When my daughter was in primary school, she brought home four small twigs (嫩枝) one day. Her school gave these twigs to the students to plant. None of them looked very well, but with hope for the future, I planted them in our backyard. Over the years, because of an accident with the lawnmower and poor soil, three of them died. Only one survived.
It grew very slowly. It never got very tall. A few years ago, I noticed that it was starting to die. Only the top third of the tree was still green. Last summer I did my best to save it by feeding it a lot of fertilizer (肥料), but it didn’t work.
Later one morning, I went out and looked at it again. I was wondering whether it would be better to just cut it down. As I walked over to take a closer look at it, I noticed something moving in the leaves. It was a bird patiently building a nest (巢) in the top branches. I smiled when I looked at it. I thought maybe this old tree was still useful. It might not be healthy or pretty, but it was still giving a bird a home.
This tree reminded me that all of our lives have purpose. It doesn’t matter if we are young and strong or old and sick. Until our last breath, we have things to do, love to give, and joy to share. We can help to make this world a better and more beautiful place.
39.Why did the school give the students small twigs?
A.To plant. B.To study. C.To play with.
40.What does the underlined word “survived” mean?
A.became smaller B.was dead C.remained alive
41.What did the remaining tree look like a few years ago?
A.It was tall and green. B.It grew slowly but well. C.It didn’t have many leaves.
42.What might the writer do with the tree at last?
A.He might cut it down. B.He might leave it as it was. C.He might build more nests on it.
43.What does the writer mainly want to tell us?
A.We should plant more trees. B.Everyone has his own value. C.Trees are important for birds.

How important is music? Many people usually think that listening to music is nice, but not very important. It is often only thought to be entertainment, but not the necessary choice for education. This opinion is wrong. 44
Music tells us who we are. Music reflects the musicians’ thoughts and ideas, and the social environment they lived in. For example, Mozart’s music represents (代表) a lifestyle, and rock music also represents a lifestyle. 45 He introduced jazz into his music.
46 Science explains how the sun rises and sets. Music explores (探索) emotional (情绪的) meanings. People need to use every possible way to learn about our world.
Music shows people’s thoughts and feelings. 47 Through the language we express our feelings, discoveries, ideas and hopes. All of these can be shared with others. 48 When we forbid our children to receive a good music education, we take them away from the meanings that music expresses. So music education is much more necessary than people usually think.
A.Music plays a role in our study.
B.And music is a great way to express.
C.George Gershwin’s music is another example.
D.We can “talk” to each other in this amazing way.
E.In fact, music education is necessary for most students.

For a book lover, few things compare to the joy of a new book. Many people read paper books or e-books, but now there is a new trend — listening to audio books (有声读物). According to a report, more than 30 percent of Chinese people listen to audio books these days.
One of the reasons why audio books are becoming increasingly popular is that people want to make better use of their free time. Listening to e-books frees up time for them, whether they are at the gym, on a bus, or in bed. Faster Internet speeds mean that a book can be downloaded in seconds.
Several years ago, the hottest discussion among book lovers was whether reading e-books was as enjoyable as a paper book. Now, that discussion includes audio books. But here the conversation gets interesting: Both e-books and paper books need actual reading. Audio books only require us to lend our ears in order to enjoy them. And that’s not really the same as reading, right?
Andy
Listening to audio books helps with loneliness. When I feel bored or lonely, listening to audio books makes me feel that there is someone accompanying me.
He Yan
Audio books are less detailed (详细的) than paper books you read. People who want to read something serious, like science and history, should choose a paper book or e-book, but they can choose an audio book if the content is easy to understand.
Li Yong
Listening to audio books doesn’t make you think in the way you do when you’re reading a book. It’s also likely that you will miss information while you listen. It’s better to read a paper book when you read something serious.
Paper books, e-books and audio books have their own unique strengths and weaknesses. But instead of picking one over the other, we can make good use of them. Each of them can enrich your time spent reading and give you an enjoyable reading experience. In whatever ways you read, books have an important role in our lives. Someone famous once said, “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.”
54.Why do more people choose to listen to audio books?
55.What does the Chart I tell us?
56.According to the discussion, what do people think about audio books?
57.What common idea do He Yan and Li Yong have about audio books?
58.What does the writer mean by “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body”?
59.What kind of books do you usually read? How does reading help you?

Having the family reunion dinner on the Spring Festival’s eve is a traditional way of celebrating the festival. In my opinion, we are supposed to cook and have the reunion dinner at home. This way, family members can sit at the table, chatting and enjoying love and happiness.
My family always has the Spring Festival dinner at home. Last year, I offered to help cook in the kitchen, which made my parents really happy. Early that afternoon, each family member got together and prepared for the big dinner. Adults were talking about the happy moments of the year while making dishes and dumplings. Children were wearing their new clothes and playing happily around. The house was filled with joy and warmth.
From this experience, I have learned a lot. The Spring Festival is a special day for family members to reunion. The process of making dinner together at home is also a time to share love and happiness. More importantly, it teaches me to value my family.

My name is Cilia Li and I went to America to learn English last year. As an exchange student from China, I was excited at first. But I have to say that living in America for half a year was really a big culture shock for me.
I stayed with a host family in a small town. My host parents organized a lot of activities in my free time so that I wouldn’t miss home or feel lonely.
However, life was hard to get used to. My biggest problem was with the language. I failed to understand much in the first few weeks because everyone spoke English so fast and their pronunciation was completely different from my teachers’ in China. Though I managed to get used to it, I still had problems because they used a lot of expressions that I couldn’t understand.
Another difference was with the food. My host family always had bread, potatoes and salad for meals. But I like the dumplings, rice and delicious dishes from home. After all, home is the place where you can sense love, warmth and of course, the taste of mom’s cooking.
I have learned a lot from this experience. Most importantly, it taught me what homesickness really means. After coming back home, I started to value my family and enjoyed every time we stayed together.

It is necessary to learn how to communicate with people from other cultures to build good relationships with them. Here are some rules.
Learn about the culture first. A little knowledge can be helpful. Before meeting with someone from another culture, try to take time to learn the basic “dos and don’ts” of that culture.
Show respect for the culture. Each culture has its own values and beliefs. You shouldn’t judge people based on these differences. Instead, accept and respect them for what they are. You may even learn something new.
Speak clearly and slowly. Don’t shout at others. Raising your voice doesn’t make you easier to be understood. Do not treat other people as if they are silly. Communication difficulties lie in cultural differences.
Understand the rules about touching. Some cultures may expect more physical contact between people. For example, some cultures may shake or touch hands more readily than others. So don’t take it as impolite.
