    LIVING LEGENDS

    Help us choose some “Living Legends of Sports” .They must be athletes who are masters in their sports and also set good examples for others.Here are our first two choices.

    Lang Ping

    As a player, Lang Ping brought honour  and glory to her country.As a coach, she led the China womens volleyball team to medals at world championships  and the Olympics.As a person, Lang Ping is loved by fans at home and abroad.When the Chinese team was preparing for the 2015 World  Cup, her determination  was tested.The team that Lang Ping had built was falling apart.One of the best players had been injured  and the team captain had to leave because of heart problems.Losing two important players1 was a big challengebut Lang Ping did not lose heart.She had faced difficulties beforeand she knew that her young players could win if they worked together as a team2】.Two weeks later, they were world champions! Then in 2016Lang Ping led her volleyball team to Olympic gold in Brazil.

    Michael Jordan

    When Michael Jordans feet left the ground, time seemed to stand still.The player who became known as “Air Jordan” changed basketball with his graceful moves and jumps.Jordans  skills  were impressive, but the mental strength that he showed made him unique.In the final seconds of a gameJordan always seemed to find a way to win3】.Jordan says that the secret to  his  success is learning from his failures 4】.“I can accept failure; everyone fails at something.But I can’t accept not trying.” Losing games taught him to practise harder and never give up.In lifeJordan has learnt to share his success with others.The Boys and Girls Club which he started in Chicago has been helping young people since 19965】.

    Tom Brady, a Californianwas an excellent quarterback (四分卫) at Junipero Serra High School.But when he arrived at the University of Michigan, he didnt see much playing time during his first three years on campus.He considered going back to a college in California, but he decided to stick it out.He didnt become a starter until the second half of his senior year.After becoming a National Football League (NFL) playerhe was not allowed to play as a starter.However, he kept improving his skills and preparing each week like he was the starter.

    In 2001, his second season, he only got in on the act because the starter was injured.Fans thought Tom would be just a fillin.But Tom led his team New England Patriots to a victory in his first start, then they won four of five, and then finished the year with six victories.Each week he seemed to get a little better, and people began to recognize him as a dark horse.New England Patriots got into the Super Bowl, fighting against the defending (卫冕的) champions St.Louis Rams.Tom led a finalminute gamewinning drive.He was no longer a nobody.

    Today, Brady is considered perhaps the greatest quarterback ever.He’d become a superstar.Yet he had never lost that fire, that drive, and that sense that the world didn’t believe in him.At 37, he said that he would play until fifty if his body allowed him to do so.And he even told his teammates that he wanted to play forever if possible.

    His teammates had dreamed of being him.Hogan was thirteen in February of 2002 when Brady and New England Patriots beat St.Louis Rams.Lengel was eleven at the time, watching with his grandfather in Kentucky.White was ten in Florida.Mitchell was nine in Georgia.These teammates were Tom’s big fans who since childhood had viewed from TV how he did the impossible.“He gave us the encouragementHogan said.

    He kept telling his teammates to keep going when the game wasnt over.He isnt the biggest, the fastest, and the strongest football player in the world.But he may be the most strongminded.

    Born on September 51961 in Canada, MarcAndr Hamelin is a great pianist and composer (作曲家)Besides performing (演奏) around the worldHamelin also composes music and judges competitions.So far, MarcAndr Hamelin has received 11 Grammy Award nominations (美奖提名), being one of the top pianists on the world stage today.
