In the state of Qin, there was a man called Shang Yang. He was a statesman(政治家) and worked out many reforms for the state, like paying more attention to farming and giving rewards to soldiers who were successful when at war.
But these reforms were not easily carried out at first. Most people didn’t trust Shang Yang. In order to solve this problem, Shang Yang came up with an idea. He put a thin wooden pole at the south gate of the Qin capital. Many people came to see him and the pole.
Then, in front of the crowd, Shang Yang said loudly, “The man who takes this pole to the north gate will get 10 gold pieces.”
It was a simple job and the reward was so large. However, some time passed and no one stepped forward. They all thought Shang Yang was making a joke.
Hearing no answer, Shang Yang stepped forward and said, “The reward now goes to 50 gold pieces.”
This reward was unbelievably large. Finally, a man from the crowd came forward. He put the pole on his shoulder and walked to the north gate. True to his word, Shang Yang gave the man 50 gold pieces.
After that, the people of Qin were all talking about what Shang Yang did about the pole. They believed he was a man of his word. So when Shang Yang began carrying out his reforms, the people followed him.

The English have a difficult and, generally speaking, dysfunctional(不协调的) relationship with clothes. Their main problem is that they have a desperate need for rules, and are unable to get along without them. This helps to explain why they have an international reputation for dressing in general very badly, but with specific areas of excellence, such as high-class men’s suits, ceremonial costumes, and innovative(革新的) street fashion. In other words, we English dress is best when we are “in uniform”.
You may be surprised that I am including “innovative street fashion” in the category of the uniform. Surely the parrot-haired punks(朋克摇滚乐迷) or the Victorian vampire goths are being original, not following rules? It’s true that they all look different and eccentric(古怪的) but in fact they all look eccentric exactly in the same way. They are wearing a uniform. The only truly eccentric dresser in this country is the Queen, who pays no attention to fashion and continues to wear what she likes, a kind of 1950s fashion, with no regard for anyone else’s opinion. However, it is true that the styles invented by young English people are much more eccentric than any other nation’s street fashion. We may not be individually eccentric, apart from the Queen, but we have a sort of collective eccentricity, and we appreciate originality in dress even if we do not individually have it.
Another “rule” of behavior I had discovered is that it is very important for the English not to take themselves too seriously, to be able to laugh at themselves. However, it is well known that most teenagers tend to take themselves a bit too seriously.
The goths, in their scary black costumes, certainly look as if they are taking themselves seriously. But when I got into conversation with them, I discovered that they also had a sense of humour. I was once chatting to a goth in the full vampire costume—with a white face, deep purple lipstick, and black parrot-hair. I saw he was also wearing a T-shirt with “Goth”. “Why are you wearing that?” I asked. “In case you don’t realize I’m a goth,” he answered, pretending to be serious. We both burst out laughing.
28. What can we know about the English people?
A. They need rules to dress well.
B. They are in need of uniforms.
C. They are creative in general.
D. They lead the world trend.
解析:细节理解题。根据第一段第二句“Their main problem is that they have a desperate need for rules, and are unable to get along without them.”可知,英国人在穿着方面比较讲究,需要有规则束缚,故选A项。

B. A parrot-haired punk.

答案:C
30. Which of the following can best describe the goths?
A. They dress badly.
B. They dress in an amusing way.
C. They are unable to laugh at the way they dress.
D. They are less fashionable than the other English people.

A nickname is a shortened form of a person’s name. A nickname can also be a descriptive name for a person, place or thing. Many American cities have nicknames. These can help establish an identity, spread pride among citizens and build unity. Nicknames can also be funny.
Los Angeles, California is the second largest city in population, after New York City. Los Angeles has several nicknames. One is simply the city’s initials, L.A. It is also called the City of Angels because Los Angeles means “the angels” in Spanish.
Los Angeles often has warm, sunny weather. So another nickname is City of Flowers and Sunshine. New York is called the Big Apple. So Los Angeles is sometimes called the Big Orange because of the fruit that grows in that city’s warm climate.
The American motion picture and television industries are based in Los Angeles. So it is not surprising that it is called the Entertainment Capital of the World. Many films are made in the area of Los Angeles called Hollywood. Millions of people visit the area. No trip to Los Angeles is complete without seeing the word “Hollywood” spelled out in huge letters on a hillside.
Many movie stars live in Los Angeles. The city is sometimes called Tinseltown. This nickname comes from the shiny, bright and often unreal nature of Hollywood and the movie industry.
Another nickname for Los Angeles is La-La Land, using the first letters of Los and Angeles. This means a place that is fun and not serious, and maybe even out of touch with reality.
A good place for watching unusual-looking people is Venice, an area on the west side of Los Angeles. A system of waterways designed after the Italian city of Venice has been built there.
Many people love Los Angeles for its warm sunny weather, beautiful mountains and beaches, and movie stars.

A. Building up identity.
B. Entertainment.

第二节(满分25分)

“I’m going to miss you so much, Poppy,” said the tall, thin teenager. He bent down to hug his old friend goodbye. He stood up, hugged his parents, and smiled, trying not to let his emotions get the better of(难以克制) him.
His parents were not quite able to keep theirs under control. They had driven their son several hours out of town to the university where he would soon be living and studying. It was time to say goodbye for now at least. The family hugged and smiled through misty eyes and then laughed.
The boy lifted the last bag onto his shoulder, and flashed a bright smile. “I guess this is it,” he said. “I’ll see you back home in a month, okay?” His parents nodded, and they watched as he walked out of sight into the crowds of hundreds of students and parents. The boy’s mother turned to the dog. “Okay, Poppy, time to go back home.”
The house was very quiet without the boy living there. All that week, Poppy didn’t seem interested in her dinner, her favourite toy, or even in her daily walk. Her owners were sad too, but they knew their son would be back to visit. Poppy didn’t.
They offered the dog some of her favourite peanut butter treats. They even let her sit on the sofa, but the old girl just wasn’t her usual cheerful self. Her owners started to get worried. “What should we do to cheer Poppy up?” asked dad. “We’ve tried everything.”
“I have an idea, but it might be a little crazy,” smiled mum. “Without anybody left in the house but us, this place could use a bit of fun. Let’s get a little dog for Poppy.”
It didn’t take long before they walked through the front door carrying a big box. Poppy welcomed them home as usual, but when she saw the box, she stopped. She put her nose on it. Her tail began wagging (摆动) ever so slowly, then faster as she caught the smell.

(1)续写词数应为150左右;

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
答案:
Dad put the box on the ground and opened the top. A shiny little wet nose popped up. Then two soft paws. Next the box tipped over sideways, and out fell a mass of golden silliness. Poppy was amazed. She wagged furiously. She barked with joy. She smiled, her tongue relaxing out as she investigated the surprise. The little pup was not shy and immediately starting yipping and jumping around the older dog.“That didn’t take long,” remarked mum, as both dogs went roaring around the house in an unprepared game of chase.Dad laughed.
A few weeks later, the boy arrived home from university. He had been missing Poppy and was looking forward to seeing her. When he bent down to give her a big hug, he fell over in surprise as a small golden cloud came racing up to lick his face too. “Oh my gosh, who is this?”he exclaimed. His parents laughed at the look of shock on his face.“That’s Pee-wee,” said dad. “I can’t believe you got yourselves a puppy!”“We didn’t,”replied mum. “This puppy is for Poppy!”
