The older I get, the more I understand how my teachers have transformed my life.
On a recent Sunday afternoon, I went to see Mr. C at Roxbury Park in Beverly Hills. His love of life has not dimmed despite the fact that his legs no longer work like they used to. He visited some of his former students while he was in town. At Beverly Hills High School, Mr. C taught ancient history, coached football and golf, and risked his life teaching driver’s training on Saturday mornings from 1964 to 1988. The gray and hobbled students lined up one after another to thank their favorite teacher. One called him a rock star. Another was grateful for helping him when he couldn’t say so. It was a beautiful tribute, especially in these times of catastrophic teacher shortages.
Spending that Sunday in the park with Mr. C was nothing short of magic. It was a reminder of all that is promising and possible in public education, including a teacher whose rare emotional honesty could be appreciated and honored decades later. It also brought to mind Maya Angelou’s saying “People will forget what you said and did, but never forget how you make them feel.” He made me and others in the park feel heard and seen.
Mr. C changed my perception of myself. Rather than seeing myself as a loser cheerleader who couldn’t compete with the smart kids, I realized how much I loved learning. His history class was so interesting. In his classes about the Persians, Greeks, and Romans, extra credits can be earned for creativity. During earthquake drills, we counted on Mr. C to scream his head off in mock terror.
It should come as little surprise that I’d value the role of teachers in my life. Both of my parents taught; so did my siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins. I, too, have become a teacher and I try to follow in Mr. C’s footsteps. Some days, I fantasize what it would be like to go on a teacher tour, reaching out to my mentors to express my deep gratitude for all they’ve given me. Seeing Mr. C sparked that fantasy again. When I finally worked up my courage to thank him, knowing a floodgate of tears would open, he said to me with his typical modesty: “You were doing me more good than I was doing you.”
    24. What does the underlined word “tribute” mean in Paragraph 2?
    A. enthusiasm B. admiration C. devotion D. commitment
    25. Why does the author mention Maya Angelou’s saying?
    A. To make a suggestion.
    B. To introduce a celebrity.
    C. To show respect to an educator.
    D. To interpret the influence of education.
    26. What does the author think of her job as a teacher?
    A. Enjoyable. B. Intolerant. C. Incompetent. D. Patient.
    27. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
    A. A reunion. B. A rock star. C. A surprise. D. A great teacher.
    C
New research has found a direct correlation between how a child visually tracks his mother’s eyes and the condition. How a toddler responds to baby talk could help diagnose autism (自闭症) years before symptoms begin, according to the new research.
A study examined responses to parents’ use of playful, emotional, exaggerated tones, known as “motherese” (mother’s ‘baby talk’), to capture a child’s attention. Eye-tracking tests showed that children who did not respond had weaker social and language abilities. Professor Karen Pierce, of California University in San Diego, co-author of the research, said, “We know the earlier we can introduce treatment, the more effective it is likely to be. But most children don’t get a formal diagnosis until around the age of three or four. There is a real need for easy and effective tools that can be used on young children. Eye-tacking is a great place to start.”
In experiments, 653 toddlers aged one to two years old were exposed to two one-minute videos featuring a woman speaking motherese or abstract scenes. Their eyes controlled which one played. Participants without ASD (autism spectrum disorder) showed consistently high interest in the woman speaking motherese, spending an average 80 percent of the time watching it. They largely ignored the second video which showed a busy highway, abstract shapes and numbers and had accompanying electronic music.
However, attention levels of peers diagnosed with ASD spanned the full range of concentration levels, with some focusing 100 per cent on the random images. A group who fixed on motherese less than 30 per cent of the time could be accurately identified as having ASD through this measurement alone. These children also showed lower scores on subsequent tests of language and social skills.
Whether less attention to motherese is the cause of reduced sociability or merely a symptom has yet to be determined. However, researchers found it appears to be a highly accurate biomarker for the condition. Prof Pierce said, “The fact we can reliably identify children with autism using such a simple and rapid eye-tracking test is really remarkable. In future, we hope to use a child’s attention to motherese as a clue for which treatments they may most benefit from and as a tool for measuring how well those treatments work.”
    28. What is the purpose of the study?
    A. To diagnose autism early. B. To check a child’s eyesight.
    C. To test a child’s reaction to motherese. D. To catch a child’s attention.
    29. What can we know according to Pierce?
    A. Eye-tracking test is a good way to cure autism.
    B. It is essential to bring in ASD treatment in early time.
    C. There is an urgent need for complex tool applied to young children.
    D. Most children don’t get an informal diagnosis before the age of three or four.
    30. How did participants without ASD responded to the videos in experiments?
    A. They mainly overlooked the second one.
    B. They fixed 80 percent on the random images.
    C. They focused on motherese more than 30% percent of time.
    D. They showed occasionally high interest in the woman speaking motherese.
    31. What’s the main idea of the passage?
    A. How to heal autism.
    B. The process of eye-tracking test.
    C. How to improve toddlers’ language and social skills.
    D. The connection between a child’s reaction to motherese and autism.
    D
The next morning Alex was waiting in the FMA president’s suite when Jerome Patterton arrived. Alex filled him in quickly on the Jax report. Then he said, “I want you to give an order to the trust department to sell every share of Supranational we’re holding.”
“I won’t!” Patterton’s voice rose. “Who do you think you are, giving orders---“ “I’ll tell you who I am, Jerome. I’m the guy who warned the board against in-depth involvement with SuNatCo. I fought against heavy trust department buying of the stock, but no one---including you ---would listen. Now Supranational is caving in.” Alex leaned across the desk and slammed a fist down hard. “Don’t you understand? Supranational can bring this bank down with it.”
Patterton was shaken. “But is SuNatCo in real trouble? Are you sure?”
“If I weren’t, do you think I’d be here? I’m giving you a chance to salvage something at least.” He pointed to his wristwatch. “It’s an hour since the New York stock market opened. Jerome, get on the phone and give that order!”
Muscles around the bank president’s mouth twitched nervously. Never decisive, strong influence often swayed him. He hesitated, then picked up the telephone.
“Get me Mitchell in the trust department… Mitch? This is Jerome. Listen carefully. I want you to give a sell order immediately on all the Supranational stock we hold… Yes, sell every share.” Patterton listened, then said impatiently, “Yes, I know what it’ll do to the market. And I know it’s irregular.” His eyes sought Alex’s for reassurance. The hand holding the telephone trembled as he said, “There’s no time to hold meetings. So do it! Yes, I accept responsibility.”
He hung up and reached for a glass of water. “The stock is already down. Our selling will depress it more. We’ll be taking a big beating.”
“It’s our clients---people who trusted us---who will take the beating. And they’d have taken a bigger one still, if we’d waited. Even now we’re not out of the woods. A week from now the SEC may disallow those sales. They may rule we had inside knowledge that Supranational was about to be bankrupt, which we should have reported and which would have halted trading in the stock.
    32. Alex filled him in quickly on the Jax report. The sentence means____.
    A. He filled his name on the Jax report quickly.
    B. Alex signed his name to the Jax report quickly.
    C. He offered the FMA president the Jax report smartly.
    D. He prepared the Jax report for Patterton to sign smartly.
    33. From the context we can infer that ________.
    A. SuNatCo would bring the stock market down if it sold all the Supranational stock they held.
    B. The president was stubborn and would never listen to others.
    C. Alex will take the place of Patterton in the future.
    D. the clients would take a bigger beating than the bank
    34. The New York stock market is the place where_____.
    A. the old stock can be bought and sold
    B. shares can be bought and sold
    C. paper stock can be bought and sold
    D. some of the stock can be taken without being paid for
    35. In the sentence “Even now we’re not out the woods.” The phrase “out of the woods” means _____.

