I look forward to my half-hour train ride to work every morning. I can look out of the window as it turns itself through neighborhoods with the sun casting its strong light on the floor of the train car. The reason I love this ride is that it’s a reminder of how neighborhoods can change from block to block.
For a year, I have been riding this train to head into the office. I am one of 13 journalists who help report community news in areas that are often forgotten. And for me, that means covering areas like the one I grew up in.
Last week? As I was on the way to my office, I started wondering how neighborhoods have changed since the 2008. I searched addresses on the city’s southwest side, a neighborhood that has seen a significant number of homes pulled down. I scanned the street views recorded on my phone and saw how the neighborhood looked in 2007. Then I set out to visit the city block, and that’s when I met 3-year-old Harmony.
Harmony was collecting rocks as I walked down the street with her mother, Marquita. I already knew what the neighborhood looked like in the past, but Marquita shared more details of the people who once lived on her block, who were really friendly to each other. However, people today in the neighborhood are busy with life and seldom say hello to each other. Marquita has lived on this block her entire life, and Harmony has for most of her short life as well. But the neighborhood that Marquita grew up in will be one that is different from the one Harmony will grow in.
In the end, they smiled at my camera. And then I got back on the train and headed back to the office to tell their stories.

    24. What makes the author love his train ride to work?
    A. Being convenient. B. Admiring the outside views.
    C. Enjoying the warm sunshine. D. Knowing the change of blocks.
    25. How did the author find out what the city’s southwest side looked like in the past?
    A. By reading earlier reports. B. By interviewing local people.
    C. By watching past street views. D. By searching his memories.
    26. How might Marquita feel when she talked with the author?
    A. Nervous. B. Sad. C. Touched. D. Guilty.
    27. What is the main purpose of the text?
    A. To tell us the work of a news reporter. B. To share a pleasant train ride with us.
    C. To show us a crowded community. D. To introduce a new neighborhood.
    C
China is recognized as a world leader in the development of artificial intelligence and facial recognition systems. A Chinese company says it has created a new facial recognition system that can identify people even if they are wearing masks .
The company told a news agency that a team of 20 people built the system in about a month. The system is based on existing technologies developed over the past 10 years. The process involved adding a collection of about 6 million unmasked faces and a much smaller collection of masked faces, the company said.
The company is now selling two main kinds of products that use the new technology. One performs “single channel” recognition, which is designed to be used at the entrances to buildings. The other product is a “multi-channel” recognition system that uses groups of monitor (监视) cameras. It can identify individuals in a crowd of up to 30 people within a second.
“When people are wearing a mask that covers the mouth and the nose, the recognition rate can reach about 95%, which can ensure that most people can be identified,” said Huang, vice president of the company. He added that the system’s success rate for people not wearing a mask is about 99.5%.
However, the new system struggles to identify people wearing both a mask and sunglasses. “In this situation, all of the key facial information is lost. In such cases recognition is graunchy,” Huang said.
People respond (响应) differently to the new technology. While some citizens have been against using such tools, the majority have accepted the technology as an effective way to reduce crime and catch criminals.

    28. What did the company do to build the system?
    A. It used the latest technology. B. It gathered many face images.
    C. It employed hundreds of people. D. It added a collection of masks.
    29. What can we know about the new system?
    A. Its success rate is affected by cameras.
    B. Its performance varies with the location.
    C. It does better in identifying unmasked faces.
    D. It can recognize groups of people in seconds.
    30. What does the underlined word “graunchy” mean?
    A. Difficult. B. Specific. C. Normal. D. Different.
    31. What is most people’s attitude towards the new system?
    A. Supportive. B. Objective. C. Uncaring. D. Doubtful.
    D
The endangered pandas in Qinling Mountains might face a new threat: the loss of their food—bamboo, which makes up 99% of their meals.
Adult pandas spend most part of the day eating bamboo and have to take in at least 40 pounds a day to stay healthy. However, a new study published in Nature and Climate Change warned that they may soon find their food gone because most of the bamboo in Qinling Mountains might disappear by the end of the century as a result of rising temperature worldwide.
A team made up of researchers from Michigan State University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences has studied the effects of climate change on the bamboo in Qinling Mountains. They have found that bamboo is very sensitive to climate changes. “80% to 100% of the bamboo would be gone if the average temperature increases 3.5 degrees worldwide by the end of the century.” said Liu Jianguo, one of the reports’ authors. He added, “This is how much the temperature would rise by 2100 even if all countries will keep their promises in the Paris Agreement. But you know what is happening around the world.”
In recent years, China has been trying its best to protect the endangered pandas by setting up more and bigger natural reserves. “But it is far from being enough and the endangered pandas need cooperation from the rest of the world, because their future is not just in the hands of the Chinese,” said Shirley Martin from World Wildlife Fund.
The Qinling Mountains are home to about 360 pandas. That is about a quarter of the China’s wild panda population. In addition, about 435 are living in research centers and zoos in China.

