象征意义 万里长城自构筑的那天起,就成为中华民族大一统的象征,2000多年来,任何人都没有能从认识上割裂万里长城,因而也就无法割裂中华民族。长城对中国人来说,是意志、勇气和力量的标志,象征着中华民族伟大意志和力量。 1933年的长城抗战震惊中外,揭开了抗日战争史上最初的壮烈一页,“誓与长城共存亡”成为抗日将士们的共同誓言。“起来,不愿做奴隶的人们,把我们的血肉筑成我们新的长城!”《义勇军进行曲》唱出了全体中国人民共同的心声。《义勇军进行曲》的长期传唱,使长城在人们心目中已升华为勤劳、智慧、百折不挠、众志成城、坚不可摧的民族精神和意志,增强了中华民族的自豪感、自信心和爱国热情。
军事意义 长城是世界古代史上最伟大的军事防御工程,它并非简单孤立的一线城墙,而是由点到线、由线到面,把长城沿线的隘口、军堡、关城和军事重镇连接成一张严密的网,形成一个完整的防御体系defensive system。军堡、关城和军事重镇这个体系具有战斗、指挥、观察、通讯、隐蔽等多种功能,并配置有长驻军队的点线结合防御工程整体。
文化意义 在长城出现的2000多年来,以长城为中心,南北文化的交流始终没有停止过。战国时期,赵武灵王修建赵长城,号召国人学习“胡服骑射”,进行南北文化交流。秦汉时期,长城南北文化进行了空前的对话与交流,在长城沿线发现的秦权、诏版,内蒙和林格尔汉墓壁画、单于和亲瓦当,还有闻名遐尔的昭君墓等,均是南北文化交流融合的见证。在长城地区的文化带里,遗留下来众多的名胜古迹,诸如敦煌、云冈石窟、麦积山、万佛堂石窟壁画、雕塑;元代居庸关云台、金代的卢沟桥以及金中都、元大都遗址与出土的文物等,都体现了文化交流的特点,同时也记载着中华民族历史上文化的辉煌。
