一、阅读理解
Bridges are one of the best constructional inventions. You may be surprised to see that some old bridges are still standing and used by tourists. Some of the more modern bridges, on the other hand, reach breathtaking heights and are not for the faint of heart (胆小鬼).
The Bridge of Immortals (China)
The Bridge of Immortals connects the Huangshan mountain ranges in southern Anhui Province of eastern China. The bridge is terrifying to cross but the views are definitely rewarding and the photographs are pretty special too. The drop below is pretty dramatic and if you decide to cross, we only have a piece of advice to offer you crazy adventurers... Don’t look down!
Hussaini Hanging Bridge (Pakistan)
Hussaini Hanging Bridge is considered to be the most dangerous bridge in the world. This rope bridge is poorly maintained and shakes wildly when you walk across it. If you take a wrong step, you’ll end up flying into the Hunza River below.
Langkawi Sky Bridge (Malaysia)
This curious looking bridge in Malaysia is 400 feet above the ground and has been closed several times for maintenance purposes. Its reopening was delayed several times but it is now open for use, although not many people actually want to cross. There was a rumor (传闻) claiming that the bridge can potentially collapse.
Seven Mile Bridge (Florida)
The Seven Mile Bridge can be found in the Florida Keys and connects the Middle Keys to Little Duck Key in the Lower Keys. When it was constructed, it was one of the longest bridges in the world. It won 8 awards and one of these was the Exceptional Award for Cost Savings Innovation from the Federal Highway Administration.

