阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
◆It's time to go back to high school.
Students are excited about the new beginning. But for many kids. the first day is more about friends than classes and maybe with good reason. On that day. the teacher takes attendance(考勤)hands out books. and describes the teaching plan. If a student hears the same things in seven classes. you can't blame them for thinking it's going to be another long year. When the high schoolers’ parents ask what they did in school. it's pretty likely that the answer
will be “nothing.”
◆It doesn't have to be this way.
Kids always want exciting changes, and you can give them a taste of how interesting your course will be. One English teacher asks students to write 77 words about what they want to get out of her class. Then she reads their responses out loud. She keeps the responses until the last day of the school year when she hands them back to students so they can see if they achieved what they wanted. After encouraging kids with a year-long game. she begins the English course.
◆On the first day of courses
On the first day of science. a teacher gives students 30 minutes to build something to improve people's lives. A history teacher organizes a debate on whether Swiss cheese is better than cheddar. In math class, another teacher puts students in groups of three. and gives them six minutes to come up with as many answers as possible to the question. “What is math good for?”
◆The new class activities
The new class activities are part of our school-wide movement to improve the first day of classes. Many teachers choose to use creative ways to encourage kids from day one. And all students seem to enjoy the changes. Quite a few parents told me that their kids said. “I think English(or math or biology or Spanish)is going to be great!”
21. What do most students expect to do on the first day of school?
A. Having classes. B. Doing homework.
C. Attending activities. D. Meeting old friends
22. The students will find out ________ in English class at the end of the school year.
A. if the teacher likes their responses. B. if their writing skills have improved.
C. if they can understand the 77 words. D. if their expectations have been realized.
23. What do the teachers in paragraph 3 have in common?
A. All try to improve students' creativity.
B. All hold discussions on teaching plans.
C. All try to create a student-centered learning atmosphere.
D. All ask students to work in groups and discuss any problems.
B
Now, I’ve talked much about education. I've talked about teacher's responsibility for inspiring students and pushing you to learn. I've talked about your parents’ responsibility for making sure you act correctly, and you get your homework done, and don't spend every waking hour in front of the TV. I've talked a lot about your government's responsibility for setting high standards.
But at the end of the day, we can have the most committed teachers, the most supportive parents, the best schools in the world and none of it will make a difference, none of it will matter unless all of you fulfill your responsibilities, unless you show up to those schools, unless you pay attention to those teachers, unless you listen to your parents and grandparents and other adults and put in(投入)the hard work that leads us to succeed. That's what I want to focus on today: the responsibility each of you has for your education.
I want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself. Every single one of you has something that you're good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That's the opportunity an education can provide.
And no matter what you want to do with your life. I guarantee that you'll need an education to do it. You want to be a doctor, or a teacher or a police officer? You want to be a nurse or an architect, a lawyer or a member of our military? You're going to need a good education for every single one of those careers. You cannot drop out of school and just drop into a good job. You've got to train for it and work for it and learn for it.
That's okay. Some of the most successful people in the world are the ones who've had the most failures. J. K. Rowling's who wrote Harry Potter- her first Harry Potter book was rejected 12 times before it was finally published. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team. He lost hundreds of games and missed thousands of shots during his career. But he once said, “I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that's why I succeed.”
And even when you're struggling, even when you're discouraged, and you feel like other people have given up on you, don't ever give up on yourself, because when you give up on yourself, you give up on your country.
24. The passage is probably a ________.

27. Which of the following statements about last two paragraphs is true?

Growing up, I always wanted to be an outgoing person because I thought that was the way I should be. I was always stuck on the idea that bigger personalities could achieve more. So I connected outgoingness with success.
However, I started letting go of the idea that outgoingness would help me achieve more when my skills as a leader were put to the test.
When I was 16, I volunteered at a summer camp for a week, where I led 12 fifth graders. Although I tried to solve problems as they came up, it seemed there was always another problem following.
Every night, I was supposed to read bedtime stories, but as my campers were getting ready for bed on Thursday, things reached a boiling point when one camper accused(指责)another of ruining camp for her. After I called in a teacher, our small wooden house was finally silent, but the hidden anger made me realize that my campers' experience would become less enjoyable if I left things unsolved.
Instead of reading stories that night, I decided to share a good memory I had of each of my campers. Afterwards. I invited my campers to describe their own memories, and watching the atmosphere(气氛)in our house changing as they described the good moments in the week gave me the feeling that finding my own ways to be a leader could be good enough.
The experience made me realize that I should grow in my own direction rather than forcing myself into a type that never really fit.
28. Which of the following can best describe the author?
A. Determined and critical(批判性的) B. Creative and attractive.
C. Careful and inconsiderate(考虑不周的) D. Confident and impatient.

C. It helped her understand many of the bedtime stories
D. It helped to shape her own values and beliefs in terms of growth.
31. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Growing in our own directions really fits better.
B. The author's camping experience was less enjoyable.
C. Students involved in camps can easily rise to challenges.
D. Students who are outgoing are more likely to make achievements.
D
Some students get so nervous before a test. They do poorly even if they know the material. Sian Beilock, a professor at the University of Chicago in Illinois, has studied these highly anxious test-takers. The students start worrying about the results. And when they worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources.
Professor Beilock and another researcher, Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution. Just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test.
The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students. They gave them two short maths tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test.
Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of 12% worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of 5%. Next. the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated to the test. Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B+. compared to a B- for those who did not.
“What we showed is that for students who are highly test-anxious. who'd done our writing intervention (干预), all of a sudden there was no relationship between test anxiety and performance. They were performing just as well as their classmates who don't normally get nervous in these tests.”
But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam? Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance
32. What does Professor Beilock think of those who thought about things unrelated to the test?
A. They did well in controlling their feelings.
B. They behaved better than most classmates.
C. They got a higher average grade than those who wrote about their feelings.
D. They got a lower average grade than those who wrote about their feelings.
33. Why do students feel anxious before an exam?
A. They don't want to take the examination.
B. They fail to focus on the upcoming examination.
C. They can't have a good command of what they have learned.
D. They are not sure whether they can succeed in passing the exam.
34. How can we solve the problem encountered in the test?
A. Encouraging students to concentrate on the test.
B. Encouraging students to study harder and harder.
C. Encouraging students to sit quietly for a moment before the test.
D. Encouraging students to write about their worries before the test.
35. What can we know from the last paragraph?
A. Writing about our worries before an exam can work a bit.
B. We can only write about our worries right before an exam
C. The best place to write about our worries is in the test room.
D. It doesn't matter where we write about our worries before an exam.
