American mathematician Dennis Sullivan has been awarded the 2022 Abel Prize, one of the most distinguished awards in math, for his contributions to the fields of topology and dynamical systems. Sullivan has been recognized for his groundbreaking contributions to topology in its broadest sense, and particularly its algebraic (代数的), geometric and dynamical aspects.
Topology is the study of properties of objects and spaces that do not change when they are deformed (变形). The field is sometimes called “rubber-sheet geometry”, because objects can be stretched into different shapes like rubber but cannot be broken. For instance, a square can be deformed into a circle without breaking, but a doughnut shape cannot.
Sullivan, born in Port Huron, Michigan, in 1941, began studying topology as a graduate student at Princeton University in the early 1960s. His 1966 doctoral thesis, called “Triangulating Homotopy Equivalences,” helped revolutionize the study of manifolds, spaces that look flat when viewed from any point on their surface but have a more complicated overall structure.
Subsequently Sullivan taught at several other universities. During this time, he gradually changed how mathematicians perceived algebraic and geometric topology, introducing new ideas and building a new vocabulary. In 1970, he wrote a set of unpublished notes widely circulated and considered hugely influential.
By the late 1970s, Sullivan began investigating problems in dynamical systems, which is the study of a point moving through a geometrical space and a fundamental part of chaos theory. His work united dynamical systems and algebraic topology in ways that had never been done. In 1985, Sullivan proved a 60-year-old assumption that points moving in complex dynamical systems eventually return to their starting point rather than wandering about endlessly.
“Dennis P. Sullivan has repeatedly changed the landscape of topology by introducing new concepts”, said Hans Munthe-Kaas, chair of the Abel Committee. “I’m not sure Sullivan sees the boundaries between different areas of mathematics the same as other people see it.”
8.What is the purpose of the second paragraph?
    A.To clarify a concept. B.To present a fact.
C.To explain a phenomenon. D.To make an assumption.
9.Which of the following best describes Sullivian?
A.Promising and sincere. B.Committed and pioneering.
C.Generous and intelligent D.Ambitious and considerate.
10.Which statement corresponds with Sullivian’s new theory?
A.Spaces have a more complicated overall structure.
B.A doughnut can be deformed into a circle without breaking.
C.Dynamic systems and algebraic topology can’t be integrated.
D.Points moving in certain systems eventually return to their starting point.
11.What can we infer from Hans Munthe-Kaas’ remarks in the last paragraph?
A.Sullivian doesn’t normally agree with others.
B.Different areas of mathematics have no boundaries.
C.Sullivian may have his own way of viewing different areas of maths.
D.Hans Munthe-Kaas has prejudice against Sullivian in the areas of mathematics.

Is constant information-seeking on social media helpful during an emergency? One study conducted in March 2020 involving more than 6,000 people found that the more time participants spent consuming negative news in a day, the unhappier they felt. These findings are striking but leave a few key questions unanswered.
Does this doomscrolling or doomsurfing make people unhappy, or are unhappy people just more likely to doomscroll? And what would occur if we were “kindness scrolling”? To find out, researchers conducted a study where they showed hundreds of people real-world content on social media for 2 to 4minutes. The social media featured either general news about crises, or news about kindness during crises. Findings were that those shown general crisis-related news experienced lower moods than those shown nothing at all. Meanwhile, people shown crisis news stories involving acts of kindness neither experienced the same decline in mood nor gained the boost in mood they’d predicted. These findings suggest that spending as little as 2 to 4 minutes consuming negative news about crisis can have a harmful impact on our mood. Although researchers didn’t see an improvement in mood among participants shown positive news stories involving acts of kindness, this may be because the stories were still related to crises.
So what can we do to make our time on social media more pleasurable? Can we delete our social media accounts altogether? But how realistic is it to distance ourselves from platforms that connect nearly half of the world’s population?
Given that avoidance might not be practical, seek out content that makes you happy to balance out your newsflashes. This may be images of cute pets, beautiful landscapes or delicious food videos. Sharing good things in your life can improve your mood, and your positive mood can spread to others.
12.How does the author perceive the first study?
    A.Unreliable. B.Imperfect. C.Doubtful. D.Misty.
13.What does the underlined word “doomscrolling” mean in the second paragraph?
    A.Truth-seeking. B.Attention-claiming.
    C.Negative-news-reading. D.Information-evaluating.
14.What does the study described in the second paragraph indicate?
A.Positive news stories help improve one’s mood.
B.Negative news consuming does harm to one’s mood.
C.Crisis-related acts of kindness can change one’s mood.
D.The longer one reads negative news, the less content one will be.
15.What does the author suggest social-media users do?
A.Share images or videos. B.Keep off platforms.
C.View pleasurable newsflashes. D.Log out social media accounts.

