My master decided one day to visit some friends. James Howard, a stable (马厩) boy, was to drive them. The first day we traveled thirty-two miles, but James drove so carefully that Ginger and I were not at all tired.
Just as the sun was going down, we reached the town where we would spend the night. We stopped at a big hotel in the Market Place. We were taken to a long stable.
In the evening, a young man with a pipe (烟斗) in his mouth came into the stable for a gossip (闲谈).
“Towler,” said an ostler (马夫), “put some hay (干草) down into this horse’s rack, will you? Only put your pipe down first!”
“All right,” said Dick Towler, the young man. Later I heard him step across the floor overhead and put down the hay. Then James came in for a last look at us before he went to bed.
At night I woke up feeling very uncomfortable. The stable seemed full of smoke and I couldn’t breathe.
Just then Dick Towler came in with a lantern and began to untie the horses. He seemed so frightened that he frightened us, too, and none of us would go with him
Next I heard James’s voice, “Come on. Beauty, we’ll soon be out of here.” He tied his scarf lightly over my eyes, and he led me out of the stable to a safe place, then he went back for another.
I was joyful when James was coming through the smoke, leading Ginger out. Soon firemen arrived with a heavy fire engine and quickly put out the fire.
Next day, everyone was wondering how the fire had started. At last someone remembered that Dick Towler had been smoking a pipe when he came into the stable. Dick said that he had put his pipe down, but no one believed him. Pipes were never allowed in the stable at Birtwick Park.

Have you ever eaten at a restaurant that serves Western food? If so, do you remember what the menu looked like? Western restaurant menus are quite different from Chinese restaurant menus. But how are they different?
Most Western restaurant menus do not have as many pictures as Chinese ones do—with a picture, you can tell what is in a dish. In some fancy (昂贵的) Western restaurants, a menu may not have any pictures at all.
But most Western menus show a list of ingredients (原料) for each dish. If you order a burger, the menu might tell you that the burger has cheese, ketchup and mustard (芥末). The menu can also tell you how the food is cooked--for example, whether it is fried or steamed (蒸).
Western restaurants use many different methods to design their menus and make them more attractive. In fact, there is a whole industry called “menu engineering”, according to the BBC.
Menu engineers are experts at designing menus. Their menus can increase sales and influence customers’ thoughts.
A well-designed menu can encourage customers to eat certain dishes. It can even make them believe that your restaurant’s food is of higher quality, even if they haven’t eaten the food yet.
For example, using descriptive (描述性的) words like “juicy” or “cheesy” can help dishes sell better. Instead of just writing “steak (牛排)” in their menu, a restaurant might write “sizzling steak”. This makes the steak sound more delicious.
Also, it is known that people pay the most attention to items at the top of a page. This is the best place for dishes that you want to promote.
As you can see, menus are not just simple lists of food!
    11. What does the passage mainly compares between China and western countries about the restaurant?
    A. Food. B. Menu. C. Price. D. Service.
    12. Which one can’t you know from a Western menu?
    A. What is in the dishes. B. How the dishes are cooked.
    C. When your dishes will be ready. D. Whether a burger has ketchup.
    13. The writer thinks that the pictures in Chinese menus are ______.
    A. useful B. useless C. beautiful D. real
    14. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
    A. How Western people make their menus.
    B. Why Western menus have no pictures.
    C. Why Western menus list ingredients for each dish.
    D. What Western menus are like.
    15. What can we infer from the passage?
    A. It is easy to design a successful Western menu.
    B. A well-designed menu can attract more customers.
    C. Good menus depend on how well each dish is described.
    D. Dishes at the top of a menu page are the most delicious ones.
    D
Oxygen extracted from Mars air (从火星空气中提取氧气)
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) achieved another first during its latest mission on Mars. It successfully turned carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) from the air of Mars into fresh, breathable oxygen.
The extraction of oxygen out of thin air on Mars was done by a device called MOXIE. The device on Perseverance (毅力号) is about the size of a toaster (烤面包机). “In its first run, it created about five grams of oxygen. That is what an astronaut would need in order to be able to breathe for about 10 minutes,” NASA said. The achievement marked the first experimental extraction of a natural resource from another planet for direct use by humans.
MOXIE isn’t just the first device to produce oxygen on another planet. It is the first technology of its kind that can help future missions to “live off the land” of another planet. Oxygen is not only a source of breathable air for astronauts, but also an important element for the production of the rocket fuel (燃料) that will be needed to fly them back home.
According to a researcher at NASA, taking a one-ton machine to Mars was much easier than trying to carry 25 tons of oxygen from the earth. Astronauts living and working on Mars would need about one ton of oxygen to last the whole year.
MOXIE is designed to create up to 10 grams of oxygen an hour. During the first two years of Perseverance’s journey, NASA plans to run it at least another nine times.
When astronauts finally take their first breaths of locally made oxygen on Mars, they may have this toaster-size device to thank.

    17. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

    C. MOXIE did the experimental extraction of a natural resource from another planet.

    18. What do we know about MOXIE?
    A. It is as heavy as a toaster.
