We use the Internet a lot every day. We learn English through online lessons. We watch online videos. We talk to friends through WeChat. But that is not all.
In the future, we are going to connect everything around us to the Internet, not only computers and smartphones. We might connect the refrigerator, the car, the house and even whole cities to the Internet. It is a big idea called the "Internet of Things"(IoT) or the "Internet of Everything".
How do we connect things to the Internet? We do it by putting built-in sensors (内置传感器), chips and software(软件) into them.
In the world of IoT, we can "talk" to our car and house through the Internet. The car and house can also ''talk" to each other. It makes our life easier and helps us save money, time and energy.
IoT was a hot topic at the Second World Internet Conference. It took place in Wuzhen, Zhejiang, earlier last month. Experts said that in recent years, 30 to 50 billion things would connect to IoT.
Your house knows when you are at home and when you are not. So in the summer, it makes rooms cooler when you are home. And after you leave, it stops cooling down the rooms.
Water and gas pipes (天然气管道) can tell your town when there is a leak.
Your refrigerator can "remember" things, such as what you put in and pull out of it. So it can send you e-mails with dinner ideas. Or it will shop online for you when things run out.
You drive your car home. The car tells your house that you live five kilometers away. So the house turns on the lights and warms up.
You may fall asleep on the sofa while watching TV. Don't worry, your smartwatch can feel this. It will turn off your TV and lights for you.

A new report shows what life might be like in 100 years now. It describes skyscrapers that are much taller than today's buildings, underwater "bubble" cities and holidays in space. The report is from a company. It asked experts(专家) on space and architecture as well as city planners to give their ideas on the life in 2116. They said the way we live and work and play will be totally different to how we do these things. The experts used the Internet as an example. They said that 25 years ago people could not imagine how the Internet and smart phones would change our lives. The Internet has completely changed the way we communicate and do daily things. The experts said the changes in the next century would be even more unbelievable.
Researchers questioned 3000 adults about the prediction (预言) they thought were most likely(很可能的) to happen in the future. They predicted that in the future few people will go to an office but will work from home and have work meetings online. People will have highly developed 3-D printers that will let you download (下载) a design for furniture or a food recipe and then "print" the sofa, table or pizza at home. Artificial intelligence (AI) (人工智能) is growing rapidly. We are living in a world that depends more and more on AI. AI is a group of technologies that help machines get, understand and use information to do tasks.
AI’s recent developments have got a lot of social attention. Some people have welcomed AI because it makes things possible. For example, AI will have a big influence on areas like medicine and engineering. But this attention has also produced a lot of fear. Especially, many workers are worrying that AI could make them lose their jobs.
According to a recent study, nearly five percent of jobs will disappear because of AI. In some industries, AI is already doing the work that people used to do, such as assembling (装配) cars, digging the coal and lifting goods. Self-driving cars and trucks controlled by AI will also take away the driver’s jobs in the future.
On the other hand, AI will also create many new jobs for people. More people will be needed to write programmers for AI systems (系统) and they will set up and work on them, too. Meanwhile, jobs that require feelings, excellent communication skills with people will not be replaced (取代) by AI. These includes jobs in fields like teaching, nursing and personal training.
AI is here. It is changing how people live and work in many ways. That makes AI important to watch, not to fear.