I was drawing crazy and I drew my first picture at the age of two.
When I was four, my life as I know it now began. I was struck by a disease called Selective Mutism. This is a rare childhood disorder in which children stop speaking in certain social situations. I spoke normally to my parents, my brother and certain other people, but was silent at school and in social situations. I went days, weeks, months without a sound at school. At best, I might quietly whisper to a friend.
Normally, children with Selective Mutism will not speak in the presence of others; even to a person they normally talk to. There is a lot of whispering in ears, so that others don’t hear. We have normal or above average IQs and usually no speech pathology (病理). The most key factor in this disorder is, we cannot speak. We do not do this purposely or willfully, it feels impossible to speak. As you can imagine, many children are blamed, punished and psychologically harmed, especially at school. The disorder is believed to be anxiety related and treatment is difficult, but not impossible.
My parents searched for a cure. At the moment, we did not even have a name for what I had. I suffered silently through school until I was ten when one in a long string of psychologists had an idea. Having discussed his plan with my parents beforehand, one day in my therapy (治疗) session I was asked by the psychologist what I wanted more than anything in the world. He explained that I was going to be given an opportunity to work for what I wanted. I couldn’t believe my good luck, but I could not answer. I just stood there struggling to gesture what I wanted. Finally, I was permitted to whisper in my mother’s ear. “Drawing,” was all I could say.
    注意: 1. 续写词数应为150 左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
My parents without delay offered me a set of drawing tools.

结合语境可知,“leaving only the Chinese characters  ___2___  part of its new branding strategy”表达“只留下汉字作为其新品牌战略的一部分”含义,因此,这里应是介词“as(作为)”。“leave sth. as…” 故填as。
故填an。
“significant”,形容词,意为“显著的,重要的”,其副词形式为“significantly(有重大意义地;显著地;明显地)”。故填significantly。
故填its。
分析可知,“___9 ____ over half of the oh-oh group believe”为主语从句,从句中动词“believe”缺少宾语,结合语境宾语应是指物,用连接代词what引导从句。故填what。
分析可知,“With the quality of products of local brands ___10___ (arise)”为with复合结构,所填非谓语动词“arise”与名词“the quality of products of local brands”之间为主动关系,用现在分词形式作宾补。故填arising。
    46.My Housework Week
The “housework week” activity held last week was a great opportunity for me. I engaged actively in helping my parents with housework.
Besides sweeping the floor, cleaning windows and watering flowers, what I felt most proud of was that I learned to make an authentic dish-braised eggplant. It was really hard, but under my mom’s guidance, I eventually got the hang of it. Nothing is more exciting than being able to cook delicious meals.
Doing housework helps me become more independent and responsible. Now it is my routine to do housework. (95 words)
    举行,举办:hold→take place
    机会:opportunity→chance
    最后:eventually→finally
    因……而自豪:be proud of→take pride in

    47. My parents without delay offered me a set of drawing tools. Whenever I had free time, I would sit hours drawing with these tools. What I enjoyed drawing most were birds. While I was drawing flying birds, dancing birds and singing birds, I felt like a free bird. My drawings appealed to many of my classmates. They enjoyed my pictures and we became good friends. Having learned all about this, my teacher came up with a good idea. He helped set up a drawing club in our school, where drawing lovers often gather to share our experience in drawing. I no longer feel lonely.
Lam a fully participating member of society these days. Though I can’t speak well, I have no problem expressing myself. In the club, I share my stories in broken language with the club members. They are deeply moved and encouraged to overcome difficulties. Last week, with my teachers’ support, I held a personal art exhibition at school, which turned out to be very successful. A great many teachers and students came to visit and I have made more friends. Thanks to my parents, teachers and classmates, I feel I am a fully social member now.
