。
答案:D
33. Where are blue spaces superior to other natural environments according to Dr Mathew White?
A. Where there’s water, there’s fresh air.
B. People living near water are healthier.
C. Water can help people restore mental health.
D. The sea can make people lost in deep thought.
解析:细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Third—and this is where blue spaces seem to have an advantage over other natural environments—water has a psychological recovery effect.”可知,蓝色空间(水)相比其他自然环境的一个优势是蓝色空间(水)有助于心理恢复。故选C项。
答案:C
34. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. The sea will bring you loneliness.
B. The sea will hurt your shoulders.
C. The sea will put you at ease.
D. The sea will make you feel down.
解析:细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“To go to the sea means letting go”, “lying on a beach or somebody handing you a cocktail”及最后一句可知,去海边能让人放松,人们可以尽情享受在海边的休闲时光。故选C项。
答案:C
35. What does the author mainly want to tell us in the text?
A. People in cities prefer green spaces.
B. Blue spaces help both physically and mentally.
C. Green spaces have been out of date.
D. Ways to keep us healthy.

Desiree, a 4-year-old girl, was sobbing quietly over a photo of her father, Ken, who had died nine months earlier. She was hugging the photo with her fingers running around his face. “Daddy,” she said softly, “why won’t you come back?”
Instead of gradually adjusting to her father’s death, Desiree refused to accept it. “Daddy will be home soon,” she’d tell her mother. “He’s at work.” When she played with her toy telephone, she pretended she was chatting with her father. “I miss you, Daddy,” she’d say. “When will you come back?” Desiree’s situation made her mother worried.
Days later, it was Ken’s birthday. “How will I send him a card?” Desiree asked her mother. “How about if we tie a letter to a balloon,” her mother said, “and send it up to the sky?” Desiree’s eyes immediately lit up.
Her mother took her to a store and Desiree picked out a balloon with Happy Birthday above a drawing of The Little Mermaid(美人鱼). Desiree and her father had often watched it. The child’s eyes shone as they were on the way to Ken’s grave. Then Desiree read a letter to her dad. “Happy birthday, Daddy. I love you and miss you,” she said quickly. “I hope you will get this and can write to me on my birthday in January.”
Her mother wrote the message and their address on a small piece of paper, which was then wrapped in plastic and tied to the end of the string on the balloon. Finally, Desiree released the balloon. For almost an hour, they watched the shining spot of silver grow smaller and smaller till it disappeared. “Now dad’s going to write back to me,” Desiree declared confidently.
Every day since they’d released the balloon, Desiree had asked her mother, “Do you think daddy has received my balloon yet?” Several weeks passed, and she stopped asking.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
(2)请按如下格式作答。

Paragraph 1:
One day, 3,000 miles away, Wade was on a duck hunt when suddenly something in the bush caught his eye. Curiously, he approached to find a balloon, with a piece of paper at the end of the string, wrapped in plastic. Taking it home, Wade read the touching lines to his wife Donna. She was deeply moved. With tears in her eyes, Donna decided to help Desiree. The couple went to buy a birthday card and a book The Little Mermaid, and then she began to write a letter to Desiree.
Paragraph 2:
Desiree’s fifth birthday came and later in the afternoon, a package arrived. Looking at the unfamiliar return address, Desiree’s mother was confused. Suddenly an idea struck her: the balloon! She opened the parcel and found a card with “For My Dear Daughter”. Her heart raced. She rushed to Desiree’s room and showed her the letter. “It’s from daddy!” Desiree jumped with joy, asking her mother to read it for her. “Happy birthday, my little girl,” her mother began. Tears began to run down Desiree’s cheeks.
