How would you feel if your textbooks turned into comic books? This is what comic (喜剧的) artist “Brother Hunzi (混子哥)”, or Chen Lei, has been working on. He wants to help spread knowledge through comic books. The 37-year-old thinks that information could be more interesting through the exaggerated (夸张的) facial expressions and funny dialogue of comic characters.
Chen published his first comic book about Chinese history in 2017. Now, Chen’s brand “ErHunzhi” has millions of followers on social media platforms. “When I was in middle school, I had no interest in history, ” Chen said, “I couldn’t remember historical facts even though I studied hard.” However, in college, Chen played a computer game about World War II, which sparked his interest in history. The experience made him question why he loved studying but still couldn’t get good results in exams. “I didn’t master effective learning methods,” Chen said, “or my interest hadn’t been aroused.”
In 2015, Chen decided to start his own educational comic book business. Working with others, he’s made comic books on topics including how contagious (传染的) diseases have affected people and about the history of the Communist Party of China. In making comics, Chen says it’s important to be creative. “You must have your unique understanding and presentation to attract readers,” he said. For example, he compared the Eastern Zhou Dynasty as a class, and the State of Qi as the class monitor, with other States being the rest of the students. They always argued with each other. By helping people to learn more easily, Chen sees himself as a a “porter (搬运工)” of knowledge.

Here is how to make a model submarine (潜水艇) that dives like a real one.
You’ll need:
• Plastic bottle
•Tape
• Four coins
• Small scissors
• Bathtub
• Thin rubber (橡胶的) or plastic tube (管子)
• Waterproof (防水的) modeling clay (黏土) — not real clay, which dissolves (溶解) in water
Ways of making:
1. Cut two small holes on one side of the bottle. Tape (潜水) and comes up from underwater coins to that side of the bottle. Remove cap; seal the tube to the bottle with clay.
2. Fill bathtub with water; put bottle in and let it fill with water.
3. Gently blow into the tube and observe what happens. Stop blowing and close the tube with your thumb. Lift your thumb and watch what happens.
What happened?
When you blow, air pushes out water; the bottle becomes lighter and rises. Bottle sinks (下沉) when it fills with water and coins weight it down. Coins keep holes pointing downward, so air does not escape.
When you stop blowing and seal (密封) the tube with your thumb, the bottle floats. Lift your thumb, air escapes through the tube and the bottle sinks. A real submarine works this way, by filling tanks with air or water.

There is a famous English saying “You are what you eat”. It means that what you put in your mouth will become part of you. Many experts use it to tell people it’s important to have a good eating habit. For example, too much sweet (甜的) food makes a person overweight. To avoid (避免) being fat, kids are told to keep away from sweet food. However, a team of American scientists have found something new about eating sweet food. “When we say someone is ‘sweet’, we mean they are kind and friendly. Maybe this can help us learn more about a person’s character (性格), ” said Brian Meier, a scientist from the study team. “Taste is something we experience every day. What we’ve done is to find out if someone’s character has to do with their taste.”
In the first experiment, students were asked questions about their character — if, for example, they were warm-hearted or not. Then they were asked to make a list of their favorite food. According to their answers, the scientists found that the students who liked sweet food were nicer.
In another experiment, the scientists found that people who liked sweet food such as candies and chocolate were more ready to help other people in need, and those who loved non-sweet food such as eggs and chips weren’t. For example, people with a sweet tooth were more prepared to volunteer to clean up their city, visit sick children in the hospital and so on.
The result of the experiments is that people’s helpfulness or being nice has something to do with their taste for sweet food. So eating sweet food is a useful way to make people nice and helpful. Next time, try some ice-cream.

Dear Jenny,
I’m glad to know you’re interested in tea. We had an activity about tea culture on April 10th. The event was held at Ecological Farm, which was a beautiful place. We helped the farmers there to do many things, such as picking tea-leaves, helping to carry tea, enjoying nice tea and so on. This activity made me know about the history and culture of tea. I realized that even though many people know about tea culture, the Chinese are without doubt the ones who best understand the nature of tea.
I hope you can come to China to enjoy it personally.
Yours,
Li Hua