    32. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
    A. Pandas have already eaten 99% of the bamboo in Qinling Mountains.
    B. Pandas in Qinling Mountains are just threatened by the loss of food.
    C. Lots of the bamboo in Qinling Mountains will possibly disappear.
    D. Qinling Mountains cannot provide enough bamboo for the pandas.
    33. What does Liu Jianguo mean in third paragraph?
    A. The changes of temperature is sensitive to bamboo.
    B. China needs more help from World wildlife Fund.
    C. China is making great efforts to protect the pandas.
    D. It is difficult to control the temperature rise within 3.5 degrees.
    34. How many wild pandas are there in China?
    A. About 1,500. B. About 720. C. About 360. D. About 1,900.
    35. Which can be the best title for the text?
    A. Necessity to Change Pandas' Food B. A New Threat Faced by the Pandas
    C. The Disappearance of Bamboo D. Efforts Made to Save Pandas
    第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填人空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Studies have shown that walking among trees makes us relaxed.          (36)   There’s plenty of research showing the link between being in nature and being happy, but most of the research has focused on adults.
             (37)   Explaining the motivation behind the study, researchers note that with environmental issues such as global warming, more studies are focusing on the relationships between humans and nature to find solutions to these problems, and the future of the planet lies in the hands of children and their actions. However, few studies focus on this aspect.
For the study, researchers worked with 296 children between the ages of 9 and 12. To measure how connected they were to nature, the kids were asked how much they enjoy activities like seeing wildflowers and wild animals, hearing sounds of nature and touching animals and plants.          (38)   They also found that the more concerned children were about the environment and nature, the more likely they were to be happy.
So exposure(暴露) to nature is related to active behaviors and happiness of children. What does that mean to adults? As we all know, children usually tend to follow adults’, especially their parents’ behaviors. That’s to say, when adults are outside and appreciate nature, kids learn by example.          (39)
Researchers say that children need role models who can gently guide them to nature with excitement and an attitude of a lifelong learner.          (40)   What’s more important is that they spend time together with children by exploring a fun and safe environment.

    A. It’s so good going for a walk around trees.
    B. Even just smelling the trees helps reduce anxiety.
    C. And if parents enjoy being close to nature, so will their children.
    D. Parents don’t have to be experts in environmental science or nature studies.
    E. They found that the kids connected to nature were more likely to behave actively.
    F. In a new study researchers wanted to see if kids get the same benefits from being outdoors.
    G. Researchers will study more about the connection between children’s happiness and nature.

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When Thanksgiving Day was approaching, my primary school decided to celebrate by presenting shows with dancing and singing that all students could join in. Parents would also be invited to watch.
One afternoon, my teacher called me into his office. He said with a smile, “Nancy, could you write a poem and read it during the coming event?” “Of course,” I answered excitedly. I had loved poetry since fifth grade. When my first poem was published, my friends and teachers started to describe me as the class poet.
I left the my teacher’s office that afternoon feeling quite happy. Then, for weeks, I practiced reciting (朗诵) it aloud every day.
When the evening for the event finally came, I was ready. Well, I was ready until I looked around and realized how many people there were in the school hall. How could I present my poem in front of more than 400 people? I was just a seventh-grader. No one would take my work seriously. What’s worse, I had never spoken in front of any huge crowd before. I sat in my chair, wanting to bury myself. Maybe they would forget I was supposed to read.
“Hey, Nancie, I saw your name in the program. Good luck,” my little brother shouted. I nodded, struggling to keep calm. I knew my parents were somewhere in the hall. Before long, the lights faded, the crowd went quiet, and the schoolmaster got on stage to introduce the list of performers. My name was at the end of the list, so I had to sit through an hour of absolute anxiety.
It wasn’t until the students from the fourth grade were singing that my teacher led me downstairs to the area next to the stage. My mind was blank. Then suddenly, I was on stage with the bright white lights blinding my view of the audience. When I walked to the microphone in the center of the stage, I somehow tripped (绊倒) over something and stupidly fell down. All of the kids burst into laughter.

    注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式作答。
I was about to run away when my teacher came up to me.
    ____________________________________________________________________________________
When I had finished my reading, the hall was silent at first.

    第一节 话题作文
    Dear teachers and fellow schoolmates,
Because of water pollution and ever-lasting population, human beings face serious water crisis. Aimed at saving water, the water-saving program has been held recently in our school. As for us students, it’s essential and vital to take part in it.
Actually, there are many phenomena of water wasting in our daily life, For example, many students spend too much time having a shower and don’t turn off the tap immediately after washing hands, both of which lead to water wasting. Therefore, effective measures should be taken to raise everyone’s awareness of saving water. At first, we can take a bath instead of taking a shower, and turn off the tap immediately after washing hands. Besides, reusing water is also a good way to save water.
My dear friends, Let’s work hand in hand to challenge the difficulties and start with ourselves.

    第二节 续写作文
    参考答案
I was about to run away when my teacher came up to me. He joked that I had fallen because I was eager to bow to the audience. His humor helped me deal with my embarrassment. Then he invited the audience to clap. Feeling less nervous, I took the microphone and cleared my throat before reading the title. Surprisingly, my voice sounded clear and loud. The hall was silent. I continued reading, with words coming out in the right order and lines flowing together appropriately.
When I had finished my reading, the hall was silent at first. With sweat running down my forehead, I chewed my lip nervously. Maybe no one liked my poem. Then, out of the silence, there was clapping and cheering. I looked for my parents in the sea of faces, and saw my mother wiping away tears and my father smiling. With a light-headed feeling and a happy smile, I bowed slightly and walked off the stage. I greeted each person I met when going back to my seat, with relief and gratitude spreading warmly through my body.
