Do you often listen to music at loud volume? Over one billion young people are at risk of hearing loss because of listening to loud noise for long periods of time. Listening to music or watching a TV show at loud volume is harmful to your hearing.
The United Nations has standards for safe listening. It is not safe to listen to sounds that are louder than 85 dB(分贝) for eight hours or 100 dB for 15 minutes. The sound of a busy road is about 85 dB and the sound of a rock concert can be about 100 dB.
Loud noise is harmful to the inner ears. Most of us are born with about 16,000 hair cell(听毛细胞) in our inner ears. These cells notice sounds. However, listening to loud noise for a long time can make these cells work too hard and cause some of them to die. This is what causes hearing loss.
Some people might think that their music isn’t all that loud. But this can depend on where you are. For example, if you are in a noisy place like the subway, you might turn up your music too loud without realising it. Later, when you listen to it at the same volume in a quiet place, you might feel uncomfortable.
The “safe level” for most sound is below 80 dB for up to 40 hours a week. A level of 80 dB is roughly equal to the noise of a subway.
24. Why are many young people at risk of hearing loss?
A. They watch TV every day.
B. They listen to music every day.
C. They listen to loud noise in the subway.
D. They listen to loud noise for a long time.
根据第一段中的“Over one billion young people are at risk of hearing loss because of listening to loud noise for long periods of time.”
25. What is the sound level of a rock concert?
A. About 80 dB. B. About 85 dB.
C. About 100 dB. D. About 110 dB.
根据第二段最后一句“The sound of a busy road is about 85 dB and the sound of a rock concert can be about 100 dB.”
26. What can you learn from the text?
A. We feel comfortable when listening to loud music in a quiet place.
B. Most people are born with about 1,600 hair cells in the inner ears.
C. It is not safe to listen to sounds that are louder than 85 dB for 15 minutes.
D. Below 80 dB for up to 40 hours a week is the “safe level” for most sound.
根据最后一段第一句“The ‘safe level’ for most sound is below 80 dB for up to 40 hours a week.”
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. Keep the Loud Volumes
B. Loud Noise Is Harmful to Hearing
C. The Risk of Listening to Music
D. Loud Noise Stops Ears from Working

Now jazz music is an important part of Indianapolis’ art culture. Jazz clubs around the city still host concerts with local jazz musicians. One of these clubs, the Chatterbox Jazz Club, still has live jazz seven nights a week.
But the real history of jazz in Indy is much less simple. Along with the Avenue’s culture, jazz music was gone from the streets for many years.
Indiana Avenue was the heart of a neighbourhood along the White River. It was a centre for black music and live street music. The wealthy avoided this area. So it became a place that poorer families, including many African-American and immigrant(移民) families, moved to.
Jazz prospered in the mix of American cultures around the Avenue in the 1930s and 1940s. But in the 1950s, things changed. After the war, there were projects to make the city beautiful and build a university nearby. Both of these seemed like good changes. However, the new university and buildings caused poorer families to have to leave the area. This destroyed the Indiana Avenue community—and with it, its jazz culture.
After many years, Indianapolis remembered the value of its arts and music culture. It began to bring back lost cultures such as live music on the Avenue. To do so, it began to make new changes. The changes included repairing historic areas like the Avenue. Once again, the high living costs in these historic arts areas pushed low-income families out.
Today there are several old-style jazz clubs where friends can meet up to remember the past or just enjoy a summer evening. It might seem at first that jazz is alive again, but there is a sad reality behind these jazz clubs: Modern Indy jazz is only a shadow(影子) of the lively culture that was once on Indiana Avenue.
28. What does the author mainly want to say in paragraph 1?
A. Jazz clubs can make big money.
B. Jazz musicians often hold concerts.
C. Jazz music is popular in Indianapolis.
D. Jazz culture is just part of Indianapolis’ culture.
根据第一段中的“Now jazz music is an important part of Indianapolis’ art culture.”(现在爵士乐是印第安纳波利斯艺术文化的重要组成部分。)
29. What does the underlined word “prospered” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Disappeared quickly. B. Arrived soon.
C. Recovered soon. D. Developed well.
根据第四段中的“But in the 1950s, things changed ...However,the new university and buildings caused poorer families to have to leave the area. This destroyed the Indiana Avenue community—and with it, its jazz culture.”(但在20世纪50年代, 情况发生了变化。……

A. It rebuilt some old important areas.
B. It invited old jazz musicians to sing in the city.
C. It educated people about the value of music culture.

