一、Lead-in 1.Greeting: How do you understand this unit’s title “Working the Land”
Who is the man in the photo? What crop is he holding in his hands? What do you know about him? Background information : Yuan Longping is father of hybrid rice, who received the great honor for his great contributions to hybrid rice research and the work he did to improve rice production in developing countries. He is called a pioneer for all people. 二. Reading （一）.Fast reading: Read the text. Match the main idea with each paragraph.

（三）、Read for details: 1. Why does Yuan Longping consider himself a farmer? Because he continually works the land in his research. 2. Why did Yuan Longping decide to study agriculture? He was concerned that farmers had poor harvests and sometimes even had a shortage of food to eat. 3. What is main advantage of hybrid crops? One characteristic of hybrids is that they usually attain a higher yield than conventional crops. 4. How has Yuan’s work helped China and other countries? Yuan’s innovation has helped feed not just China, but many other countries that depend on rice as well, such as India and Vietnam. 5. What is Yuan’s latest vision?