Levon Biss was looking at insects from his garden through a microscope he bought for his son. For fun, they unintentionally placed an insect under the lens (镜片). “It is amazingly beautiful!” they both screamed.
The father had been making a career taking photographs for advertisements. But that experience gave him a new direction. Around the world, insect populations are in decline because of habitat loss and climate change. Biss thought that if people could see what he saw through his son’s microscope, they would care more about protecting insects.
So Biss turned to macrophotography: taking close-up pictures of small things, like flowers or bugs. His work has attracted attention not just for its unusual beauty. It also raises awareness about the need for conservation.
In 2016, Biss showed his first insect project, Microsculpture. The term refers to the features of an insect’s exoskeleton, or outer shell, which develops over time as the bug adapts to its environment.
Biss’s pictures capture the insects in all their microscopic details. Then he blows up the images until the insects become larger than life, some of them eight feet tall. But each image takes weeks to make. He uses a digital camera with a microscope lens. The camera is fixed on a computerized track, which allows Biss to take a shot, then move the camera by seven microns (微米) — a distance equals to about 1/10 the thickness of a human hair — for the next shot. In the end, Biss might take 10,000 shots of a bug. A computer combines these small pictures into a single image.
Biss’s latest exhibition is Extinct and Endangered at the American Museum of Natural History. He selected bugs that were extinct or endangered, hoping his photographs would serve as a better purpose. “I communicate visually,” he says, “The way I work is through pictures. But I think it’s my duty to shake things up and get people to pay attention.”
4.What made Levon Biss turn to macrophotography?
A.Beautiful insects. B.Attractive environment.
C.An expensive microscope. D.An accidental observation.
5.How does Levon Biss manage to capture insects’ microscopic details?
A.By taking a shot at them twice.
B.By adjusting the camera on a track.
C.By taking close-up pictures countless times.
D.By putting them in order on a computer.
6.What does the underlined phrase “shake things up” refer to in the last paragraph?
A.Get rid of the prejudice.
B.Take action to save wildlife.
C.Spare no efforts to face difficulties.
D.Make people think about nature differently.
7.Which of the following best describes Levon Biss?
A.Patient and responsible. B.Wealthy and ambitious.
C.Polite and strong-willed. D.Curious and easy-going.
A Norwegian company has created what it calls the world’s first zero-emission(排放), autonomous cargo ship(货船). Developed by chemical company Yara International, the ship was designed to reduce emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases, and move goods away from roads to the sea.
The shipping industry accounts for between 2.5% and 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to the International Maritime Organization. Nearly all of Norway’s electricity is generated by hydroelectric power, which is generally considered to have much lower carbon emissions than burning fossil fuels, despite the fact that it still produces greenhouse gases.
Capable of carrying 103 containers and with a top speed of 13 knots, it will use a 7 MWh battery, with about a thousand times the capacity of one electrical car. The ship will be charged near the port before sailing to container harbors along the coast and then back again, replacing 40,000 truck journeys a year.
As well as providing a greener option compared to conventional cargo ships, there is no crewman, which means it will be more cost-effective to operate. Initially, loading and unloading the ship will require humans, but gradually, all loading, discharging, and some other operations will also be eventually operated using autonomous technology. That will involve developing autonomous cranes(起重机) and carriers, which are the vehicles that place containers onto ships.
According to researchers, fully autonomous ships are the future. But there are many challenges to overcome before autonomous ships can be used for commercial long sea journeys. Navigating traffic in large ports could be a major barrier.
Without a crew aboard to carry out maintenance checks, autonomous ships would need built-in self-diagnosing systems with the ability to detect and fix problems, or call for human assistance.
Although Yara International has no plans to add more autonomous ships to its operations, we may see more elements of AI technology used on commercial ships in the future. Elements are already being used in shipping today when it comes to the voyage and we’ll see more partly autonomous elements added.
8.What’s the good news about the new ship?
A.It’s conventionally designed. B.It has been fully marketed.
C.It’s environmentally friendly. D.It is luxuriously equipped.
9.What plays a critical role in the ship’s successful operation?
A.The autonomous carriers. B.The latest navigating traffic.
C.The burning of fossil fuels. D.The massive battery capacity.
10.What can we learn from paragraphs 4-6?
A.Researchers are pessimistic about its future.
B.The new ship isn’t completely autonomous yet.
C.A lot more such ships will be in operation soon.
D.No human labor is needed to maintain the ship.
11.What is the author’s attitude to technology being applied to shipping?
A.Favorable. B.Reserved. C.Suspicious. D.Disapproving.
Today China is the world’s biggest consumer of wheat. But it wasn’t always that way.
Wheat only came to the area now known as northern China toward the end of the Neolithic (新石器) period, some 4,600 years ago. Initially, wheat didn’t seem to be so delicious and had been treated as a crop of desperation rather than a cooking delight. The first farmers of northern China primarily grew millet (粟), starting as early as 11,500 years ago. By the time of the Tang dynasty, wheat had replaced millet, becoming a major crop. But relatively little was known about exactly why this shift occurred.
In an attempt to track the answer, I accumulated (积累) a collection of nearly 1,200 data points covering more than 50 sites from the mid-Neolithic, about 9,000 years ago, to the collapse of the Eastern Han dynasty in 220 AD.The sites were across 8 modern provinces, ranging from Gansu province in the northwest to Shandong province in the east.
One possible explanation is a major climate shift, called the Holocene Event 3, which happened 4,000 to 4,500 years ago. At that time, the climate became colder and drier across continents, causing damage to crop production.
On top of this, the late Neolithic period was also a time of rapid population growth around the world. With an ever-increasing population and unsteady crop production, it is reasonable to assume that Neolithic farmers in northern China were struggling.
Wheat, it turns out, actually needs more water than millet, making it seem a poor choice for a dry period of history. But importantly, it can be sowed after millet has been harvested. That, we think, is the most likely reason why the people across northern China started to grow wheat.
From more extreme weather to changing coastlines, climate change has always brought unexpected and sometimes dramatic changes to societies. In this instance, the consequence of the Holocene Event 3 in northern China proved, eventually, delicious.
12.What can we learn about wheat from the second paragraph?
A.It replaced millet for its great taste. B.It was a poor choice at the beginning.
C.It outnumbered millet 4,600 years ago. D.It was the earliest crop grown in China.
13.What do the figures in paragraph 3 show?
A.The author found the exact answer. B.The author did the research cautiously.
C.The author did extensive research. D.The author was good at collecting data.
14.What was probably the main reason for northerners in China to grow wheat?
A.The water supply was enough then. B.The harvest of millet was not satisfying.
C.It adjusted to the weather conditions better. D.It had an alternative sowing season with millet.
15.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.How was millet introduced to China?
B.Why did Chinese farmers switch to wheat?
C.How did China become the biggest wheat consumer?
D.How was China’s wheat growth affected by climate change?
二、七选五
An important part of raising your children is teaching them good manners as it helps them be more successful in life. 16 Here are some “old-fashioned” but important manners for your modem kids.
Saying “thank you” to service workers
Saying “thank you” is the base of all good manners but these days many children overlook thanking the people that help them in many little ways each day, like wait staff, store clerks, and bus drivers. It’s not just about politeness but about teaching children to recognize and acknowledge others’ contributions as valuable. 17
Taking turns talking
Teach your children to touch your arm and then wait patiently for you to acknowledge(理会)them before speaking. If they do interrupt, calmly tell them it’s rude to interrupt and let them know you’ll acknowledge them shortly. 18 Offer your children the same politeness and don’t interrupt them when it’s their turn to talk.
Using their indoor voices
19 A parent should teach their children early on how to moderate(使适中)their volume and tone based on the situation. You can make it into a fun game for little ones, like seeing who can whisper the quietest at a cinema.
Covering a cough or sneeze
These days it’s more important than ever to teach children to cough or sneeze into a tissue or their elbow. It’s not just a matter of hygiene(卫生)——no one enjoys getting sprayed. 20 Don’t forget to teach them to say “excuse me” after.
A.Remember it goes both ways.
B.Therefore it makes others feel cared about.
C.Games are very important for children’s good manners.
D.Crying, laughing, or just talking, children can be very loud.
E.Lacking basic manners will affect kids in all areas of their lives.
F.It is also a way to help others feel safe and comfortable around you.
G.Eventually it’s about teaching them not to treat others as their servants.