根据倒数第二段中的“It began to bring back lost cultures such as live music on the Avenue. To do so, it began to make new changes. The changes included repairing historic areas like the Avenue.”(它开始带回失落的文化,比如印第安纳大道上的现场音乐。 故选A项。
答案:A
31. According to the text, which of the following about modern Indy jazz is TRUE?
A. Its home culture is gone.
B. Its styles are too traditional.
C. It shows the sadness of the poor.
D. It is no longer a favourite of the young.
根据最后一段中的“It might seem at first that jazz is alive again, but there is a sad reality behind these jazz clubs:Modern Indy jazz is only a shadow of the lively culture that was once on Indiana Avenue.”(乍一看,爵士乐似乎又活跃了起来, 但在这些爵士乐俱乐部背后却有一个可悲的现实:现代印第安纳爵士乐只是曾经活跃在印第安纳大道上的文化的一个影子。) 故选A项。

You have probably heard of the Mozart effect. It’s the idea that if children or even babies listen to music composed by Mozart, they will become more intelligent. A quick Internet search reveals(显示) plenty of products to assist you in the task. Whatever your age is, there are CDs and books to help you taste the power of Mozart’s music. But when it comes to scientific evidence that it can make you more clever, the picture is more mixed.
The phrase “the Mozart effect” was made up in 1991, but it was a study described two years later in the journal Nature that sparked real media and public interest in the idea that listening to classical music somehow improves the brain. It is one of those ideas that sound reasonable. Mozart was undoubtedly a genius himself. His music is complex and there is a hope that if we listen to enough of it, we’ll become more intelligent.
The idea got across to the public, with thousands of parents playing Mozart to their children, and in 1998 Zell Miller, the Governor of the state of Georgia in the US, even asked for money to be set aside in the state budget so that every newborn baby could be sent a CD of classical music. It was not just babies and children who were exposed to Mozart’s music on purpose. Even an Italian farmer proudly explained that the cows were played Mozart to three times a day to help them to produce better milk.
I’ll leave the debate on the impact on milk yield to farmers, but what about the evidence that listening to Mozart’s music makes people more intelligent? More research was carried out but an analysis of sixteen different studies confirmed that listening to music does lead to a temporary improvement in the ability to handle shapes mentally, but the benefits are short-lived and it doesn’t make us more intelligent.
32. What can we learn from paragraph 1?
A. Mozart composed many musical pieces for children.
B. Children listening to Mozart will be more intelligent.
C. There are few products on the Internet about Mozart’s music.
D. There is little scientific evidence to support the Mozart effect.
33. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 3 suggest?
A. People were strongly against the idea.
B. The idea was accepted by many people.
C. The US government helped promote the idea.
D. Mozart played an important part in people’s life.
34. What is the author’s attitude towards the Mozart effect?
A. Favourable. B. Objective. C. Positive. D. Doubtful.
35. What would the best title be for the text?
A. Listening to Mozart, Necessary?
B. What Music Is Beneficial?
C. What Is the Mozart Effect?
D. To Accept Mozart or Not?

A friend of mine, whose name was John Smith, had a bad memory, which made him famous. He was so forgetful that he sometimes forgot what he was talking about in the middle of a sentence. His wife had to constantly remind him about his meetings, his classes or even his meals! Once he forgot he had eaten breakfast twice, at home and at school. His wife liked to remind her neighbours, “If John didn’t have his head tied on, he would forget that too.” Since John was a professor at a well-known university, his forgetfulness was often an embarrassment to him. It wasn’t that he was not clever, as some critical people tended to say, but just very, very absent-minded.
One hot summer day, Professor Smith decided to take his children to a seaside town about a three-hour train ride away. To make the trip more interesting for his young children, he kept the name of the town a secret. However, by the time they arrived at the station, John forgot the name of the town he was planning to visit. Luckily, a friend of his happened to be in the station. He offered to take care of the children while John hurried back home to find out where he was going.
The professor’s wife was surprised to see him again so soon.
“Oh, my dear, I forgot the name of the town.”
“What? You forgot the name? Maybe one day you will forget my name! Now I’ll write the name of that town on a piece of paper, and you put it in your pocket and please, please don’t forget where you put it.”
Satisfied that she had solved the problem, she sent her husband off again. Ten minutes later she was astonished to see him outside the house for the third time.

答案:
“What is the matter now?” asked his wife. “I just can’t remember why I come back and where I am supposed to be going on such a hot summer day,” replied the professor. However, the real reason was that he forgot where he had left his children. Sensing something wrong, Mrs Smith didn’t believe his words, because whenever he told a lie, he would blink his eyes more quickly. “Tell me the truth,” ordered his wife. “As you told me, I didn’t forget where I put the name of that town, but I forget the station where I left our children!” whispered the professor, his voice trembling. “What a bad memory!” shouted the wife.
Hearing the cry, out rushed their neighbours, trying to find out what had happened. All of them comforted Mrs Smith, “Take it easy, Mrs Smith. Everything will be OK soon.” It seemed that a fight between the couple was about to start. Just at that time, the professor’s cell phone began to ring. His friend, whose patience had worn thin, phoned to complain. The professor apologised, got into his car and drove away, leaving behind a bunch of people outside the house. Being afraid that he would make matters worse again, Mrs Smith decided to follow him, who then called a taxi. By the time she caught up with her husband, the children were already back home, safe and sound.