After a hard day’s work, I usually go shopping in the nearby commercial center to relieve my tiredness.
Last Monday, I was in the commercial center as usual and I decided to go and get a cup of coffee. As I was making my way to the coffee shop. I noticed an old gentleman rather poorly dressed sitting on a bench nearby. I knew from first sight that he was in need of some kind of help. He had a little lunch laid out in front of him and was wholeheartedly enjoying it. It was also rather obvious that he had a problem with his right eye and probably couldn’t see out of it. I then joined the line and waited to be served.
Then one thing that made me unforgettable happened. There was a young man in front of me in the line who was also waiting to be served. The next thing I knew was that the young man handed the server a twenty-dollar bill and requested an orange juice, as well as a favour. The server looked at the young man, a little confused, not fully understanding the request.
“Please help me give the juice to the old gentleman eating his lunch outside on the bench, as well as the change from the 20 dollars,” the young man said to the server.
At that time, the server hesitated for a moment and said, “I am a little scared for his behavior and appearance.”
“Don’t worry. I have the confidence that he is a kind and warm-heated gentleman. He is just in need of some kind of help and has a problem with his right eye and probably couldn’t see out of it. I will be watching every second so that you will be completely safe at all times,” the young man added.

    应用文写作:
    Dear Olivia,
Thanks for your last letter. I’m writing to tell you something about labor practice activities in our school.
Varieties of labor practice activities are organized in all grades of the school. In addition to spring-cleaning in the school, students are frequently given chances to do some housework including cooking meals, sweeping floors as well as washing dishes at home. Besides, each class usually works as a group and undertakes different kinds of volunteering work in the community, ranging from sweeping trashes, watering flowers and trees to assisting elderly people. By participating in these activities, both in and out of school, not only have we experienced the importance of teamwork, but also developed a sense of responsibility.
I hope the information will be of great help to you. Looking forward to your early reply.
    Yours sincerely,
    Li Hua
    读后续写:
Then the server approached the old gentleman slowly. “Hello, the orange juice and the money for you,” the server said with a little cautiousness. Hearing that, the old gentleman was very surprised at the unexpected event. Knowing what had happened, he took them with a big smile, stood up and bowed to the server and the young man. The server felt relaxed immediately and talked happily with the old gentleman. The young man smiled happily. The old gentleman showed great gratitude to them again after drinking the juice.
I wondered why the young man didn’t perform this act of kindness himself. While I was wondering, the young man left and the server continued doing his job. From the young man’s behavior, I suspected that deep down in his heart he was hoping that this act of kindness might inspire others to do something for the old gentleman as well and inspire others to do something when the same things happen around us. Absolutely beautiful! From then on, I made up my mind to help someone who needs help. Only in this way could more and more people help each other in the future.

M: Hello. International Friends Club. Can I help you?
W: Oh, hello. I read about your club in the paper today and I thought I'd phone to find out a bit more.
M: Yes, certainly. Well, we are a sort of social club for people from different countries. It's quite a new club-we have about 50 members at the moment, but we are growing all the time.
W: That sounds interesting. I'm British actually, and I came to Washington about three months ago. I'm looking for ways to meet people. Er, what kinds of events do you organize?
M: Well, we have social get-togethers, and sports events, and we also have language evenings.
W: Could you tell me something about the language evenings?
M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their languages--you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. Monday--Spanish; Tuesday--Italian; Wednesday--German; and Friday--French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come.
W: Well, that sounds great. I really need to practice my French.
M: OK. Well, if you can just give me your name and address, I'll send you the form and some more information. If you join now you can have the first month free.