六、读后续写
47.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Emily came from a musical family. Her father was a famous pianist in his early years and later was a music instructor. Her mother, however, was a performer and composer. Emily’s older brother was a Cello and part of the church’s choir. However, Emily wasn’t like her brother. She was unable to play any instrument.
“You have to be an instrument that you’re playing. Why aren’t you able to do it?” Emily’s father said to her, advising her to learn to play the piano. From time to time, her mother would show the wish that Emily could develop her ability to perform on the stage. It seemed that the whole family was pushing her to play music. Every time this happened, it was a massive pain for her. Emily felt that she wasn’t part of her family. It was her dream to become just like the rest of them. However, no matter how hard she tried, she was unable to.
“Being different doesn’t mean that you aren’t blessed with any potential or talent,” said Sarah, a teacher of Emily. “Maybe there is something interesting that I can do,” Emily thought. Every evening, Emily spent time sketching or drawing and painting in her bedroom. Her paintings showed her father on the piano and her brother on the Cello as well as her mother performing on the stage. Her paintings were vivid and the emotions were real. The paintings revealed how much her family was devoted to music. The paintings also revealed the things Emily was skilled at.
But her family did not even know. The only thing they knew was that Emily was unable to sing and play one musical instrument. And they weren’t happy with her at all. Emily was a lover of her loved ones, and she loved them dearly. She wanted to be the pride of the family someday. How could this happen when she wasn’t able to do what they asked her to accomplish?

The roads have been widened and new parks have been added too, all of which make the city a better place and help improve the life of those around them. These changes are mainly due to the government’s investment in the city’s development, as well as the efforts made by local businesses and residents in improving the city’s image and attractiveness.

One day, she went to Emily’s home to visit her family with Emily’s artwork, which vividly revealed how much her family was devoted to music.

They went to Emily and hugged her firmly, “My dear baby! Please forgive us. We just pushed you too hard to play one instrument despite the fact music was not what you were good at.” Emily couldn’t believe what she had heard.
