The summer before my junior year in high school, my family and I took a trip to a completely new world. Being from a small town, I had never really been to a large city such as New York City.
As we stood waiting for a taxi outside of the airport, it was clear to me that New York City was not the same as New Caney, Texas. It seemed that everyone there was in a hurry to get to another place. The loud sound of cars was heard throughout the whole trip. When we found our hotel in Times Square, I noticed that it wasn’t just the cars that were in a hurry. Everyone in the streets was walking quickly to be somewhere. Just standing and watching so many people rushing their own ways was an interesting thing.
In addition to the people and transportation, the buildings were also a wonderful sight. Each street was full of buildings that were built side by side with no room in between, and a number of skyscrapers (摩天大楼) were presented throughout the city as well. The stores were also large compared to the ones of my little town. A small shop in New Caney would be a huge store that took up a whole building in New York.
For the first time in my life, I was in what the real world is like. The transportation, the huge skyscrapers, and all of the thousands of people made me anxious (渴望) to grow up and perhaps move to a city such as this one. Either way, my first trip to New York was one of the most unusual experiences of my life, one I will always value.
54.According to the author, New Caney is ________.
A.a very large city B.a rather small town C.a busy and noisy place D.an undeveloped village
55.The author was interested by all of the following EXCEPT ________.
A.the people B.the transportation C.the buildings D.the food
56.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Big cities can provide young people with more chances. B.A trip to New York City made my love of my hometown less.
C.My visit to New York City was a life changing experience. D.People from small towns are not confident.
As more and more people are using the Internet both in their lives and in their work, it is best for us lo know how to search for information online in a safe and smart way. Here are some tips to help you.
Several keywords will help to find better results.
Use more than one keyword when you are searching. If you want to find out about seagulls (海鸥), for example, search for “bird seagull” and not just “seagull”—because “seagull” might also be the name of just about anything else, from a hotel to a documentary film.
Remove unwanted results.
You can do this by adding a minus symbol (-). For example, if you type in “seagull-hotel-film”, you won’t see things about hotels and films.
Check your spelling.
Make sure that you spell every word in the search box correctly. The smallest typing mistakes can bring unwanted results, especially when the mistyped word exists (存在).
Have a filter (筛选程序).
It’s a good idea to filter your online searches because something online is not good for teenagers, especially when you are searching for pictures. Ask an adult to help you add a filtering system. There are lots of filtering software choices available.
Try different search engines (搜索引擎).
Keep trying until you find the one that’s best for you. Some search engines personalize the results, so check out the choice of using a search engine that doesn’t do this and you will get different results.
Reliability (可信度) is very important.
Always ask yourself, “Is this reliable?” Don’t make the mistake of believing everything you see. Some websites are unreliable and some information is false. Check your information on other websites before accepting it.
57.Why is it better to use more than one keyword when we are searching online?
A.Because we can get better results in this way. B.Because we can get more meanings of the word.
C.Because the Internet requires more than one word. D.Because the Internet can’t help us with only one word.
58.According to the article, the minus symbol ________.
A.is considered unnecessary B.will cause a mistake for us C.can cut out what you don’t want D.is likely to give you a long list of results
59.According to the article, a filtering system________.
A.can help you check your spelling B.can help you find the best search engine
C.can help you get all the true and fun information D.can help you get good and useful information online
60.Which question could best help us find out the writer’s purpose?
A.Did the writer try to teach us skills? B.Did the writer help us understand ideas?
C.Did the writer invite us to attend a course? D.Did the writer ask us to be polite online?
When you’re having a hard time with something, it’s natural to turn to others for help. Getting help sounds simple, but it’s not always easy to do so. Sometimes certain beliefs or ways of thinking can make it hard to ask for help. Here are some kinds of attitudes that can stand in the way and ideas on how to get past them.
Some people believe that needing help is a sign of weakness. Actually, it’s a sign of strength, not weakness. You know what you need and you shouldn’t be afraid to reach out for it. Once a boy told me he wanted to ask his coach how to improve his basketball skills, but he was afraid that his coach might think he shouldn’t be on the team. In fact, when he asked his coach for help, his coach thought he practiced hard.
Some other people think they don’t deserve (应该得到) help or support. Everyone needs help now and then. Accepting help can strengthen friendships and relationships. Everyone feels good when they can support a friend. For example, if you want to find out how Katy solves problems with her parents, you should ask Katy if she has time to talk and tell her how important her view-point is, instead of worrying that Katy is too busy to help you. When you ask for help, choose someone who listens and cares, not someone who judges or criticizes you. If you get refused, it’s not because of you, but the other person. So tell yourself: If Katy says no, she might not be ready to talk about her own experiences.
Another wrong attitude is waiting for someone else to make the first move. It’s not always easy for other people to detect when you need help. Maybe you’re putting on a cheerful face to hide the problem. Don’t wait for someone to read your mind. You have to ask.
Because it can be hard to reach out for help, don’t hesitate (犹豫) to offer support to another person if you think he or she needs it. Giving and receiving help are great life skills to learn. They help us improve our abilities to understand other people.
61.Why was the boy afraid to ask his coach for help in Paragraph 2?
A.Because his coach criticized him before. B.Because his coach was too busy to help him.
C.Because he didn’t practice as hard a other players. D.Because he thought it would show he was a weak player.
62.Why does the writer give the example of Katy?
A.To support his idea. B.To ask readers to explain it. C.To compare Katy with her friends. D.To show what Katy should do.
63.What should you do if you need help?
A.Be supportive to other people first. B.Be active to find a caring person to talk to.
C.Try to make your friends notice what you need. D.Put on a happy face to avoid worrying other people.
64.What does the underlined word “detect” mean?
A.Find. B.Think. C.Control. D.Imagine.
65.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.Asking for Help: Everyone’s Natural Ability B.Asking for Help: Getting Past Improper Attitudes
C.Giving and Receiving Help: Great Skills to Learn D.Giving and Receiving Help: Strengthening Relationships

How can you communicate with your doctors before the introduction of the Internet of Things (IoT) in the healthcare industry? You could just visit, call or send text messages to them. It was a difficult task for doctors to regularly follow a patient’s health and offer their suggestions. Now, healthcare is growing rapidly with the use of IoT. Here are a few of the influences of IoT on healthcare that we could end up seeing in the years.
On Patients
Patients can be given quick care and regular health checks with the help of smart devices (设备) like fitness bands (健身带). They can check your heart rate, blood pressure, blood sugar level and so on. Such devices can also remind you about the medicine you need to lake, or when you should exercise, when you should see a doctor and so on.
On Doctors
With the use of IoT-driven devices, doctors can keep an eye on their patients’ health better. They can follow the present treatment plans of their patients, medicines they are taking, their heart rate, and any need they may have for immediate help. This keeps the healthcare providers pretty watchful with their patients’ health.
On Hospitals
IoT can be used to monitor (监测) health checks. Besides, there are many areas where the technology will be helpful to hospitals. These IoT devices can be used to monitor the real-time location of medical equipment and devices like wheelchairs and hospital beds.
