Last year, more than 500 students from different colleges took the test of “elephant driving license” at Yunnan College. Some of the students got an “elephant riding license” in Yunnan Province.
The license has the driver’s information on the left page and the elephant’s information on the right. Each elephant has its own name, such as “Shaobaogu” “Shaoerkuai” and “Xiaoyangyu”. Most of them are the names of popular food.
So, can the students really ride an elephant with the license? Of course not. In fact, the license is a gift from the college to its new students. The teachers of the college wanted to tell their students to protect wildlife by doing this. They said that wild Asian elephants are under first-class protection in our country. Only about 300 elephants remain. The students should never ride them. They should learn to protect them, because they’re in great danger. Some people think people in Yunnan go to school or work by riding an elephant. But actually, they don’t do that. The teachers of the college came up with this good idea. They hope to pass on the idea of protecting the Asian elephants to more people.
Volunteering with Asian elephants is the perfect way to discover the beauty of Asia. And we should protect one of the symbolic animals of the Asian culture at the same time.

A. How to get an “elephant riding license”.

Spacewalks can be dangerous. There is no air in space, of course. And it’s filled with a harmful radiation(辐射). But the spacesuits, although they are bulky, can protect astronauts.
A spacesuit is like a small space station. It has everything astronauts need when they carry out a spacewalk. For example, China’s Feitian spacesuits have six layers(层). The innermost layer collects astronauts’ urine(尿液). Then there are four layers that help control the temperature and air pressure inside the suit. Spacesuits are filled with air, so they look like they’re puffed up. The sixth layer is made of unusual fibers(纤维)that protect astronauts from radiation.
Astronauts are connected to the space station with safety ropes. The suit has headphones and speakers for astronauts to communicate. There is also a mirror on the wrist(手腕). Astronauts can check their suits by looking at it.
The first Feitian suit was made in 2008. Zhai Zhigang wore it to carry out China’s first spacewalk for about 19 minutes. The suits Chinese astronauts wear today are the second generation of Feitian. It can support walks as long as eight hours and can be used more often. Around the world, people get together to eat lunch or dinner. The certain rules at the table include how to use a knife, fork or spoon correctly, or when to ask to be served. All these rules are called table manners. These rules change from one culture to another, so what is considered to be polite in one culture can be seen as very rude in another. So it wouldn’t be a bad thing to learn about table manners.
In some countries in Europe and North America, for example, France, you might be advised to always rest your hands on the table while you are not using a knife or fork to eat. Keeping your hands under the table where nobody can see them is considered a bad dining manner. “ ▲ ” is one of the basic dining rules in these areas. Why is that? Some people guess this tradition started because people were afraid of what other people might be doing under the table, like holding a gun.
In some countries like Ethiopia(埃塞俄比亚), traditionally, the food is eaten with hands, usually from a large plate. Several delicious meals are put together on a plate and the guests sit around it. The proper way to eat them is to get a piece of the bread, and then some food that is close to you with it, and put it in your mouth. Because you are touching the food with your hands, make sure that you always wash them before and after the meal. The left hand is considered unclean, so it is polite to only use your right hand to eat.
36. What does the underlined word “rude” mean?
A. Funny. B. Impolite. C. Brave. D. Fantastic.
37.Which of the following can be put back into the “ ▲ ”?
A. Use a knife or fork to eat. B. Rest during table time.
C. Hands on the table. D. Keep hands clean.
38. Which of the following is proper when eating in Ethiopia?
A. Touch food with a fork. B. Put food on different plates.
C. Always get the farthest food. D. Wash hands before and after meals.
39. Why don’t people eat with their left hand in some countries?
A. Because ifs difficult to eat with the left hand.
B. Because eating with the left hand is not polite.
C. Because the left hand is thought to be not clean.
D. Because the left hand must be kept under the table.
